Great video Gerald, I still think it's silly that Canon added 8K video on the R5 without any active cooling but limited the C70 to 4K. Honestly, the C70 should have been able to record minimum in 6K and also in RAW to compete with cameras like the RED Komodo. This is a great camera but also a strange one in the Canon Eco system because we know it's capable of doing more.

Great review as usual. The Canon manual focus guide is second to none in my opinion. I'm glad they are incorporating it in their newer cameras. I love that you mentioned that the C70 could be what Canon owners have been looking for that is equivalent to what Sony is offering. It doesn't have to have all of the exact same features, but just enough to make it compatible so that Canon owners don't have to completely change systems if they are already heavily invested in the system. Thanks again.

Hi Gerald, Your reviews are always fantastic and I thank you a lot for making them (from France). There is only one thing that you never talk about, is the ergnomics for TV work like with the camera on the shoulder for an entire day. With all the ports on the side of the operator (like in all DSLR) and the screen on the back of the camera, you have to add an extra EVF + rigging and powering solutions which kill the "run and gun" ergonomics... Of course you can't talk about all ways of using a camera but the "cat over the shoulder" (we french like a lot) seems very important to me when you think about buying a buying a camera. We are not all youtubers. But still, thanks a lot for your contents.

@@bradleyc6564 the RF mount supposedly has the same flexibility as it has a smaller flange distance then the EF mount. At least that is my understanding.There may be 3rd party companies working on a adapter for the RF mount. It just seems the fx6 gives a bit more for the price with low light, raw capability, and full frame. Its a hard one for me. I will decide by end of this year.
@fergus.hammond
@fergus.hammond 4 жыл бұрын
@@bradleyc6564 I think the point is that both Sony and Canon cameras are so good, that most people will choose the one they’ve already got lenses for. While you can put a Canon EF lens on a Sony camera, the autofocus performance is going to be worse than using a native E mount lens. (Which doesn’t mean you have to use a Sony lens: Sigma makes E mount lenses that have great autofocus.) I also don’t think it’s possible to put a Canon RF lens on a Sony E mount camera or vice versa.

@@d.edwardsfreelanceeditorvi4212 One other thing you might want to consider is where and how you’ll be using the camera. I think the FX6 has an edge of the C70 for outdoor shoots where you’re frequently moving - documentation, wildlife, etc. In those situations, being able to use an EVF (by adding a loupe to the LCD) on the FX6 will be very appealing. I’ve got an a7S and an FX9 and even though the a7S has a wonderful, big touch screen, I almost never use it outdoors; the EVF is better because it’s easier to see in the sunlight and having my eye up against it helps to stabilize the camera.

How is the Red better in quality? I’m confident you’ll learn the Red has less Dynamic Range than the Canon and Sony. Don’t buy the marketing hyped “16+“ stops. Also the Redcode on the Komodo is inferior to the Redcode on other Reds... so no codec advantage. Native RF glass is unsupported. The touch interface is a laggy hit mess. It has but a single card slot. Battery life is abysmal. No stabilization... at all. No NDs... you get the point. On so many levels Komodo is years behind the cameras you mentioned.

Hey Gerald... Since the camera has been in the hands among actual users a few issues have come up. 1) Despite Canon marketing about AF, it does not favorably compare to the Canon R5/R6 and 2) the LCD, while amazing, is awkward to use in daylight for composition and menu access. Given these issues, what are your thoughts on the C70 for run and gun use?

I've already ordered one and one big issue (to me) I just realized is, it ONLY takes 24V via DC IN. This means that there are no batteries out there V-Mount or otherwise. I like V-Mounts for their long battery life, flexibility, and cost savings overall ... now I've got to spend crazy amounts for the BP batteries since I shoot 8-12 hour days. I actually reached out to Canon and they told me the power info on their site for this camera is wrong and the manual is correct and the only power they recommend for the DC IN is their power adapter, but they actually reached out to engineering and said they they only have the 24V voltage listing. There are expensive 26V batteries (no v mount plates) but canon couldn't confirm what any voltage tolerance was and whether it could damage the camera. Like how is it one of their smallest cinema cameras requires more power than any other canon cinema camera and they changed the voltage from every other camera they offer, so that professional cinema batteries won't work but now someone will have to make some niche power adapter/battery/cable and it'll be like 2K on it's own. (I found a 24V Arri power solution that was about that cost). Any solutions Gerald?
@alexsystems2001

I dunno how to best put it, BUT the C70 IS a compact cinema camera which means it will possibly be used for on the go filming. But it is lacking in IBIS, a viewfinder for outdoors and extreme lighting, a full frame sensor for both low light and to fully utilize the wider RF full frame glass for situations where you aren’t on a set and can’t have your camera back to capture the whole room. For someone doing a higher budget production on a set where you don’t have to overcome some of the environmental problems of not having a viewfinder and you have a whole studio to back away from the subject and stuff then you have the budget for a camera that can do raw and other stuff. I like the thought of the C70 and almost ordered one, BUT it doesn’t seem like the best choice in its segment especially for the price. If you can do raw full frame 4K from a full frame camera at the $3500 price point. It sort of makes this a tough sell. Like Gerald says, if you are already in the Canon ecosystem it’s a good camera... but I think that implies there are better if you are not tied to any brand.

Excellent coverage, as always Gerald. Thanks for all your time and hard work. Enjoying the camera so far, but a couple BIG gripes for me: 1) As you mentioned, no "one-button" af tracking activation. Not sure why this is an option for the R5/R6 but not this body. For example, I have "move to center" set to my M-Fn button near the shutter button on my R6's, and it's an absolute game changer for how you can shoot using their amazing DPAF. What it does is automatically engages tracking to whatever is in the center of the frame when pressed. Then you can just press it again to disengage to reacquire on a new subject. Brilliant, but sadly missing from the C70. 2) With 60p native (non S&F) being the best image quality vs the S&F 60/24, I wish Canon would allow us some quick switch options for one-button changes from 24 to 60 so we don't have to dive into menus or press multiple buttons to do this. Additionally, I wish they would allow for slow-mo playback in camera for the native 60p shooting, which IS an option in the R5/R6. This feature is somewhat buried in the mirrorless bodies, but it is there (you choose the second play option when playing back your clips then use the set wheel to slow down the playback to 24p). Why do the mirrorless alternatives have better options? Fortunately, these both seem to be correctable via firmware, but I don't know how common these gripes are and how to even relay the suggestions to them. If you have any ideas on that front I'd absolutely appreciate your insight. Otherwise a lovely camera, but game-changing details like these are a bummer, as I shouldn't be paying twice as much for a video camera and wishing it had video features from the cheaper options.

Awesome, Gerald! This is the one video I have been waiting from the moment we learned there's gonna be a C70. So, thank you! Before I start watching it again from the beginning, I just wanted to say that I think you just talked me out from buying an FX6. However, what about S-Cinetone...is there anything Canon can fight back with? It's pretty important for me to get beautiful cinematic image out straight from the camera. Cheers!

Thanks for the detailed on point review. I could feel more certain now that the C70 is a the choice for me. At least before Canon releases yet another RF mount camera that is completely or more dedicated to shooting video 😄

I know you probably won’t see this but I just want to say your videos are fenominal, so much time dedication and effort put in into making truly educational and thought out videos. Time and time again problems or issues I’ve had I’ve seen other KZbin’s that explain but just don’t quite explain enough or vice versa. I recently am havin a problem with my BMPCC 4K + Viltrox m2 ii ef + sigma art 18-38 were the footage is turning out hazy. I watched your video and it helped me understand a lot however the footage still seems more blurry than what I see in yours. Any suggestions???

Thanks C70 review! I was wondering if I would buy a C70 for work. But there is no review. Your review helped me. I decided to buy.

The review I've been waiting for! Your closing thoughts are exactly what I was thinking. A7siii is so similar in terms of imagine quality yet cheaper, smaller, Full frame, better autofocus and viewfinder. So difficult to decide what to go for. Got Canon lenses and shoot C200, Pocket 4Ks however want something easy to travel with and shoot without rigging.

Don’t doubt yourself man! We live in an age of cameras where each new model goes out of date after just a year. At the end of the day, you still have an amazing camera, and what matters is your knowledge and ability to make great footage from it.

First of all I wanted to lay out that I'm in fact part of the 45% but this is a thing of the past. Thank you for the excellent review. Just two questions. Are you planning to do a review about the af performance when using the ef 0,71x adapter. Canon stated that the af coverage would reduce to 60%, which seems logic. Interesting to see if ef lenses that are not supported so far are working well.

You are right. Everyone is different and the needs are unique to each person. For me, being a commercial shooter, having no SDI is the deal breaker.

All of this is why I haven't canceled my pre-order! Since I have the 16-35mm 2.8 III and several other EF lenses, I can't wait to try it with the adapter. Also, it would be a HUGE hassle to switch systems. Thank you for this!
