The CPUs are definitely improved on Mirror over 150cc. Though the silver lining to their driving lines not being complete ass is that you might actually see them pass you and be able to figure out where you’re losing time. (Like that last turn on Luigi Circuit - taking the outside of the turn with the boosts is usually faster, and the boost pads also offer you the benefit of instant acceleration if you get hit there.)

As someone who has played Mario Kart Wii for over 10 years and who has gotten 1 star on all the mirror mode cups before, I’ll make a recommendation: one strategy to maintain speed when going in a straight line is to do wheelies, which can be done by moving the Wii Remote upwards like when you preform a trick but when your on the ground. This strategy can prove helpful when trying to catching up to other racers or maintaining that coveted first place position. Also who you play as can also play a role in speed, characters such as Daisy, Baby Daisy and Funky Kong are among the fastest in the game. Which is also why they are used so often by players in online play.

As someone who grew up with this game I can say in terms of item balance the AI in Mario kart Wii is next level bullshit. Almost every Mario kart game has unfair AI, but definitely the 3 worst offenders are 64, Double Dash, and Wii. It was the only time in Mario kart history I actually gave up trying to unlock everything when I was younger playing it because I would get fucked over by the AI every single time right in front of the finish line… and then about 6 months ago. I finally did unlock everything, and it only took me a couple days.
