Not a gyro issue. He rolled inverted not realizing it and pulled up and drove that sucker into the ground like a fence post. Gyros are not evil and when properly set up are nearly flawless. They can also enhance the experience in many ways. Some of the older fellas at my club like them as do I on windy/puffy days. It helps smooth it all out and makes it a lot easier and SAFER for those failing reflexes to land and take off in a cross wind.

Maybe the gyro was playing up and made the plane hard to fly, but after he flies near the sun he keeps shouting "I cant see". After the impact he turns round and again says "I cant see". Cause of the crash seems pretty clear. No reason he would have kept saying "I cant See" if the main problem was the gyro. Presumably he was dazzled by the sun.?

I cant imagine needing one to have my aircraft look and feel "locked in" when flying. My thumbs are able to do that. They are gimmicks, not needed in a r/c jet aircraft. And yes, they do reduce the skills necessary to fly well, so yes, they do fly the aircraft. If you want to do a perfectly straight, level pass down the runway the gyro will KEEP the aircraft flying straight, and level, down the runway, no? Rhetorical question.

@@ragemore7750 You state: " If you want to do a perfectly straight, level pass down the runway the gyro will KEEP the aircraft flying straight, and level, down the runway, no? " The answer is "NO". A properly set up advanced gyro (we're not talking about Brand S "Safe" crap here) does not keep the the aircraft flying straight and level, and does nothing to enhance pilot skills. What it DOES do is make near instant micro corrections for wind gust upsets that you will never see from the ground. It is this feature that makes the plane feel "locked in". I have over a dozen planes, some with and some without gyros. Some of my scale models fly noticeably better with the gyro, since (much like the computers in the full scale version) the gyro helps augment the stability, which the design itself lacks. Now, if you're talking about flying an Ugly Stik, then yeah... no gyro. :)

First of all please don't post video's in portrait or your phone vertical, oh and Ricardo turn your phone sideways next time. That was not a Gyro malfunction, that was pilot error! Gyro's are for stabilizing your aircraft, they don't fly the plane. In my 8 years of flying I've never seen a gyro put a plane straight into the ground. He was inverted coming in almost straight at himself and panicked and pulled up, instead of pushing down or forward on the elevator. I don't use gyro's in my own planes, because I learned to fly without one. But I've flown friends planes that use AS3X and it just stabilizes the plane and I can't stand SAFE mode, I don't feel in full control of the plane. It's great for new pilots that try to over control the plane. No offence to the pilot, but he wasn't flying smooth like an experienced pilot that owns a $15K Jet would. That's my 2 cents on this video.

I've had people ask me many time if I'm using a gyro, I tell them yes my two thumbs. Just 5 months ago someone at my field lose a 17K Bolt plane on the maiden, also had a gyro but they couldn't turn if off. It also helps to have a good spotter that can help out and tell you what you need to do, like if gyro is on to turn it off. When your in trouble your not always thinking of turning things off your just trying to control the plane. Just the other day a buddy had a flame out I help talk him into what he needed to do. He also was going to belly land because he wasn't thinking about putting the gear down until I told him he was just trying to save his plane. It all ended well. Sorry for your lost

Usually I do the full maiden flight with no gyro in use for the optimal trimming and than maybe on the second flight starting the gyro up there 400’ and see what is doing with at least two modes and for 100% the kill switch just in case, that usually works best and safe

If you install a decent gyro, not one from China, but something that is designed to work with a model plane, you can let it help you, not fly the plane for you. Maybe he thought the gyro would get the plane back level or something, but that is not what a properly installed gyro does. It should take the edge of rough conditions.... Nothing wrong with gyros as long as they’re setup with care. First rule ALWAYS is to set it up to be turned on and off via a switch. Never maiden with it permanently on just in case gain is too high or stabilization is backwards. Second, never use it on a maiden, and in fact don’t use it at all until the aircraft is completely setup correctly and flying perfect WITHOUT the gyro. You should have a good flying plane first, then add the gyro functionality. Really sad to see, I know exactly how much these things cost. As well, anytime you might be unsure, always ask someone. I know people at times wanna act like can do it all, but sometimes it’s always good to have someone else look over your work just to be sure you don’t miss anything.
@96royalstar212 жыл бұрын
This is all True. I had a airplane that I did this with. Flew it with the gyro on a 3 position switch. Stabilization position 1 , OFF on position 2, hover on position 3 with adjustable gain on a knob. I had flew in high crosswinds and minor cross winds for 30-40 flights. Decided I wanted to try hover which it did fine, when I moved to off the position the plane was uncontrollable. I fought for 20secs until it plowed in. After checking all the servos and control surfaces, I put the receiver on radio test stand, which checked out and I installed in another plane it function fine and still does. Finally I put the Gyro on the test stand and the gyro was mixing the elevator and Ailerons continuously on both off and stabilization modes. Lesson learned.... spend the money on a name brand Gyro then set it up as 10fantic calls out.

Gyros can & do go bad, its good to record a noise plot from them, ie, something like betaflight blackbox logs, so you can compare your last fights with the first. I'm not sure what flavour of gyro most use in fixed wings but if its anything like the IMU's we use in quadcopters this certainly applies. Still though, on a $15,000 device I would not want a cheap MPU6000 augmenting its control. You would use something far superior & more stable like pinpoint ring gyros, like single axis CRM100 combined with two single axis CRM200's (which are orthogonal mounted), extremely low drift and long-term reliability over time, made explicitly for these IMU applications in critical aircraft like a $15000 device.

It rolled like it was on a wire and everything left including trims only made it a slightly slower roll. No throttle just fuel shutoff & it didn't work. Someone had set up in the pits but before we could check I lost it and it augured in. The person in the pits took off in a hurry so I was always suspicious, but I'll never know. Or better yet just don't fly gyro at all! The plane will be a little 'jerkier' in gusty winds, other than that it will fly identically (assuming gyro is set as a stability aid and not training wheels). I am of the 'no gyro' camp, while sometimes temping, if you are not always practicing your "A-game", you will not have the skills when you need them most. You need instant muscle memory to correct when a gust catches you on a fast low pass... and you need to be used to knowing the difference between movements requiring correction and just the standard higher frequency jerkiness of gusty winds.

any rc plane crash is good, but big pricey plane crashing are the best

I just put a gyro in my first giant scale plane, now I’m afraid to use it.
@randalldavis21162 жыл бұрын
Don't be afraid to use the gyro but do not use it in your Maiden flight do all your trimming first but like a lot of people upset on here that Gyros don't mess up their very wrong I know Gyros can become faulty and do weird things I've been in this hobby for over 40 years. Anything that's electronic can malfunction

That wasn't the gyro, it was the setup and the pilot

It,ll buff out. Carry on.

The pilot said he can't see it, it happens, but that's a lot of money to lose not to be able to see a jet right in front of you.

Wasn't me this time. You shouldn't fly at that field, it brings out they worst in pilots. I cannot believe someone has not died there, yet...

I felt so bad when my 1st plane crashed and it cost me $500.00! I wanted to cry,but there were too many people around as I gathered up my pride laying on the ground in splinter's because that big ass Oak Tree jumped in the air and grabbed it. But $15000.00???? I don't want to know the feeling the way you lived it. At least you walked away from the landing!

At the end of the day, I'd rather be in control of the plane than a gyro.
