As requested by Subscribers, We're now going to start looking at the X670E Motherboards. And as You have Outlined, And as You have requested, Our first Motherboard We're going to start with is going to be the Gigabyte X670E Aorus Xtreme Slots and Storage Overview. This is all about Content Creation and High Performance Storage. This is not about Form. This is all about Function. We have a Motherboard Block Diagram and We'll reverse engineer and sort out the CPU PCIe Lanes and Chipset PCIe Lanes.
Question: DDR5 ECC Support? No mention in current Bios Manual of DDR RAS ECC Support! To reiterate, We should see a setting under, Under DDR RAS, DDR ECC. Gigabyte Bios Manual is Generic to AMD X670 Chipset.
Note: Lane count. Does a Device use 2 Lanes or 4 Lanes. Built on vs Add in card. Depends!

Huge thanks for this really useful video. It's going to be interesting to see how other X670E boards allocate resources. I'm still hoping to use a 4 drive nvme expander card in that primary x16 slot, and, a dedicated GPU that's not 'too' compromised on speed. Looks like this Gigabyte board won't allow that. I don't mind reducing some other features to enable this though that might depend on what AMD dictates is a minimum to the board partners. I do currently have the Zenith II TRX40 (a chipset unfortunately EOL'd by AMD after only one CPU series) so I might alternatively be hanging onto it, though my Zen2 3960X is going to be really shown up by a Zen4 desktop CPU. I've been a keen HEDT enthusiast for a long time (not a pro user) so I'm interested in how AM5/Zen4 has advanced in comparison to my current setup (reluctantly ignoring the PCIe lane count difference).

I know that sWRX8 socket TR PRO board cost more money, but eight channel ram and an extra 104 cpu lanes is worth the investment.
@ChrisM541
@ChrisM541 Жыл бұрын
@@maxhughes5687The primary issue, apart from the significantly increased cost of sWRX8 (and greatly reduced motherboard choice), is that TRX40 was already 'the perfect enthusiast HEDT system' - and the #1 requirement here would be an expected 'longevity of support'...support they did indeed promise... That AMD very, very deliberately chose to abandon TRX40 after only one CPU cycle - despite enticing so many with that now 'infamous long term support promise' is a pretty serious self-damning act. As I said, I currently have a Zenith II TRX40 system with 3960X CPU. That very Zen2 CPU is already behind the times with Zen3 high end desktop CPU's, and about to be severely downgraded through Zen4 desktop CPU's. That's NOT the position every TRX40 owner wants to find themselves in. AMD could have pacified some owners by releasing a Zen3 3D CPU. That they deliberately didn't is beyond shocking. --> To deliberately destroy your entire HEDT community is...insane! I am, of course, interested in how far Zen4 and AM5 has advanced, and in particular - since this is a desktop - how PCIe lane allocation is managed through the different boards. Clearly, AM5 will be severely compromised on PCIe compared to my current TRX40 - just as every 'desktop' motherboard has been PCIe-compromised since day #1 (and I started my computing interest a very long time ago). --> To repeat, for AMD to deliberately destroy its entire HEDT community is...insane!
@maxhughes5687
@maxhughes5687 Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisM541 "long term support" doesn't mean using the same socket over and over. 48 cpu lanes to the PCIe sockets only gives you two X16 sockets. TR PRO went from 4000 pins to 6000 pins that gives the user 2X the cpu lanes and twice the RAM bandwidth. That is a hell of a great upgrade. Your just quoting AMD bashing from Intel fan channels. Next year it will be a new socket for 12 channel ram and 256 cpu lanes. The TRX40 was a nice jump to GEN4 lanes, but the WRX80 is a huge leap to double the I/O.

Amazing video! I'm still learning the ropes at pc building so I'll admit a fair bit of this went over my head for now (but I'm taking notes for later). Am I understanding correctly that if I put the gpu in the x16 then I can use 2 NVME m.2 cards/sticks instead of 1, and if I use more than 2 it'll knock my gpu down to x8? Also, I noticed you mentioned some lanes being used on the left side for the usb ports in the back, does that mean they're unavailable if I use all 24 lanes on the gpu/nvme or do they have lanes separate for that?
@BuildOrBuy
@BuildOrBuy Жыл бұрын
Hi ThatBarnabusGuy, Welcome! Good You're doing Your Research! Fascinating topic! Look at the Motherboard Block Diagram on any X670E Motherboard. There are two types of PCIe Lanes, CPU PCIe Lanes and Chipset PCIe Lanes. There is one CPU and 2 Chips make the X670E Chipset. There are 32 CPU PCIe Lanes and 16 Chipset PCIe Lanes per Chipset Chip. CPU Lanes can be Split among PCIe Lanes and can be further Split or Bifurcated to allow multiple M.2 NVMe PCIe Drives on a Slot. Generically when there's 2 X16 PCIe Slots, mechanically, when used simultaneously they are X8, electrically. And those are to the CPU. Only CPU PCIe Lanes can be further Split or Bifurcated. And a 3rd PCIe Slot will be through the Chipset. USB can be anywhere among those three and are always Dedicated Resources. We Outline PCIe Resources accordingly from Slots and Storage to other high use Resources like 20Gbps USB-C, 10GbE LAN, etc. On a Consumer Desktop Motherboard there are Shared PCIe Resources instead of Dedicated PCIe Resources. Lots of Connectors just not all usable at same time. Choices and Options which become obvious once pointed out! Crazy, right! Appreciate Your Questions! Hope that helps! And every Motherboard has a different Resource allocation! Once You look at a Motherboard based on that, You can stick to the facts in sorting each accordingly!

I have a different request for you: Is there any possible way I could get you to try a configuration for me? I have an X570 motherboard (I know you can't test this same motherboard and exact same hardware but I'll get to that in a moment) I own an MSI X570 Creation Prestige motherboard. It came with the MSI X-Pander M.2 card to put 2 x PCIE-4.0-4x NVME drives in it and install them in the second PCIE-8x slot. It does have a RAID option in bios. What I was thinking of doing was this: Use the XPANDER card for 2 NVME drives and then add 2 more using the two onboard M.2 drives under the heatsink and then try to RAID-0 4 x NVME drives together on this platform. I know you have at least 4 x matching NVME Drives and I know you have a few of the M.2 expansion cards by various companies that split out a PCIE slot to 2 or 4 NVME ports. Is there any way I could get you to try any X570 motherboard and try 2 NVME drives in the onboard ports and 2 on a splitter card in the second 8x slot (And try any kind of video card in the first slot to see if a video card would still work with this configuration) and see if they will all 4 RAID-0 together? I wanted to try this configuration but I have searched everywhere on the internet and even had 4 friends helping me try to google and I can't find anyone anywhere on the internet that has ever even attempted this type of configuration on any X570 motherboard. It's not a configuration described in the manual for my motherboard. It's not described in the manual for any other X570 motherboard (I looked at those) and I can't find anything to indicate "Is it possible? Does it work? Does it not work?" I'm aware I'll have to use windows 10 to use them raided together as a RAID Array and I'm aware it's a "SoftRAID solution" and I'm fine with all of that. I would just like to know if it's possible before I buy 4 more NVME drives. You might be the only one to figure out "yes or no" if this would work and share this information with us so I hope you could help me and help others. Normally we would have to use ThreadRipper for this but if this would work on X570 systems this would be great for a lot of people.

Only Gigabyte is giving Us enough Data to Parse right now. Have another Subscriber gun ho about an MSI X670E however, more about form than function. Like buying paint at an auction!
