as someone who watched Naruto as one of their first animes. I can still remember the feeling of being fully brought into the story and always actually being excited for the next episode or to see how the characters evolved, obviously 100s of animes later I can see the flaws, but when judging it is based off the experience you had when watching it and not the technical standpoint of what they did right or wrong writing wise or the crazy amount of fillers, it is great. This is why naruto is peak for me...
@newbie47892 жыл бұрын
Yeah .. it is quite weird that despite having a LOT of issues with the show, the people who have experienced it as an early show in their anime viewing history keep it quite close to heart. I'm one myself, I have a lot of friends who does that and I think even Garnt is one of us😂. Rating Naruto is hard because everyone who has seen it in their prime, has a special place for the show

@@newbie4789 shippuden's story is great imo. the parts with itachi and sasuke were peak, would have been great if not for the fillers
@newbie47892 жыл бұрын
@@Aestareth_ parts are great ofc but the entire story? Not so much. As Garnt said, The 4th Ninja war is one of the worst arc. It's just mindless powerscaling and abilities just coming out of thin air. The pain arc was amazing, Itachi arc was also great and the final fight between Naruto and Sasuke was soo well done. But the over-all show isn't that much. The first arc of Shippuuden was dragged out to no end and the dragging was visible from the very first watching. There were soo many fillers between and was quite annoying (the OG Naruto had a big collection of fillers at the end but you could skip the entire last 70 episodes of the show without missing anything... I'm saying as someone who actually watched all of them) Shippuuden fillers are less interesting, scattered around, and the main story isn't that hype at all points too. Though one thing I have to say it that the hype moments of Shippuuden were REALLY HYPE. But then again, a lot of them were reaping the results of what was sowed in Naruto. They were mainly conclusion to mysteries. If I have to say, Naruto can actually be in the top anime spot if they can rewrite the Ninja war a bit and make an edited version of the show without useless fillers. A full on restructuring (not remaking, I genuinely believe the animation and soundtrack departments were some of the best) is something Naruto as a show can appreciate the most

I wish Garnt had elaborated more on FLCL, as I disagree that many shows have copied it. Because it wasn’t just the animation and music, but the unique way they showed a boy maturing both physically and emotionally through both the visual metaphors and story. And it did it all in only six episodes, so much like Baccano was more focused than Durarara as Garnt himself said, I think FLCL is more focused than any show that might try to copy it. It was also an unofficial swan song to the era of OVAs, as almost all OVAs afterwards were merely bonus episodes for anime series and not stand alone. So it has also the cultural significance to it along with being one hell of a solid show. I’ve seen nearly 200 anime, and it’s still #4 for me and I usually watch it once a year.

Because if not, then their themes are very different. “Growing up” covers a massive amount of angles, FLCL does focus on specific ones, so another coming of age story may not be that similar.

@@doctordoom85 sonny boy does look at it from a good few different angles, and relationships are indeed one of them. although it doesn't really dive into the toxicity of those possible relationship. it's more the "entering the real world after high school angle" it also largely mixes it's theme growing up with philosophical ideas like the meaning of death in world of immortality and the value of taking action. it kinda has an adolescent meets optimitic nihilism as it's core message. but the main reason I compare them is their "style". idk how to describe it, but if you watch a few clips, or better yet watch the entire show (it's great, I would put it in my top 5) you should get why I'm saying this.

Unless that happen, the show is definitely S tier, but anyway, I'm sure that's not gonna happen, right? ...right?

At this point I kinda wanna avoid calling myself an anime fan to people who aren't friends of mine (unless I'm wearing merch or a series gets brought up or whatever), not because of embarrassment or anything like that, but of not wanting to be associated with shonen junkies. I've seen/read most of the shonen series they mentioned to at least some extent, but good god man there's so much more to the world of anime than this. FOURTEEN of the top 25 are straight up shonen manga adaptations, and this doesn't even feel like an unreasonable representation of the anime discussion I see on the english web. Other series have fragments of discussion in comparison. The other 11 slots are split across genres, anime originals etc. Like there's only ONE shoujou adaptation, ONE seinen adaptation, ONE light novel adaptation (despite how everpresent we deeper in the anime fandom may feel they are), ZERO visual novel adaptations, god forbid any jousei adaptations. It's just depressing man. So by the end, it's really not surprising to see the number one slot held by the consensus "yeah we like this one" shounen anime... Also, the honourable mentions are of higher quality on average than the top 25 lmao

That's why I would never try to get in a conversation about anime outside of the internet, if someone in your class or whatever is talking about anime, the only way of actually getting some kinda of conversation is talking about a shounen, finding someone to discuss something like the Monogatari series at random must be like finding a bag of money in the middle of the road.

Neon Genesis is iconic, one of the first Anime I saw that was aimed for a mature audience after all the younger audience stuff I watched on TV early in the mornings before going to school. So Neon Genesis was up there for being iconic of showing Anime aimed for a teenager and older audiences. Also include Bubblegum Crisis both the 80s version and the late 90s Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 on that list too. For Magical Girl fans, Sailor Moon is iconic enough to be up there as well as Demon Hunter Yoko for comparison for a mature version of a 90s Magical Girl series. I think the top one should be Eiken OVA as that was classic series that was worth a good laugh and a half.

For films, it would be A Thousand and One Nights i think. The problem when it comes to judging a shonen from a writing point of view, and judging it from a nostalgic front of view. Everyone is going to rank them differently depending what they mean to you. Not necessary because we grew up with them. But sometimes you just don’t care too much about all of them. Like Naruto means a lot to me. But not because I grew up with it, but it’s also because the characters did a lot for me compared to other series. Something like HXH or or Yu Yu. I enjoyed them but I don’t love them. And if they happen to be better written then most shonen out there. That’s completely OK to give credit where credit is due. But at the end of the day if these series mean nothing to me and the characters didn’t do anything for me either. Then I’m not obligated to love the same show or rank it higher just because someone else found more value into it then me.

One reason why shounens come at the top of these lists made by people outside of anime fandom I think is that Shounen show type is the one thing that is almost exclusively good in anime media. Most other genres like Drama, slice of life, sci-fi, and even seinen stuff are much more general. Western tv shows, Hollywood movies, and other media all have these other genre but Shounen. And that's why I think Shounen is the entry point for people into anime and why shounen are the ones that get a big name outside the community
