God of War Theory: Blades of Chaos

Very few weapons in gaming strike fear in the enemies' heart the way the blades of chaos, but the blades were lost for 3 games and all of the sudden they appear in midgard, quite mysterious, but luckily ive come up with two theories that might wet you appetite for when the second game releases.

Sorry if im wrong But there is a game called Shovel Knight and there was Secret Boss and it was Kratos of god of War ( the creator of God of war confirmed that thw Fight with shovel knight and Kratos is Canon to the story cuz Kratos gave the knight the Shovel from the Old man of gow 1 the one who made a path for you exit the Hell ) by Fighting him You see he has still the Blades of Exile why does he Fight fight with them and not with the Blade of Chaos what happend tho the Blades of exil after the Fight

Why wouldnt Kratos have had the blades of exile instead of the blades of chaos? The blades of exile survived Zeus's final attack. So it would have made more sense for Kratos to have kept those and not get two swords which have no clear reason as to why he'd have them.

It's impossible for him to get rid of them. He tries multiple times in the God of War novelization. Which follows the new game precisely, except when he goes back to retrieve the blades in the game there's an extra part in the book. That talks about him stabbing himself with a blade of Olympus realizing he can't die by his own hand and getting up and leaving. He tries to throw the blades off a cliff but a strong wind blows him up to his feet. He goes out to the Sea and tries to throw the boys in the sea. Is he gets violent and angry and destroys his boat. He wakes up a washed on a strange to shore with the boys right beside him. Every attempt of him to throw them away they just come back. So he buries them under his house 50 years before the events of the new God of War. and that's Canon by the way the audiobook is read by the guy who does the voice of Mimri it's awesome

He obviously brought them with him. "Dig up a past i swore to keep buried" and all that. He knew exactly were they were and i believe Athena was there to show his past still haunts him. They didnt just grow legs and show up wrapped in a blanket underneath his house. Kratos brought the blades with him, stashed then under the floorboards and thats why he forbade Atreus from going underneath his home, which is mentioned many times.

first of all Blades of Chaos, and Blades of Athena from GoW2 are the exact same weapon. in GoW1&2 there is a lot of inconsistencies with continuity regarding the Blades in cutscenes (mostly for gameplay purposes). The Blades of Athena in GoW3 are remade by Athena's ghost in the underworld into the Blades of Exile. Oh and by the end of GoW3 it is implied that ALL Greek Gods died (including Artemis) when Gia fell on Olympus. As for how the Blades ended up in Midgard, kratos simply kept them. Kratos decided to keep the Blades after his curse was lifted in GoW3 as a reminder of how he let his anger destroy his life. Controlling emotions becomes a big part of GoW2018s plot Kratos didn't want his son to make the same mistake he did all those years ago.

the blades of athena and chaos are not the same, when he killed ares he was blade less, Athena gave the new ones, no curse has been lifted yet. He's still imortal. He's still full of rage. Also from a psychological point of view, he would not keep them as a reminder because of all the evil he did with them. I do believe he went to get them afterwards years of training his rage, and becoming more altruistic towards people, because they were too dangerous to be left alone. thats way i think atreus says "he;s never here" now in regard to artemis you may have a point, im not sure, I know that it would be really cool if we see her in midgsrd, tracking kratos, she certainly has the M.O. thanks for your comment.

I think there is a bit of magic at work here that makes the blades follow Kratos, tempting him to put them back on and loose control. There was a comic book that states Kratos went to the woods to master his anger. That is why he was always gone.

You sort of right, in the novelisation of God of war (2018) when he went to fetch the blades, he thought back to after he survived(it doesn't say how he survived). Basically he went around olympus looking for the blades of chaos, when he did, he tried to throw it off a cliff as a final act of defiance to the greek gods but, like kratos at the end of GOW 1, the blades floated back up to him. He then tried to throw them into the ocean, but this made the ocean get so rough that it destroyed the boat kratos was on. When kratos awoke he was on a beach with the blades next to him, he then decided to keep them.

In reality I know those blades are not blades of chaos. What I think Cory did was to use the artistic license and summarise all the blades we use in the last GoW trilogy as Blades of Chaos for the conveniences of the audience. But still, its fun to speculate.

This is my theory : Kratos always had the blades of chaos, even after the events of GOW 1 but he didn't use them because it was the symbol of all the blood and carnage he caused in servitude to Ares as well as a reminder of the murder of his wife and child. He hid them away so that no one else can fall prey to the curse of the blades and become the tyrant he became. After GOW 3, before moving to midgard, he recovered the blades of chaos and took it with him so that he could guard them and no one else will fall prey to the temptation of their powers.

Or something like that... which means Midgar is a separate realm than Olympus which would mean technically neither Olympus or Midgar are on Earth but there own realms. I have heard people say that when he became the God of War he also got access to Ares’ arsenal. I've always seen Athena in GOW 2018 as a hallucination from Kratos. Athena's death is the one he feels guilty the most about (even though she isn't dead and ascended into we don't know what). She comes up there and only there in the game, no hints that she might be around before. To me it's Kratos thinking about his past and using that form to tell it to go away. As for the blades, aren't the blades of olympus made out of the blade of Athena wich were made out of the blade of chaos? If they are, killing the gods could have downgraded them as they aren't filled by their magic anymore

Kratos grieved more for Pandora than he did with Athena. Kratos was remorseful about it at first but at the end of GOW3 its revealed that Athena wanted Kratos power for herself so she can rule Olympus or someshit. It was the main reason why he gutted himself because his power was released back into the world upon death.

My theory is that the Blades of Chaos are the same as the Athena ones. Because she just fixed them and that's it. Then she upgraded them to the blades of exile when they were damaged. But in the end,Zeus destroys most of Kratos' equipment,so probably the blades reverted from the exile to the chaos ones.

The blades really explain how hiding things won't help. You have to integrate the 'bad' stuff into your being, and Kratos does exactly that. He's still a monster, but he has it under control, and he uses it for what it's worth. Carl Jung explains this as the shadow.

Theory within a theory = theoryception I do agree that I think he went to Greece at some point to retrieve the blades somehow. And an added note, in the GOW digital comic, it shows that before Faye died, Kratos would go out multiple times into the forest and would let enemies attack him so he can control his anger. However, it seems that when Kratos does this, it appears that he would leave in the morning and return during late evening of the same day. It was stated in the 'Official Atreus Story Trailer' that Atreus would wake up to his father gone, which was normal, and this left Atreus alone all day with his mom to teach him Norse things. This may have a factor in Atreus saying "he always leaves". The "you left me alone, AGAIN" line could be referring to him going to get the blades and being gone for a long time, and the "he always leaves, he's never here" could be referring to when Kratos leaves to battle enemies in the forest.

If Artemis would like to be the "Hey remember me?"-cliche for the fitting of a revenge theme, I wouldn't be impressed that much. This is because there wasn't much of a charachter development with Artemis going on. Athena and Zeus are the only two gods who made an appearance in the GOW norse realm, though in form of a hallucination, according to Kratos and Mimir. "Get out of my head". But this would make me say that these two gods still have more power over Kratos, and motive to be involved in a revenge scheme, then Artemis would be. Now from a humanity's understanding and point of view, no one in their right mind would save the Blades of Chaos after all he has been through. So, I personally think the blades got attached to him through the works of magic casted by a god. Athena's currently narcissistic personality would see to that if you'd ask me. And if it was for the sake of preventing Artemis from gaining power, he could also go back to see to it that the other weapons would be out of reach. If that's the case, the we might still see a blade of Olympus. Keep in mind that both time travel and realm travel to other lands is possible in Midgard. With these two unstable powerful features, the story can still go into any direction. Curtis Boy also made some interesting videos recently and I commented on his theories too. He catches on this idea that Gow as a franchise thrives on the drama story that involves tragedy, betrayal and revenge. And putting the emphasis on making a deal with a god that cost him his soul, is what was the biggest lauch of the story of Kratos. In the latest GOW, the revenge triggers weren't layed within Kratos (yet). Kratos, due to circumstance he didn't anticipate on, layed these triggers in other charachters, like Freya and the Aesir gods for what happened to their sons. Odin is heavily described as the paranoia control freak. We have yet to see this in action. Now here is what keeps my mind buggling. Why would Kratos say to Atreus "No, this is YOUR story"? I'd love to see you make a video about that. Because I can't see a reason to say that to your son without explaining why. He hasn't yet seen the mural behind the curtain when he says this. So why is this Loki's story only, according to Kratos? Does it have something to do with what he said earlier about still having strength for the quest? You know what helps making these theory videos? Ask yourself what you would like to see in the upcoming games, and what would you put in if you were the creative director. Can you think like a Barlog?

Its a remembrance of his shame that he carries with him to this day. It makes perfect sense. Its a symbol more than anything. In my opinion, Kratos got them back after GoW 3. There is a huge gap between the 3rd and 4th installment. Many hings may have happened, as well as him retrieving the blades of chaos. But who knows, hopefully next game will clear some thigns up. Especially about this huge gap.

I would have assumed that in between GOW3 and GOW4 Kratos returned to Greece and explored the ruins of Mount Olympus and somewhere he discovered his old Blades Of Chaos and took them back. We all know that he left his Blades of Exile on that mountain area where he killed his father Zeus along with his Uncle Hades's Claws of Hades and the Nemesis Whip he received from his older half brother Hephaestus before he killed him.

Athena was in his head 1) because Mimir couldn’t see who Kratos was talking to when he acknowledged her direct insult to him by saying he will always be a monster and 2) because when Kratos killed Athena, it was a necessary accident for him to make, in her eyes, because she defending Zeus from being killed by his own son. Keyword here is accident. She was of the very few Olympians Kratos had befriended, and somewhat trusted and would never talk down to him for the sacrifice she clearly made all on her own. However, Kratos doesn’t see it this way. He feels the centuries worth of pain and regret from his past actions bearing down on him in Atreus’ time of need, for which he blames himself and the ultimate disembodied reminder he associates all of his repressed emotions with is a (in Kratos’ eyes at least) rightfully spiteful, ghost of Athena. The ONE Olympian he never truly intended to kill.

A few thing i wanted to clear up 1. Hades isn't the God of Death, He's the God of the Underworld. the God of Death is Thanatos 2. Asphodel is pronounced As-fo-del and it's the Greek equivalent to Limbo or purgatory. It's not good or bad. If you live a life that was not particularly special or evil then you spend the rest of eternity walking through the meadows never feeling tired or anything really with no memory of anything. 3. Dionysus was the Wine God but he was no pushover. He regularly turned people that angered him to animals, He had the power to curse mortals with insanity (which Kartos is clearly susceptible to) and he even Killed a giant single handed with nothing but an Acorn on a stick. He might be a drunk but He's still one of the 12 Major olympian Gods.

Cool theory. Just one thing regarding what the boy said to kratos, about him always leaving. There was a digital comic that came with the collectors edition of GOW, it's a short prequel story that explains exactly where kratos goes... Dealing with his anger and rage, kratos would spend his days in the surrounding forests battling his own anger, keeping distance between himself and his family to protect them from himself, it is implied that he is troubled by his past and is consumed by rage and guilt, and he deals with it by being alone in the forest and by hunting to feed his family. I don't believe kratos ever traveled back to Greece to retrieve his blades, the comic tells us his daily routine is hunting, spending his days away, returning home only to sleep, plus Greece was completely destroyed. It's likely he retrieved the blades of chaos upon defeating aries.

There was a video done by Overly Sarcastic Productions, where they explained the reason Dyonisius is on the pantheon on the first place it's because he used to be the God of Madness and he's actually much more of a treat that they give him credit for, but overtime his symbol, wine, became the main reason people recognize him, and losing his ties to Darkness and madness.

Man the novel answer that quiet cleanly. Kratos have some curses! Main one its the fact he cant kill himself, that's why he didn't die in the end of GoW3. Other one is also the fact he cant take off the blades of chaos... The blades have eternal bound with him... What if like a god Kratos could possibly summon the blades of Chaos. Kinda like the major 3 Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon had their trio of killer weapons. IE: The bolt of lighting from Zeus, The helm of of invisibility, and then Poseidon's Trident. I believe that the major 3 could either summon these special weapons or always had them in some alternate form. What if the Blades of Chaos were something similar to a physical interpretation of Kratos's soul. And the secret behind the blades is that Kratos up untill the collapse of the major Olympians Kratos could summon them from his soul. Another theory could be that maybe Artemis offered up one last favor as Kratos was leaving Greece. What if instead of being mad with Kratos. She herself gave Kratos the Blades of Chaos as one last gift for killing her family for looking down upon her huntresses. As its common knowledge Artemis was a outcast when it came to those who were Olympians. As its often the Sun aka Apollo who got the praise and it was Artemis who was forgotten.

Hm.. I don't think it was Athena who brought the blades, because: 1st, Kratos knew where they were. 2nd, Cory already hinted that they were inside the house when he said at some point the camera focused on the place where the blades are hidden while blackening. I think he got them back after becoming a god of war, maybe the blades were placed in the throne room of Ares, therefore Kratos found them and hid them at that time, before the events of God of War II and III, but after the events of GOW 3 he went to get them before starting his journey to the north in case someone who's powerful tracks him.

Ares' body was in physical form(trapped in the ice) . It may be because he was untouched by the evils of Pandora's box( although he was evil to begin with). According to Athena , Kratos was imbued with Hope while the Gods were imbued with the evils. Thus when Kratos killed them , it released the evils into the world. Only with Hope it could be nullified which Kratos gives to the world at the end of GOW 3.

Maybe Athena knows she can't simply beat Kratos cause look at the other games. But torturing him may of been enough of a victory for her. She sent the blades back to Kratos to haunt him with his family, making him think his past will always repeat. Unable to simply get rid of them he hides them in his house but things always keep happening that causes him to go near their hiding spot. (Part of my Theory that Athena is actually the main antagonist of the new set of games) meaning that memory is always being remembered. Could also be why he leaves alot in Atreus' life. It was him trying to hide that blades as far away as he could.

I think Athena cursed him with the blades of chaos as punishment for what he did with the power of hope. Releasing it out on the world in the land of the Olympians. Once she found out Kratos was still alive she must've bonded him with the blades of chaos again to torture him. It's kinda ironic if you think about it because in the first game she was trying to help him end his suffering from the memories of killing his wife and child and now she wants to torture him and never let him forget his past. I think whenever he had reached Midgard, Kratos ran into Faye and asked her for help with the curse. With Norse magic, she was able to take the blades off of him and then he decided to keep them hidden for whenever he needs to use them again as we see in God of War when he had to go to Helheim to save Atreus. I also think whenever he is using the blades or intend to, he hallucinates Athena taunting him about his past and calling him out on what he really is. I say hallucinate because Mimir didn't notice her. He just was listening to Kratos talking to himself or whatever. That's my theory

Tyler Todd I think he is tyr. My theory is when ragnarok happens and the serpent is pushed back in time they go back in time too and kratos becomes much wiser and meets Faye. This builds his relationship with the giants and he becomes tyr.

Kratos is the son of Zeus and a Callisto, a demigod who’s grandparents Cronos and Rhea and great grandparents are Ouranos and Gaea. Tyr is Odins son so they can’t be related at all.

It was officially revealed in Novel that the reason Kratos still has the blades is because he is unable to get rid of them as no matter how hard he tries they always come back to him. He first throws them off a cliff but a strong wind blows them back up landing at his feet. He also tries throwing them in the ocean but even the sea doesn’t want them as Krato’s boat gets destroyed and he wakes up washed ashore with the blades right next to him so in the end he decides to bury them under his house 50 years prior to the events of God Of War 4

But it’s not like she’s a normal ghost either, she removed the blade of Olympus when Kratos tried to kill him self and released the power of hope to the Greek lands. Other problems which no one cares about which I have is that Loki is supposed to kill Baldur by tricking his twin blind brother Hodr into firing a mistletoe tipped arrow at him; afterwards Hermod, his other twin or triplet was sent by Odin to go to Hel on Slepnir and retrieve Baldur’s soul, but a giantess blocked the bridge to Hel keeping Baldur locked forever. Baldurs other brother, Vali tries to avenge Baldur by killing Hodr and tying Loki underground where Jormungandr would drop venom on him creating earthquakes; Loki is released when Ragnarok comes and faces Heimdall in which they both kill each other. Don’t forget that Loki is Atreus. Does this all happen? Well not Hodr being tricked.

Ok since I haven’t seen anyone else say it I will. After killing Ares, Kratos became the god of war and there for gained all the weapons that Ares had, including the Blades of Chaos. But he swore he would never use them again which is why he then uses the Blades of Athena. As to why he brought them with after swearing to never touch them again, is beyond me but yeah he owned them and chose not to use them

I am a fan of the theory that the Blades of Chaos, Athena, and Exile are all the same. The original blades were empowered by Ares. Then Athena in her living form. When the blades were drained of power and damaged, they had to be reimbued with power from Ghost Athena. They are probably the same blades that were always there. when he woke up, the blades were back with him even though he threw them away.

My theory is the god of war (originally ares) can give these chains to anyone, as he owns them. When kratos assumed the throne he became the owner of the blades and as ares brought these blades from essentially nowhere. I believe kratos had the same power to bring these original blades from nowhere. Kratos may have summined them to euther bind someone if he ever needed to or he brought them with himself as either protection or a subconscious reminder of the things he did.

I actually have a different theory that's a little darker. The blades of chaos are actually something he received as the God of War to give to some other poor mortal. He had a personal connection so he kept them when he fled to the Norse realms in case he couldn't find a suitable weapon.

Simple. Kratos is cursed to have the Blades of Chaos with him forever as a remainder of his horrible past and the horrible things he has done. The Blades are part of his being. They are one with the wielder. He tries to throw them from a cliff but a strong wind brings them back at his feet. He tries to dump them in the sea, but the sea rejects them, destroys his ship and throws him on the shore and when he recovers the blades are next to him. After this he gives up trying to get rid of them and takes them with him, wraps them in his former attire and hides them beneath the floor of his home. Even if he would have left them in Greece the blades would have found their way back to him sooner or later.

I have a theory called a Soul theory. When Blade of Chaos was stripped away from him and Kratos was given Blade of Athena, the blade actually represented his soul. Blade of Chaos is a sign of his allegiance with Ares, afterall. What support this theory further, that the blade change when it's required. Blade of Athena: Kratos is a God, so the Blade shall grand him wisdom. And Blade of Athena can be seen being corrupted aka turning from blue to red in Ghost of Sparta and GOW3. Blade of Exile: leading him to Fire of Olympus. When the blade has no purpose after defeating Zeus, it reverts to its origin,Blade of Chaos.

My theory is that after gutting himself in GOW 3 he wakes up in the overflowing sea of an Apocolyptic Greece in disappointment, realising that not even death can grant him a swift escape the memories that haunt him. The only thing he can do is leave the land those memories were encompassed by as his last desperate measure to end his living nightmare. Unaware of the threats he could encounter upon leaving, having no strength from his power impeding wound and posessing the Blade of Olympus no longer, he decides that arming himself with anything will be wise. Luckily he doesn't have to look far because whilst contemplating his choices, he notices that hes partially trapped in some seaweed so he frees himself to begin the not so promising search. Only to find that somewhere in the seaweed entanglement are his OG Blades of Chaos wrapped around his arms (last place they were seen was in the sea. The last place Kratos was (GOW3) was in the sea (Rolled of Mt Olympus after Suicide) Perhaps Destiny brought the 2 back together so the events of GOW4 do come to fruition. It cant be fate tho that's for sure, because Kratos killed them.

The only reason I know the blades have been there for a while, is cuz after the Stranger fight, in the beginning, Atreus is like, "you told me never to go down there" after Kratos tells him to hide in the hidden room. That was the room where he hid the blades. Kratos told him a long time ago to never mess around in there so that he never found the blades. So I think like what you said, he either went back to get the blades under the water one of the times Atreus said he would like leave for a long time... Or he just brought them with him when he went to Midgard and his wife just knew about them the whole time. Theory expansion?? New theory created??

I hope people see this cuz that line Atreus says is just really important there is foreshadowing in GoW4 like nobody's business. In the intro to the game, Atreus also says, "something feels different..." which is either cuz his mother just died, or cuz the Stranger had entered the forest. Well, there was one part where cory barlog had explained the blades as simply "magic". Like, they are magic and operate on magic. I know they are also tossing that term around here and there when its convenient, but perhaps here it is a legitimate thing? At any rate, i highly doubt kratos would want to travel without weapons. So perhaps he found a means of getting them again, and chose them because they hold such a deep meaning to him? Its very clear kratos doesnt want atreus ever using them. He wants to be the last person using them. He definitely had no intentions of having a child, and probably was going to destroy them himself. But, everything has changed. Even at the end of the game, things are still changing. Mimir even says so.

I think after gow3 when you see the blood trail after the game he recovered somewhere got the blades because he knew how powerful they were/are and somehow made it to Midgard settled his new life. I think it makes more sense that the blades of Athena and the blades of exile were bestowed upon him by a god that is no longer there so they reverted back. The blades of chaos are bestowed upon him by the God of war and now he is a God of war so he cannot escape them unless perhaps he decides to bestow them on to somebody else.
