Anyone who was skeptical of Magma when it first came out and thought that the album wasn't heavy enough and a departure from the Gojira sound is probably walking in shame these days. This album was phenomenal and every single song has been a must to see live at shows.
@Leclwrd
@Leclwrd 4 жыл бұрын
Magma is great for the shows because unlike their other albums there's no (that I can remember) multitracking of the guitars. On the album it won't sound as heavy as From Mars to Sirius where there's 20 guitars mixed to sound heavy as fuck, but live where they only have 2 guitars to work with it really shines.
@AlexpPresley701
@AlexpPresley701 4 жыл бұрын
My personal issue with the album was and still is the sound of drums. It's great by itself, but in the context of Gojira's discography it sounds a bit out of the place. Not as powerful as I'd expect it to be. On the album I hear more heads (plastics) of Mario's drums than their body. Just listen to the intro of Low Lands: we hear sound that is caught by room mics and Mario undoubtedly plays very powerfully as always, he hits hard and his snare makes this rifle-like sound. But then as the song moves on sound-engineer "hides" the body and puts heads on the front, the power is lost, that's why the overall sound of the band is less heavy. We can compare this version of Pray with great sounding drums and album version with Ok (by Gojira standarts and my feeling of the band) drums. The difference is obvious imho. And yeah, Gojira kicks ass🤘One of my all time favourite. Magma isn't soft at all, especially emotional-wise.
@ZippyLeroux
@ZippyLeroux 4 жыл бұрын
@@Leclwrd So you're saying that a) the old Gojira sounded heavy as fuck when performed live despite only two guitars, or you saying b) that Magma sounds just like it does on the album and is consequently heavy as fuck, because it was written for and with, only two guitars?
@ZippyLeroux
@ZippyLeroux 4 жыл бұрын
Are you sure you're not confusing criticisms of L'Enfant Sauvage with this album, cos' those critiques were true imo. But Magma is like The way of all flesh and L'Enfant got drunk, fucked each other, and birthed a beautiful baby boy..... born with cat eyes...... and sharp teeth!

I heard the songs from Magma live before listening to the album (stranded, only pain, the cell and shooting star) I liked them but I didn't think they were as heavy as older songs and the voice was softer too. Hearing them for the first time live with all the lighting effects was phenomenal. When I heard this song I instantly fell in love, well I'm a huge Gojira fan too. This guys are on another level, I even showed a coworker this álbum and he plays it at work (he wasn't a metal head)

EVer since I've heard this live version I can't go back to the studio version. This sounds so much more vibrant and alive. The studio version is still good, but sounds muffled in comparison. Christian is an absolute sweetheart! I got him sign a giant sheet of paper i brought to their performance just to get the band's autographs. He saw me waving with that and a big black marker at the end of the show and asked a safety steward if he could pass on the paper, then signed it. I yelled 'merci Christian' but then he just looked at me confused - probably didn't hear well what i screamed. PRAY *Like the majority of the songs on the album, Pray is about the pain and sadness that both Joe and his brother Mario have gone through as a result of their mother’s passing. Pray is about the desperation one goes through when hoping for something worse to get better, whether it be bad weather, or a close loved one is unwell.* we pray, pray for the light to reign we call, we call the day we rise, pray for the wind to blow we know, we know the way *Their mother is sick during the writing process, and they are praying for her to get better, the light from day, and wind blowing are all symbols of life, its a metaphor for how they are hoping for and praying that their mother gets better.* no faith in your world create my own to thrive *There are multiple double entendres in these lines. Faith could mean religion, or it could mean trust. In the second line, is the protagonist creating a world or faith? And if it’s faith, which definition? Religion or trust? All of these could make sense given the overall theme on the album of dealing with the death of a loved one* no faith in your world create my own to thrive we pray, pray for the light to reign we call, we call the day *Their mother is sick during the writing process, and they are praying for her to get better, the light from day, and wind blowing are all symbols of life, its a metaphor for how they are hoping for and praying that their mother gets better.* no faith in your world create my own to thrive no faith in your world create my own to thrive go, go, go we rise, pray for the wind to blow we know, we know the way *Their mother is sick during the writing process, and they are praying for her to get better, the light from day, and wind blowing are all symbols of life, its a metaphor for how they are hoping for and praying that their mother gets better.*

The energy and raw emotion that is emitted by Gojira is powerful and fierce. Their music, their live performances.. THEM! I am relatively new to them and their music, but I can honestly say no song, album, music genre or band has impacted my life more than Gojira has. From my perspective and philosophy on life to my own approach to writing music.. It’s something special that I hope everyone can experience at some point or another in their life.

I agree. Having grown up around the metal of the 80's, which was good stuff, but always with so many guitar notes involved, I find this style of metal where the guitar lines, not simple, but more minimalistically designed for effect (played perfectly by these guys, as well), enjoyable and more encouraging to me as far as picking up my guitar and playing for a bit. Let the drummer have to remember all the notes.
