​@@antknees I didn't get sleep token until I saw that drumeo interview, I regret to say. It clicked instantly. Gospel chops are all about following the singer which is what II does so beautifully it's crazy. He said probably 90% of the time he's weaving around the vocals. Very odd for a metal drummer, but those linear grooves need to find their way into more metal. So fucking cool.

@@JacobJohnson-sq9kh That's really interesting. I find, I usually play around the vocals or am influenced by it a lot when their are vocals on the track. That's really interesting. I never really noticed that per say about gospel. I just love how high energy it is.

Gospel drummers and bassists have the most INSANE pockets. I've been playing drums for 8 years and I have a pretty tight pocket, but I'm always blown away by gospel musicians. They are on a different level entirely.

Sleep Token are from the UK. Gospel isn’t really a big thing here or at least I wasn’t too familiar with it. But I learned of it through their drummer, II (two). He says that he is inspired by gospel drummers and particularly Eric Moore. Well damn, I need to hear this stuff, if that inspires him. So I have been going down the rabbit hole as a result. The drumming is incredible and I love the playing here. I love finding a new type of music with so much history. Any recommendations from those familiar are well and truly welcomed.

@@azhaz578 I'm sure there are. That's why I said it was probably me. I'm in Scotland, where only about 1.5% of the population is black. That's about 60k people in the whole country. No one here is particularly religious either. Including the few black people I know that are my age.

Amazing job! These two absolutely nailed their version of this song and I found myself listening to this cover far too many times. You can really see how II took inspiration from gospel drummers. From the complex chops, finessed delayed timing (I don't know what else to call it), complex fills and just sitting in the pocket with the bassist.

Don’t ever let being a Christian hinder you, or your taste in music, if you like a band don’t avoid it, I missed a lot of great music growing up because I was scared of what people might think. most don’t care and the few that do usually aren’t worth keeping.
