Hi Shynal! Thanks for the feedback. If you find that your GPA isn't up-to-par with what's needed for PT schools in Canada, I'd try to upgrade some of your marks if you're interested in doing so. With regards to schooling, I really enjoyed my time in physio school. 2 of the best years of my life, without question. Met some great people, learned a lot, and had fun doing so. Overall, great experience.

Hey, great video! You mentioned how someone could have higher set of overall percentages but a lower GPA (Sally & John Demo). Do you think graduate schools take into consideration the percentages as well or just the GPA that’s been calculated by ORPAS?
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent 4 жыл бұрын
Judy Hi there! Thanks for the question. Unfortunately, they do not. That’s (in my opinion) the main pitfalls of GPA. Aside from looking specifically at the grades you received in prereq courses, schools only look at your sub-GPA when reviewing your app. There are, however, a handful that also look at your cum-GPA. Hope that helps!
@MacBabyheartsmakeup
@MacBabyheartsmakeup 4 жыл бұрын
The Canadian Physio Student I agree that is a pitfall but could also be an advantage depending how you work with it 😊 thank you. Also, I was wondering if you knew of any grad students who did a bridge/3rd year direct entry undergraduate degree? (year 1&2 in college then enter university in year 3 with students in your program as well as with other 3rd year students who completed year 1&2 at the university). I’ve contacted a few schools and they said this is acceptable as long as you enough university level courses to create the subGPA but I was wondering how often they actually accept students who obtain a bachelors degree through college & university, rather than just university. I know it’s an odd question but just wanted to ask in case you do know some peers who are in my position.
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent

Judy Definitely! It’s good for some, but detrimental for others. In my class I don’t recall of anyone who did a bridging program like that; however, I have heard of people being admitted who have done that. 👍🏽 Good question!

Hi Tenzing! Thanks for the comment. It's great that you're already thinking ahead for the future at such an early stage. You can start by trying to volunteer in a physiotherapy clinical setting that will help you learn more about the profession, while also giving you exposure to what a PT does on a day-to-day basis. @TheCanadianPhysioStudent
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Souvik! I am not too sure how it converts internationally, so I don't want to give you an inaccurate answer; however, when internationally trained physiotherapists come to Canada, they are required to go through an equivalency process to see if what they learned overseas matches up with our minimal standard of practice. With that said, I assume there'd be a difference from country to country, but I can't say for sure. If I were you, I'd book an appointment with one of your academic counsellors to get the most accurate info!

Hi! Still confused but a little less with this vid. Say I'm at UBC and looking at Western and Alberta. If UBC is column 7 and I have a B in a course, that means I'd put 3.0 in my calculations? Western is column 3 so if my average of GPA course grades end up being 3.0, that means Western would identify my GPA course average as 73-76%? And for Alberta they want a minimum 3.0/4.0 and are in column 7, so they want an average B? Google says a B for a 4.0 scale corresponds to an 83-86% so that doesn't look like the 73-76% on the chart from ORPAS and your video. Help about converting across schools using different columns would be much appreciated! :D Loving your videos, super helpful!
@paulaweinberg7896
@paulaweinberg7896 4 жыл бұрын
in other words, if I were to convert ubc to western; ubc is column 7 and western is 3. I'd convert ubc letter grade courses from column 7 to the GPA 4.0 scale on the far Left, then take my average of those GPA scores, then reconvert that average to column 3?
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Paula! Yeah, each school will have their own method of grading. Some use letter grades, others use %. These values are then converted into a GPA value for each individual mark. So if you are at UBC and got a B in one class, you'd have a 3.0 in that specific class; if you then got an A- in another class, you'd have a 3.7 in that specific class. If you wanted to calculate the average GPA between those two classes, you'd have to add those two together and then divide by the sum (2), which would equal an average GPA of 3.35. Apply this exact logic to all courses you've taken, and that will give you a GPA value that you would use when applying to Western (OMSAS is for Ontario schools). If you want to see the way Alberta would calculate your GPA, I'd recommend using the website I used in the video (whatsmygpa.ca) to calculate your converted GPA, because it has all institutions in Canada. Go under U of A and look at the conversion table (at the bottom of the page) and then apply your UBC marks to their table. Likely the values between your U of A GPA conversion and Western conversion will be similar. Also, I'd refrain from googling GPA on its own, because the results that will come up will be ambiguous and you will likely get results of American values. Glad you like the videos, hope that helps!

Although my cum GPA is 3.8/4.3, my undergrad sub-gpa is only 3.58 and both are from a Chinese university. I already finished my master's from Queen's in Mech with a GPA of 4/4.3 two years ago. Do you think if I apply PT program from Queen's, my master's GPA and my prerequisite course grades will be counted as part of sub GPA? Hi there! Thank you for this video it was really helpful as I am applying this year and I am currently in my 4th year at UofT! I had a question about calculating my sub-GPA. In third year second semester, I took four courses (I assigned a pass/credit to one of them) so that means for that year, I had 9 credits, what does this mean? Where will that extra grade to fill in that spot come from? Secondly, the summer in between second and third year, I took 2 courses, will these grades count at all towards the sub-GPA? Or will they just be ignored? I also took one course in the summer before I started by fourth year, will that grade be included or just ignored? I ask this because compared to my third and fourth year, my second year grades were not as good so I'm really hoping there is some way that that year's GPA doesn't get included. Thank you! I subbed!
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Hiba! Thanks for your comment. I appreciate you watching the video and subscribing to my channel. With regards to your questions... So this is how it'll work for you: - The course you took in between 3rd and 4th year (summer) will fill in that final credit of your 3rd year to make up for that pass/credit - The courses you took in between 2nd year and 3rd year (summer) will be added to your entire 2nd year GPA calculation - Because you're applying in 4th year, your second semester 4th year marks will not be taken into consideration, and therefore, the avg of your entire 2nd year will be used to fill in those gaps (as described in my video above) Hope that clears things up! If you're looking for more helpful resources on PT school apps, check out my website PhysioSchool.ca. Thanks again for watching!

Hey Kyle! Thanks for the question. These grades will be calculated the exact same way. If you take them in your last couple years of undergrad, they will be factored in to the calculation of your 20 most recent courses (as seen @ 7:00 in the video). However, during my summer in between my 3rd and 4th year I took 2 courses. From my understanding, if we were to go back on the most recent 20 courses, my 18th, 19th, and 20th course would land in between my 3rd year Fall term. Harley Wilson Hi Harley! Thanks for your question. So correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that in the U.K., you have the option of either doing a Bachelor's PT degree right out of high school, or a Master's PT degree after undergrad. In Canada it's a bit different. The degree used to be like yours where you could do a Bachelor's right out of high school; however, in the early 2000's (2003 I think?), they changed it so that it's exclusively a Master of Science in Physiotherapy degree. With that said, having an undergraduate degree prior to attending physiotherapy school in Canada is mandatory. All in all, it is a 6-year process. For your reference: I did a 4-year Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada. I graduated in 2017 and was admitted to PT school in my 4th year. I started PT school September 2017 at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada and I just graduated this year (Class of 2019). Hope this helps!

I’m confused. I have 2 undergrad courses outside of an undergrad degree, meaning I took them in graduate school and 2 graduate level courses which Mcmaster and UofT will accept. Do you know how extra courses are calculated in? Will they still use my full 3rd and 4th year undergrad averages? From reading and watching your video it’s seems like they will average courses during graduate school, then 4th year, and then if they have to dip into 3rd year to get 20courses, they will then use the entire 3rd year average for remaining course “slots”? Hopefully that makes sense.
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kelly, thanks for the comment. I understand that there are a variety of scenarios that will play out when it comes to students applying to PT school in Canada; however, for the purpose of this video I walked through an example of the most common scenario, which is undergrads applying within their 4th year. That being said, the same principles apply. Here's a direct excerpt from U of T's website in the FAQs section that will be able to answer your query above: We will consider your last 20 half-courses completed by December 31 of the application year, starting with the fall session of your current academic year and working backward. Due to the discrepancy in grade reporting across universities, in order to capture 20 half-courses, the sub-GPA must be calculated based on yearly versus term marks. Thus, where grades must be extracted from a year to achieve the equivalent of 20 half courses, the average of that entire year (including both the fall and winter terms) will be used. All calculations are based on the Undergraduate Grading System Conversion Table provided by ORPAS. www.physicaltherapy.utoronto.ca/admissions/faqs/ I hope this helps out :)

Hey Amira! Yes, you're exactly right. They take the entire second year, calculate the average GPA of that year, and use it to fill the remaining slots. I understand your confusion, because they say they take your "most recent 20 courses", but really, they only take your 15 most recent courses (3rd and half of 4th year assuming you took a full course load) and then use the average of the second year to fill in the outstanding 5 slots. Haneen Hi there! Thanks for the question. When applying to PT school, your most recent 20 half credits (i.e., most recent 10 courses) are taken into consideration when calculating your GPA. That said, a full course load is not mandatory. There's many people who don't think their GPA is adequate when they apply, so they go back to pick up a few courses in order to bump up their GPA, and this would not technically be considered a full course load, but it is permissible when applying. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other q's or if you need clarification. Thanks again for watching and subscribing. 😄

Also, to add to that, my suggestion would be to take a full course load for a couple reasons: 1) Most likely better for your degree requirements and will help you graduate on time. 2) It will help prepare you for PT school better; during my first semester of PT school I had 7 courses to juggle, which is the reality of it. Definitely challenging regardless, but imo, it makes you more prepared for that.

Hi there! Thanks for the question. I don't know the exact process, but you can find more information about credentialing in Canada at the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators website: www.alliancept.org/considering-canada/ Hope this helps!

Hi do you have an idea of the gpa needed for Uottawa?

Hi! Ottawa (like many schools) does not publicly post their GPA cut-off. However, the highest cut-offs in recent years have hovered around 3.81-3.82/4.0. My judgment tells me that Ottawa is around that value or lower. I know a student who got in last application cycle with a 3.82/4.0. Hope that helps.

@@TheCanadianPhysioStudent thank you. And this was for cumulative GPA or sub GPA for your friends. In their calculations im sitting at sgpa 3.79/4.0 so not enough damn..
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent 3 жыл бұрын
@@67kevyboy That does necessarily mean that 3.79 is not enough. The value I mentioned above is the highest for some PT schools but not all. Ottawa’s cut off may be in 3.7’s, but they just don’t release it publicly.

I'm a second-year student majoring in occupational therapy at a Japanese university. Is it possible for me to get into a grad school in Canda and major in physical therapy with a 3.4 GPA out of 4.0?
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent 3 жыл бұрын
3.4/4.0 unfortunately will not cut it for Canadian PT schools. You need at least above a 3.7/4.0 for most schools. The highest cut-offs are usually around 3.81/4.0.

@@TheCanadianPhysioStudent If your GPA is over the cutoff but not enough to be competitive are you able to take courses to boost your GPA? I graduated last December (McMaster University) but I have realized my grades are just barely over the cutoff. I am planning on going back to get two of the pre-requisites I am missing that are needed by most universities but I am not sure if it is a waste of time if I can't increase my GPA. I am aware that the prereq courses don't count toward the gpa the universities evaluate on.

@@mrnijacatzz Hey! Good question. Yes, you can go back to boost your GPA; many people do it, so definitely not a waste of time. That being said, if you take prerequisite courses within your most recent 20 credits, it actually will be counted towards your sub-GPA. If you took a prerequisite in 1st year (for example), then it wouldn't be counted. Therefore, the 2 prerequisite courses that you'd take in your GPA booster year would be counted towards your sub-GPA. Hope that helps.

Hi! I’m a current uOttawa biology student very interested in pursuing physiotherapy. I have a question, however. I’ve been a part time student since I started in 2017 (meaning that I’ve only ever taken 4 classes per semester). Therefore, I’m currently in my 4th year (of 5). Which courses should I include in my GPA calculation if I plan on applying next January (2022)? Thank you!
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent
@TheCanadianPhysioStudent 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rose! Thanks for watching. For your situation, you'd take all grades from 5th and 4th year (16 courses) and would calculate them the exact same way I did for my 4th and 3rd year grades in the video above. You'd then fill in the final 4 courses with average of your entire 3rd year (exactly how I did for my 2nd year courses in the above video). Hope that helps.

Hi Anthony, Thanks for the video! I'm currently applying in my 4th year and I have 3 half credit courses this semester to use since the other 2 are full year courses so they won't be used in my sub-GPA. So counting back to third year I would end up with 13 credits total leaving me with 7 * 0.5 half credits or 3.5 full year courses remaining. Based on the video and OPRAS, they would use the average of my year two and have that mark fill as the remaining 6.5 half credits or 3.5 full year marks. Would they calculate the average first and convert that mark on a 4.0 scale or convert each grade that year into a 4.0 scale and calculate the average? I'm also wondering whatever mark I end up with for year 2, do I enter it on "whatsmyGPA" as "Grade" "6.5 Credits". Also If I took 2 spring courses prior to the start of my year 2 (2019), would that be used into my average even if I took a full course load that year (10 credits)? Thank you for all the videos!

@@ttran5358 The spring courses prior to your 2nd year will not be grouped in with your 2nd year courses. If you had taken them between 2nd and 3rd year, then that would be a different story. Hope that helps out!
