I was at the September 8 show. Was my 18th birthday and was there with a large group of friends. Just a magical time, despite all the bad politics going on at the time. The Dead and all that great music got us through.

I was ten years old and about ten miles from the Dead when they made this music, growing up on Long Island. I had four years before being introduced to the Dead, and that's when everything changed. The Nassau Coliseum became my home when the Dead were there. I followed them up and down much of the east coast, until '86 when I got clean and sober and had to stay away from the scene for a bit. Last shows were in March 1986 at Hampton Coliseum in Va. Such great memories.

They rehearsed on stage. Unreal. Fearless musical warriors. The mistakes are somehow epic musical masterpieces. You know, & I know, they're the best band ever.

Mnd blowing part. I'm not a guitarist, but I know enough to appreciate what Jerry's doing there. I love the Dead but don't like to call them a jazz band. Nonetheless, that's the closest I've ever heard them come to Be-Bop Jazz improvizing perfection.

08:06 This chord right here is what separates the Grateful Dead from all the lazy jam bands. Anybody can do a two-cord jam but having a signaled transition into a different key, and that tense sound of danger in the progression, that is golden vintage Grateful Dead

This is the best one, folks - at least pre-hiatus when Eyes had that extra special magic and the fully structured jam sequence. Garcia has it by the balls all the way through here. Only time they truly nailed the diminished arpeggio climax in the jam - what a monumental moment. Would it be too much to ask for the wizards to give us a better mix now that is been officially released? The whole damn show is a good candidate to put out btw. This is the debut of Wolf with the Dead, FYI - JG used it (him?) for the first time a few days earlier, 9/3 I think, in tat JGB show on the boat, whatever thats known as..
@rm11337 жыл бұрын
The BEST ever is a mighty bold statement, especially since we're talking about such a great song. I wouldn't go that far but totally accept your opinion as all of this is subjective anyway. I am partial to 9/3/77 Englishtown, 6/18/74, 8/6/74 and 3/29/90 with Branford. I will say this is one of the most underrated versions out there because I don't think it is held in such high esteem as some of the others. Any way you slice it, it sure is wonderful listening.

I for one love Phil Leshs playing, he wasn’t a pocket player he was a lyrical bass player who wove lines around the guitars. Very unique and distinct style. A pocket standard bass player wouldn’t have been nearly as a contributor to the Dead’s sound

@@KhalDrogo76 Yes! He added to that tension we love. It was like beautiful chaos! This is a comment that I wrote yesterday about winterland 78 samson and Delilah....... "Phil too! Now I can hear it between the 3. The way they create syncopated rhythms is insane. The amount of tension that built up by the whole band actually makes me laugh out loud around 7:35. It feels like they are tickling my brain!"
