Her harsh vocals come from the vestibular vocal folds, not the true vocal cords. It's a technique that allows for this kind of singing without damage of any kind. The Charismatic Voice did a video with Will Ramos where they put a camera down his throat while he did different harsh vocals, the mechanics of it are WAY different than singing in a clean tone.

Welcome to Jinjer. Tatiana is a vocal goddess and the band's musicianship is second to none. They are from Ukraine. English is actually their third language. The emeralds being ripped away are the scales of the fish (Pisces) on the cutting board of the handsome butchers. Have the lyrics handy, Tatiana was a literature major in university and she writes great lyrics. I highly recommend either "Perennial" live at Wacken or "Teacher, Teacher" (OMV) for a follow up. Great reaction (Subbed)

Yep yep yep, the emeralds are the "scale armor" of the Pisces fish. My theory is that's what's tattooed on her left upper arm. I don't think it's necessarily a love song, but I do think when she says "Searching for a hook to catch on and see the sunbeam" she's expressing the desire that someone would rescue her from swimming all her life against the stream of being alone. She did get married a couple years ago.

I'd suggest "Home Back" too, due to how (more) significant it became a year and a half ago. It was an anti war protest for what was happening in their home city of Donetsk, where putin endorsed separatist movement made them leave in 2014. Not long after that single was released, as we know, the song became relevant to their whole country. Last year they released t-shirts based on that song, with their logo painted with blue-yellow, to raise funds for aid to people on bomb shelters (Kiev was still under siege back then). And I'm a proud owner of one of those shirts who already fulfilled the purpose of a band t-shirt: attend one of their concerts wearing it, and no words to describe how great they are on stage, specially Tatiana!

She’s not doing any damage to her vocal chords, none! Her growl comes from the “false folds” above her actual vocal chords. Her “true voice” is lovely & will continue to be so, her growl is awesome & she’ll be able to do it for as long as she chooses to do it, no damage, pure talent!

It's a song about the duality inside of us, inside of her own self. The positive and the negative, the balanced part and the unhinged, suffering part, the part that gets us to do our best and the aspects of our personality that betray us. The imagery of the lyrics is very metaphorical, Pisces (the fishes) being an astrological sign of duality.
@j.f.fisher5318
@j.f.fisher5318 Жыл бұрын
I'd add also between her lonliness and desire for connection, introverted fear of intimacy, and the times she's been taken advantage emotionally by guys she's tried to connect with. This was before she met Alex Lopez and got married. She seems a lot more confident and grounded these days so hats off to him.
@manasync
@manasync Жыл бұрын
This song has a lot of layers to the duality metaphor. The juxtaposition of her vocals, the difference in the way the instruments are distorted in the different sections, I'm pretty sure the time signature changes as well. It might be reaching, but the fact that her outfit is opposite colors I'm sure was a thematic choice. There's also the theme of naivette compared to the harsh reality, reflected in her vocals. Love love love this song

Jinjer is the name of the band. They are from the Ukraine. The singers name is Tatiana. There is no effect on her voice she is doing it all by herself. The pedal Roman the gitarrist is pushing is for changing the tone of the guitar. Maybe you should watch Perennial live at Wacken or the one take vocal performance of Judgement & Punishment next to convince yourself.

Jinjer is an incredibly talented band. Tatiana does not use effects, those are her true vocals. She's highly skilled and trained to do that in a healthy way. Saw Jinjer live last month and can say without a doubt she is a beast...super consistent and amazing on every song. Check out Teacher, Teacher; Perennial; Vortex; or the live tracking of Judgement and Punishment. The pedal you saw was for the guitar, changes the sound from the clean/reverb in the verse to the heavier distortion for the chorus.

Check out all their music best musicianship I’ve seen and some of the best lyrics. Eugene the bass player has bass play throughs which I’m sure you’d enjoy. That button that was press was a guitar pedal to go from clean atmospheric tones to distortion. There’s videos of Tatiana without a microphone which sounds even better than the recordings.

Re vocal effects: not effects as such but there is a lot of editing on this piece, including layering her cleans and also layering her mid-range and low growls which makes it a bit more shocking. They were a little-known band when they released this and nobody expected this piece to be under as much of a microscope it ended up being. Since this they don't edit her growls but will sometimes layer in cleans. For my part I love all aspects of her voice so much I just always prefer it in its rawest purest form, but on the studio stuff I guess their production team has to earn their pay heh. From my perspective there are two ways masculinity can respond to such ostentatious feminine power: to be intimidated or to get stronger. Just saying. ;) Completely unrelated, Eugene the bassist earned silver at the Abu Dhabi qualifying tournament in Kyiv a few years back. :D All of them have ridiculously diverse musical influences. For the guys there's lots of jazz and blues influences. Vlad their drummer is the only one with classical training (as a pianist) as he was from the more affluent west of Ukraine while the other three were from a coal mining town in the Donbass but had to leave their homes behind to contine their careers after the 2014 war. Tati's influences also extend to reggae and rap and she frequently uses rap cadences in her growls and occasionally in her cleans as well. Recommended next steps: Teacher Teacher official - we mostly recommend concert videos but there isn't a definitive live video for Teacher Teacher and the omv is so good it's a fan favorite that's stood the test of time, with more hip hop influence in Tatiana's performance thsn most. The live from Melbourne is goid for watching Tati do the insane switching in the beginning live, but Eugene's bass is too low in the mix so the BrBrDENG bits at the end are disappointingly weak. Perennial live at Wacken. The omv is _gorgeous_ but the charisma and technical skill on display in the Wacken video (it's German so you'll get points for pronouncing it "Vahken") has completely eclipsed the omv - well worth at least watching the omv and some have done double features with both versions, just saying. ;) Who Is Gonna Be The One - very raw but high quality audio recording of a show at a small Ukrainian festival called Atlas Weekend (if you want to find the non-video track - it's very differentfrom the original studio recoding, long story). I feel like anyone preparing to play a female superhero should watch it. Daily. It's 80% growls though so I highly recommend reading the lyrics first. It's one of their most Rage Against The Machine -style protest songs. (You've heard RATM, right? If not do Kiiling In The Name, preferably the live video with 84M views) Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev (now Kyiv) one of their most musically and visually stunning videos. Don't do it next though, save it for later. Home Back official: incredibly powerful anti-war song. Based on their experiences and the shock and confusion they felt when their hometown in eastern Ukraine was caught in the 2014 war that set the stage for the 2022 invasion. Not enough anti war media is told from the eyes of ordinary people caught in a war through their own authentic work rather than through some other platform's agenda. It speaks powerfully to the experiences of the millions of ordinary people caught in every war. Brutal and heartbreacking song brought to life through the superb work of a production team in Kyiv in 2020. Subbed. Cheers!

This song is about duality at its core, more or less, hence the drastic switch-up. The Pisces sign is two fish, swimming in balance - one light and one dark, life and death. She's talking about the opposing traits that exist within her - how she likes people, but avoids getting too close, because she's fragile and skittish. How she has scaled armor to protect her, but when she actually lets down her walls to trust people, she gets destroyed. A truly amazing song!

Teddy, I've been following your journey since Falling in Reverse - Watch the World Burn and hoped from the start that you would get to Jinjer. Your open minded approach to discovering the heavier genres is so refreshing and wholesome, thanks for that! Tatiana is doing this in a healthy way, but yes, it does take training and conditioning. For more information on the techniques used for harsh vocals I'd say go check out the video "the Charismatic Voice" did with Will Ramos when they stuck a camera down his nose and into his throat, but I think you should react to "Lorna Shore - To the Hellfire" before you look at what goes on while he is doing vocals (Will is the vocalist for Lorna Shore). Not entirely sure you are ready for Lorna yet, however, as already mentioned, your approach is commendable and you might just enjoy it! Jinjer is amazing, they are a Ukrainian band and they are equally epic to see live. Definitely check out their live performance of "Perennial" at Wacken Open Air 2019, it is mindblowing what she pulls off on the last song of a set! As for this one, Pisces is the zodiac sign of the two fish, all about duality, which is seen in the highly contrasting parts of the song itself, but further explored in the lyrics. The initial harsh vocals are: Scale armour belies Virgin innocence One being brings life Another runs for death I won't get into the entire rabbit hole of the lyrics (this comment is long enough as it is 😅), but seeing as you asked specifically about the emeralds being ripped away, that's a reference to scaling a fish, but of course also metaphorical.
@ericpeterson7512
@ericpeterson7512 Жыл бұрын
It's a point of friendly disagreement whether she says "belies" or "blaze" after scale armor. The lyrics read "blaze" and that's what Tatiana says it is. Some folks think "belies" makes more sense. I disagree. She sings it as two syllables "buh-laze," and I think that's partly why some believe it's "belies." Either one kinda works lyrically, but blaze makes perfect poetic sense to me. Also, note in their live show, on the vertical screens behind them the imagery of greenish fish scales appears as the song goes into the chorus--then the scales blaze orange. Someone should ask her that question at a meet n' greet and post it on the video for us! 😉 Interestingly, I saw recent concert footage where Tatiana says "I hope you got the joke, huh?" after she sings "Cause I'm selfless."

They are all some variation of rock/metal. Avenged Sevenfold - Critical Acclaim (Live in the LBC, it's the first song of the concert). Also, when others inevitably suggest that you react to A Little Piece of Heaven in the future, listen to at least 10 of their other songs before doing that one. Trust me. Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (Live at Wacken 2013) Metallica - Fade to Black Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird Within Temptation - Ice Queen That's a good start. All different styles, and within the bands themselves they change styles a lot too.

I love the duality of her voice. It’s so damn powerful. I have a band recommendation that is no way close to Jinjer but I have the feeling you might appreciate their talent: Tool. You could literally start anywhere, but “The Pot” has been regarded as the most digestible of their songs. A close second would be “Schism” or “Forty Six & 2.” If you have the patience for long pieces and like killer transitions, you’ll love them. But make sure to avoid their music videos because they will distract from the musicAl experience. Happy reacting! I love your channel!

Slava Ukraini and their awesome metal export Jinjer! You have evidently been living under a musical rock if you haven't seen people play guitar much. GET UP! Dust yourself off and go stand on the musical mountain surveying all the great musical genres out there! From Rock to Metal to Country to Jazz. So much great stuff for you to experience and enjoy!

You should do some Opeth, one of the bands being an inspiration for this one. From soft to hard, I can recommend 'Era' (video), Harlequin Forest (live), and 'Deliverance' (studio recording).

The song itself is about the duality of the Pisces nature. Hence the name of the song. Tatiana is amazing. I hope you get to do more of Jinjer!

People like you discovering Jinjer and not being basically metal fans generally keep on with Perennial (live in Wacken 2019) then "Teacher Teacher" (live MOV). After that, it goes on with "Who's gonna be the one ?" live, "Pit of consciousness" live in Kyiv, "On the top (MOV or live in Kyiv) and so forth. This band has amazing videos, but tend to be even better live. Enjoy !

Its not an effect on her voice, but you are correct you DID hear a foot pedal tap ... its the distortion pedal for the guitarist. If you listen again you will notice that the sound of the guitar also completely changes every time the vocals change. And shes not hurting herself at all, althoigh she probably did when she was first learning to growl like that. Metal growling is actually closer to coughing than to actually screaming, it uses a different set of muscles, but when you are training the muscles up it is not uncommon to accidentally make yourself hoarse a few times just like you would be hoarse if you had strep throat and were coughing too much.

For those wondering about the screamed lyrics: "Scale armour belies, Virgin innocence. One being brings life, Another runs for death." And then: "Pisces swimming through the river, All her life against the stream, Searching for a hook to catch on, And see the sunbeam. Then suffocate in painful tortures, On cutting tables of callous men, Under a knife of handsome butchers, Emeralds are ripped away" So the song is about literally being a Pisces. Being loving and creative and low on ego, but also being sensitive and vulnerable to being hurt. So she's not a lion, she's a fish. The emeralds are fish scales (her armour) Hence the vocal change, it's about the duality. Two fish swimming in opposite directions. I'm not into astrology, which makes it annoying how well Pisces (my sign) represents me, and how hard I relate to this song.

Jinjer is a ukrainian metal core band. So english is their third language after russian and ukrainian. The song is about the zodiac sign pisces and its double nature, being evasive and skiddish on one side and want to go deep and experience all on the other. Three band members are pisces including the vocalist Tatiana and the bassist Eugene who wrote the lyrics as I understand.

The song regularly causes shortness of breath and a racing heart in those who react. It was Jinjer's international breakthrough. The song is slightly edited and lies between live and studio. The voice is more brutal live. When she growls, she uses the fake vocal cords, which are in front of the real ones. You got the idea behind it well: sound like a lion or a demon. The voice takes on a similar function to a distorted guitar. Welcome to the world of metal. The Lioness Queen: ARCH ENEMY - NEMESIS (LIVE IN TOKYO!) The song is only half as long as the video. You can stop the video when they leave the stage. In order not to stay in the metal cliché, I'm sending a Valkyre here. The song with the most reaction videos. Unfortunately there are two versions with the same name: NIGHTWISH - Ghost Love Score (OFFICIAL LIVE) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIrNep9-jKd0jNE

Haha your reaction is a lot like my original reaction. Like WHAT!? I was whooping and running around the room in disbelief too. I think I had always wanted to like harsh vocals, but I never had. It's the contrast here that makes Tatiana so special. And this song is all about contrast and duality. One being brings life, another runs for DEATH! And yeah, the way she roars on "death" would send a lion running. She's a predatory beast on the hunt. One of the many crazy things about this band is how quiet, reserved and downright shy Tatiana is off the stage. It's her mild-mannered alter ego. When she steps on the stage it's a total transformation into the superhero rock goddess I call Captain Metal. Sorta like Marvel's Captain Marvel--but metal!! She is scary awesome on stage. She dominates like few can. Personally, I love seeing women in traditionally male roles like this. It's empowering and righteous. This proves the old line "Anything you can do, I can do better." You won't find any guy who can do this any better than Tatiana. She's the real deal. The Queen of Metal. Vlad, Roman and Eugene are pretty regal themselves. Metal royalty.

"Scaled armor blaze virgin innocence, one being brings life, the other runs for death"...My favorite Jinjer songs, Perennial live at Wacken, Outlander, from the early days of the band, I speak astronomy, at age 58 I went to my first metal show to see Jinjer, Space of variations (another great ukrainian band ), and POD. I was blown away. it is never too late to discover all the great genres of music..including metal, classic rock, grunge, etc, etc. If you get to the oldies please do Tobacco Road by the Winters brothers and Inside Looking Out by Grand Funk Railroad1969(..classic blues and blues based guitar driven rock...the grandfather of the heavy stuff!!)

Actually, it takes very little to no suffering if it's done right. It does take a lot of training, because most people rarely (consciously) use the false cords, but when done right, it doesn't hurt or strain the voice at all. It's also not as loud as most people think - if you watch most extreme metal singers, they stay very close to the mic while screaming or growling, because it is hardly louder than normal singing. I always love first reactions to this, because while there are a few very impressive female extreme metal singers (check out Angela Gossow's work with Arch Enemy for reference), Tatjana's mixture of angelic clear vocals and very strong (and versatile!) harsh vocals always blows everybody away!

Tatiana is proof that chicks can do harsh vocals just as well as guys can. Once you learn proper techniques and such, almost anyone can do it. There are videos all over YT that show how to do this. Someone else mentioned The Charasmatic Voice and Will Ramos of Lorna Shore and their "throat cam" vid, but they have also done a harsh vocals coarse with Chris Liepe where they go over ways to not only safely do screams like this, but how to achieve various vocal affects (Gutturals, tunnel screams, and the like).

English is not her first language, but Tatiana is a fantasttic lyricist who uses lots of metaphorical imagery in her lyrics. In this she is singing as a pisces using fish metaphors to describe her feelings. The final bit she says: Pisces swimming, through the river, all her life against the stream. Searching for a hook to catch on and see a sunbeam. Then suffering through painful tortures, on cutting tables of callous men. Under the knife of handsome butchers, emeralds are ripped away, emeralds are ripped away, EMERALDS ARE RIPPED AWAY. the common thought is it is a reference to losing your defenses/walls in a relationship like a fish being descaled by a fisherman/butcher

No damage done. No vocal cords used. All false chord singing (in the harsh vocals). Ukrainian (maybe some Russian) is their FIRST language but the speak English well, especially Tatiana. "Scale armor blaze, virgin innocents, one being brings life, another runs for death" Yes, it was "emeralds are ripped away" at the end. Emeralds as in fish scales. The fish was upon a handsome butchers table. As pisces is, the song is about duality.
