Fantaaastic reaction. I often see people mock the singing and getting undressed on the boat scene but you absolutely got it immediately that it was a ceremonial procedure laying down the weapons and armor getting ready for the realm of eternal peace. I really lked your reaction!

The Lord of the Rings is, at heart, a story about a journey, and The Rings of Power’s journey has only just begun. And the thing about journeys is that they often have a way of getting better after a rocky start - which may yet prove to be the case with this show.

There are some people who already "knew" they hated the show even before it came out. And nothing will convince them otherwise. Some people just love to hate and feed on that hate and the elief that they are "right". And some sad Yotube channels cynically feed of that feeble hatredness. Me, I loved this. Frankly I don't give a shit whether it's accurate to the Silmarillion or not. I just great characters, angst, drama, great visuals, that Middle Earth feel and a fun time.

@@redcardinalist Great characters? You mean Galadriel which we are supposed to like and root for? In the show she is is rude, selfish and arrogant. No wounder her whole crew left her. What drama? You mean the drama that they created that everyone is dumb and incompetent expect for Galadriel. The show is setting up for an ending where when shit hits the fan, Galadriel can arrogantly say to everyone "i told you so". That is poor writing.

Wait, Kyle, you 've read the books multiple times(including the Silmarillion) and still enjoyed The Hobbit movies?! My man... glad to see a like minded fan with the same attitude about this material we both obviously love and care about. The Hobbit films were not my favorite nor would I say they're in my top 10 or even 15-20 Fantasy/Sci-Fi media. But I still had a good time watching them nonetheless. We are spoiled and I will take anything any of the big budgets want to throw at us. Bringing the material to life is a blessing. Just as long as they never adapt a Tolkien work that resembles the Dragon Ball Z live action, I'll be happy. I was suggested to give your channel a look after running verbal circles around the illogical haters in the comments of another reactor who enjoyed the show so far, and now I see why. Cheers to you and yours mate, subscribed ;)

Am I the only one who thinks that Galadriel chose the false light? That she chose to stay in order to know true darkness, and that's why she waited a whole age before traveling to Valinor? So far, I'm loving this show. Part of it is because I'm seeing a line start to form between this battle-hardened driven Galadriel to the wise Lady of the Forest; one who would be tempted to wield the weapon of the enemy against him but tempered with time to know better.

4:51: More like he and Beren stormed Sauron’s castle Tol-in-Gaurhoth. Finrod fought sauron in a battle of bands that ended in his demise. Beren and Finrod were lost in Sauron’s dungeon. Finrod died killing a werewolf but Luthien arrived in time to save Beren. Fun fact: Finrod was the best elf friend men had. The ring Aragorn wears, the ring of barahir, was a gift Finrod gifted to Barahir, and it passed on to Beren and later to Aragorn

That curtain that opened for the ship was the wall of enchantment that was set in place by the Valar after men of Numenor rebelled and tried to take the undying lands by force...it is called the Sea of Enchantment.......and caused all not permitted to find the path to wander and grow weary of their travels and turn back to Middle Earth.....man is mortal to where elves are immortal....and it is not permitted for the living to step upon the undying lands.... for it was not permitted by the Valar to with hold the gift given to men....and that was to die and leave the world . To where elves are forever doomed to abide on Arda until the end, for they are made of the same substances . A little drawn out...but you get the idea...LOL

I think that we are really coming into a stage of maturity for CGI. We can render a lot of things really well, we are not enamored with the tech to the point of doing things with it which it should not be doing, and we know that we should and how to blend practical effects with CGI. It really feels like film-making is unlimited now, and can look good throughout.

12:17: Yes, it goes far back. In the first age, Feanor and his sons committed treason against the Valar when they left Valinor, and committed crimes like the kinslaying. Since then the leader of the Valar, Manwe sealed Amman off from Feanor and the others who left. They wouldn’t be allowed to return until far later: if Im not mistaken, the end of the War of Wrath when Morgoth was finally defeated, Beleriand sunk to the bottom of the sea and the world was reshaped.

Sauron also started out as a Maiar, though of higher order than the Maiar who became the Wizards. The order of higher beings go: Eru (the creator/god) Who created the Ainur (angels) The Valar were the first Ainur; the 9 Rulers (like archangels) and sang Arda (the Earth) into existence. Melkor was a valar who brought discord to the song and thus evil into the world and he got renamed Morgoth. The Maiar were lesser Ainur (like normal angels) servants of the Valar. Sauron was a very early Maia who was around for the creation, but he joined Morgoth and became his lieutenant. Olórin was the wisest of the Maiar and in direct service to Eru Ilúvatar and guardian of the creator's secret fire. He reluctantly joined the Istari going to Middle-Earth to help in the fight against Sauron. We know Olórin as Gandalf. A female Maia named Melian fell in love with the Elven King and bore his children. Descendants of this marriage include Elrond and Elendil, thus also Arwen and Aragorn. Melian was mother of Lúthien, who was the grandmother of Elwing (wife of Eärendil), who in turn was the mother of Elrond who is Arwen's father. So Arwen's great-great-great grandmother on her father's side was a Maia (which in essence makes Gandalf a cousin of Arwen). Galadriel happens to be Arwen's grandmother on her mother's side, mother of Elrond's wife Celebrian. Aragorn is a direct descendant of Arwen's uncle Elros (Elrond's brother), though there are 64-69 generations of long lived kings and chieftains between Aragorn and Elros.

To clarify, the two blue wizards come in the second age during this time. Gandalf, Radagast, and Saruman come at the start of the third age. Upon watching ep2 you'll see some very important clues, but just to say I'd bet a crisp $20 bill that it's one of the two blue wizards, most likely Alatar.

Ignoring all the genuine criticisms and valid opinions and writing everyone off as "review bombers" is childish and insincere. There's plenty wrong with the series, not just the progressive diversity but plot, character development and inconsistency are the biggest issues, the acting is passable but the dialogue is cheap and downright derivative at times, the second age of Middle-Earth is an entire different beast from the third age and yet this show keeps throwing in member berries from the Peter Jackson trilogy regardless of continuity or remaining faithful to Tolkien's works, this series is an insult to the late author and the fact that people defend mediocrity is insane, Tolkien would hate this series and he's rolling in his grave.

@Patrick FF Some of this is the reactionary backlash accompanying any modern project with female characters or characters of color, and showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne are candid about how little they care for such complaints. Some of this reflects a conservatism in the fandom, with anger reported at the hiring of an intimacy coordinator. Other complaints concern the art of adaptation, especially changes made to the source material’s chronology. Some people just don’t like the title. The release of all this publicity material in a concentrated period brought all of these complaints bubbling back to the surface, especially for anybody who uses social media. Of course, it’s worth stressing that the internet is not real life. If it were, Snakes on a Plane would have been a blockbuster success and nobody would have gone to see Avatar. There’s a tendency to assume that the volume and intensity of online discourse translates to the real world in a way that isn’t true. It seems likely that most people who saw the title The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, or saw the screenshots last week, or happened upon the trailer during the Super Bowl just thought that it was cool that Amazon is making a Lord of the Rings television series, and they then continued about their business. There’s a tendency to overinflate the importance of fans to the success of projects like this, at the expense of the more relaxed mainstream audience. Of course, fans of J.R.R. Tolkien have historically been a very traditionalist and conservative group. This makes a certain amount of sense, given that The Lord of the Rings is a story that is (at least in part) about trying to conjure the memory of a lost and idealized past. Peter Jackson’s trilogy might be beloved by mainstream audiences, but it faced an uphill battle trying to appeal to a hardcore fandom that seemed almost resentful of the novels being adapted at all. “People are going to look at it now, and they’re going to think we share something in common,” said Ted Tschopp, co-founder of TolkienOnline.com, in December 2001. “If the movie fails, I’ll have a sense of relief. It’s selfish, I know, but I’ll have a snobbish attitude of, ‘Thank goodness, I can still enjoy my books.’” On the release of The Fellowship of the Ring, some fans groused at Jackson’s decision to bulk up the roles of female characters, and others complained Jackson was “raping the text.” link: www.escapistmagazine.com/why-are-people-so-angry-about-the-rings-of-power/

They did better than I expected with this. It's kind of hard to keep a balance though. They are throwing in a lot of easter eggs which is nice, but you have to know the lore to fully appreciate them. If you know the lore you have to overlook inconsistencies like events happening out of order, people who lived thousands of years apart interacting, important characters behaving uncharacteristically, etc. If you don't know the lore there are a lot of pretty visuals but also a lot of important background is left out so you don't fully appreciate why things are the way they are. I feel like they made this for people who watched the movies and liked them but aren't really into Tolkien. Which is fine as far as it goes, but like any other fandom you are going to drive the lore fanatics up the wall. Given how huge the Tolkien fandom is and how much depth and detail Tolkien put into his world they should have anticipated massive amounts of criticism at even the hint of change. It doesn't help that the showrunners have worked with and much admire Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who in the view of many fans of both franchises have trashed both Star Trek and Star Wars.

The Appendix tells us that Galadriel's brother is 'Finrod Felagund, Friend-of-Men, once king of Naragothrond, who gave his life to save Beren son of Barahir'. The prologue does not even give us his _name_ , let alone this sentence of back story. One of many missed opportunities to give some much-needed depth to Galadriel's otherwise one-note character and motivation.

As for your shallow passing analysis of Galadriel, uhhh she's just like the books buddy. Proud, strong, and self-willed. Also, stoic and dealing with the trauma of the loss of her bro. Yes, elves do that sadness thing ya know, being immortal and all and still adjusting to death. What did expect? If you want we can even look at the movie adaptation. Save for the gift giving moment and the extended addition where Frodo uses a vision to snap back into the moment.... She was stoic and serene. Again, what do you haters want ? A boisterous merry making dwarf/hobbit esque woman? Do YOU know what Galadriels demeanor is supposed to be like? All signs say no, friend. "Smile more honey." 29:39 actually that was the forces of Morgoth. It's a bit confusing cause they didn't go over alot in that prologue lol but that was the First dark Lord, who Sauron served . That was all First Age and the times before, Years of the Trees etc . Lot of cool stuff happens there. Morgoth is the reason all evil exist . Practically Tolkien's Satan. He created the Dragons, orcs , trolls, Balrogs ( that's right there's a lot more than 1 Balrog lol not too many . About a small group of em that acted as Morgoths vanguard. They had a leader of the Balrogs named Gothmog who was the highest command near Morgoth. He wielded a giant flaming axe . There were estimated to be around 6 to 10 Balrogs in total. One of them including Durins Bane aka the one in fellowship of the ring that fights Gandalf . Tolkien was a bit iffy on that information of how many there were and how many that survived. There could be more than one still alive but book wise it was the one that attacked Gandalf that was the only one recorded. ) Morgoth taught alot to Sauron. And I'm assuming since finally we're getting a time when he was in his physical form and not a spirit that looks like a flaming eye lol , that were gonna see some bad ass Sorcery powers from him along with some pretty intense moments of dialogue and fighting. So can't wait to see when he's in the charecters faces etc lol when he gets fully out of hiding which should be a lot sooner than we think.

My only quibble (which I’ve only just noticed despite numerous viewings) is that the map of Middle-earth is wrong. Assuming we’re watching part of the War of Wrath, then Beleriand should still be showing and M-e that much nearer Aman. Because Galadriel mentions in her voiceover that M-e was left in ruin which would have been Beleriand falling into the Sundering Sea. Might be a rights issue as the First Age map of Beleriand doesn’t feature in LOTR. But, yeah, only just noticed that 😊

5 altogether, two blue, one grey, one brown and one white. The blue wizards arrived earlier than the others I think and not much is known about them bar their names? and where they vanished off to.

It's fairly obvious when someone doesn't like something, or when they were set on not liking something to begin with. I'm glad this show, and many shows, realize that some people wouldn't be happy regardless, so then they stopped making shows for them. It was the failing part of many series when they tried to keep the fandoms happy instead of just writing a good story. Star Trek had trouble with this in Enterprise, Star Wars until Mandalorian. Nothing wrong with a show needing to gain the following it deserves. Being a blind follower that will love anything that has an expensive tag to it is as toxic as the group of gatekeepers that are dead set against it. Just because they paid $200 million to be able to call it "lord of the rings" doesn't make it automatically gold. The hair thing is a funny thing some gatekeepers are fixating on. Can you imagine living 900 years and not trying different hair styles? lol. But I'd think over time they'd mostly get tired of cutting it every other week. I think it does match up with the world, because the world was hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Things change. So you do have to sort of "forget" what you know, and enjoy the world as it was back then. Galadriel went from warrior elf to enchant magic mistress. So a lot will have changed by then. But they're also feelings we, with our short lifespans, might not understand. Heck an elf here who might be angry and totally against humans might be an elf who has 3 human wives by the time the fellowship comes around. Look at our own world and how much changed in 300 years. Let alone how long it changed in this series. I think some of your confusion is jarring because we're lotr fans, so we're expecting to see things we understand. But think back the the first movie, for a new fan, when they were slowly introducing Frodo and the worldbuilding. I was new to it and I was just as dazed as you, Nerdy, asking, "where's the context?!". So you sort of have to watch this with "new" eyes again. I do have to say that part of the beauty of the lotr world is that context is usually broken or somewhat missing. It's one of those fantasy stories set "in a time way after some big things happened, existed" and you get bits here and there. So giving context was _never_ the strength of this franchise. And part of its charm. Reading the first few chapters you barely grasp the full scope of everything until they're with Elrond. So I'm actually super happy with _not_ having context and automatically knowing everything. It feels new and fresh like when I first went to see the first movie in theaters. And that IS what I wanted. I wanted to feel that feeling of wonder and confusion again in middle-earth.

Please remember the show is BASED on Tolkien's books. IT is NOT his work, nor has Tolkien had any input into this (dead since 1973) The LOTR movies were an ADAPTATION of his books. Those movies are legit. The Rings of Power are BASED on Tolkien's books. They are NOT legit. The word BASED is stating it is in that realm, BUT NOT an ADAPTATION of his work. Some movies state from the start that this is BASED on true events, but more likely the writers did not get all facts and made some characters fictional to work the script plot. Many war movies and true crime movies do this a lot. Amazon has stated this is NOT Tolkien's work nor is it an adaption of his work. Its just Americanized fiction based on Tolkien's books. Don't take this as cannon.

...."those movies are legit" 😂😂😂 - and yet, Peter Jackson removed and changed entire sections of the Lord of the Rings when creating his film trilogy. Tom Bombadil - removed. Barrow Downs - removed. Glorfindel - replaced by Arwen, who was given a much larger role. PJ changed the ENTIRE ENDING that Tolkien had written! The Scourging of the Shire - completely removed, as was Saruman and Grima's canon fates. There's much more of course - Eowyn, Gimli becoming comedic relief, Elves at Helm's Deep etc, but I think the point is pretty clear at this point.

I'm happy to say the show did not turn out as terrible as I feared. But it's also not as great as I had hoped. The budget is there, but there's nothing all that gripping for me personally (matter of opinion) and the writing in a lot of scenes is pretty lackluster. The actors are doing their best with what they are given, the cinematography is on point, and when the action kicks off it's typically pretty good. I still stand by what I said that the Elves do not feel grand enough (and there's so far not much human representation), and I'm not particularly invested in a couple of the sub plots so far, hopefully as the threads intertwine a bit more things will get even better.

Stunning visuals but the script is mid at best. It's borring and dull all the way through episode 2. It's like they hired the best visual designers in the world while also hiring 12 year olds to write the script. It's nowhere bad, but it's not good either.
