Ground Force Reaction - How To Get Power From The Floor - Golf Swing Tips - DWG
How do you use the ground in your golf swing? Modern tour pros seem to be hitting the ball longer and longer all the time, and they're using ground force reaction to create the power to do this. In this video Dan Whittaker explains how you can use the ground to increase the power in your swing.

Great explanation of the 3 different forces! It's amazing how a simple game can be so hard. :)

Thanks Dan, love this video. Have you got more drills to share on this? (Ground force power and kinematic sequence) Really trying to work on this. Thanks again, love your content!

Dan my grandfather was a +2 handicap golfer in the 1950's. I used to hit balls with him since 1969. He talked a lot about Sam Snead and his " squat" move. This is in order to use the ground forces in order to decelerate the arms into the strike and to slow the lateral movement of the shaft, at P6, in order to flex the shaft into impact and release that flex out of the div. In the Sam Snead squat move, the right knee, doesn't suddenly pop out, as so many modern teachers suggest, but is pointing] to 4.50 on the backswing, creating an elastic tension on the backswing, which results in external rotation, ie Sam Snead squat on P5 which in turn, leads to internal rotation at impact. The camera does not really pick it up, but if you look carefully, you can see it, in many great players swings. Ie Hogan and Snead, but it is not talked about, in modern teaching.

You mentioned the left knee and left ankle..................FINALLY!! Ive found only you and two others who speak of how critical those two components are for a swing. I was taught back in the 1970's that gold was played well if you knew how to use the ankles and left knee. Keep it up youre smack dead on with this idea of teaching. Salute

It's an honor to be the first to comment on this (yet another) of your mega-helpful instructionals, Dan. Another tip I might add to your vid is that keeping both upper (inner) arms CONNECTED TO THE SIDES OF THE TORSO is ESSENTIAL. Even a slight 'disconnect' with the arms in regards to the body WILL result in lack of yardage. If you aren't familiar with the old 'rags under the armpits' drill, then I'd suggest you put in a good amount of practice in order you adopt this most beneficial part of a sound, mechanical (yet loose and fluid) swing.

Superbly described Dan, thank you, I am struggling a little with 3 wood off the deck, not sure if I have it in the correct position at address.

Great analysis and good swings 👍 If i remeber right, did Hogan had extra spikes in his right shoe? It would great here about more that right foot action 🤔

Thanks for the video! I have had a lot of improvement using this technique with the driver, but am struggling with mis-hits with my irons. We know that with the driver we want to be hitting more up - and with irons more downward. Would you please comment on how this technique might need to be adjusted to accommodate these two shots? Thank you.

Having major trouble getting "shaft lean" or "lag tension" AKA getting the hands in front of the ball/shaft at impact. I know it's a loaded question as many other things could be causing this such as early extension.

I've been trying to do this for a few days. Been sucking at it. I need someone look like a coach. Just played a round and my ball striking was horrible. I hit the driver 265ish. On the 18th hole, I take a 3 wood and literally hit it 300 yards. Like...okey. 6:45. And that makes sense because most of my driver shots have been tops. Maybe the tee needs to be higher.

Let the right wrist unflex when doing this, don’t try and force maintaining right wrist flexion through impact?

It's ironic that everyone made fun of Bubba's leg action (particularly with his Driver) when he first came out on tour and now everyone is advocating using ground forces to get "the Jump" and thus get more speed and distance. An American friend of mine has a distinct squat into his Backswing and almost a lunge into his Impact & follow through and despite being in his 60s he absolutely HAMMERS the Ball! I have tried to copy him but I lack the flexibility and his timing to make it work, unfortunately.

Mate, try looking at the action as a sequence rather than timing. Just an idea that might work for you.

there are 3 main factors why PGA guys seem much "longer" than guys in the past - #1 Tiger Woods - pretty self explanatory there, #2 - Money attracts better talent and better athletes, early entry into golf (this is occurring in a professional sports), #3 - technology like trackman that correlates feel to reality, technology has enabled player to fast track the understanding and observation of what is actually happening to the ball when they hit it, where as in the past you had to have a caddie standing at the target to figure things out, even if trackman could tell you exactly how far you hit, that would be light years ahead of what you had to do in the past. they can spend more time off the course working on fitness, diet and the mental side of the game rather than pounding balls all day ala Tom Kite. efficiency with time. i highly doubt any modern player used the ground force better than Nicklaus, Palmer, Player or Trevino, with the exception of Tiger.
