Dude, you probably couldn't have chosen a better plane to fly in. The Fokker DVII came along later in the war, but is arguably the best fighter of WWI. It was that good it was even mentioned by the Allies in the Versailles treaty, telling the Germans that they hand to hand all of them over.
@jessasnamoi3 жыл бұрын
There were actually two better planes: The Siemens-Schuckert D.IV was the "premium plane" which was of higher overall quality and the Fokker D.VIII which was a monoplane & only in action for the last few weeks of the war (but proved even deadlier than the D.VII). Still, the D.VII was feared by the Entente and was the most successful mass-produced WW1 fighter. I only wanted to point out that there is still more to "discover". ;)

10:25 About that concept of letting the enemy live as long as they’re out of the fight, there was also a general rule in WW2 against shooting crippled aircraft or especially men in parachutes. In fact, I heard that a Luftwaffe officer or something directly told the pilots under his command that if they shot a man who had bailed out of his plane, he’d kill them himself, or something along those lines. Even the German pilots in that war took those rules of engagement very seriously. In fact, that one bf-109 pilot that spared a crippled B-17 that wasn’t able to shoot back, and was barely keeping itself in the air at low altitude, explained that the reason he spared it was because to him, shooting it down would have been no different from shooting a parachute. Meanwhile in War Thunder, no such morals exist. If you’re crippled and trying to make it back to base, the other players will finish you off with no hesitation.

@gascan3 жыл бұрын
Flying WW1 dogfights in VR is the best experience I have ever had in a flight sim. The planes have lower performance and lower lethality, so the fights start much closer and take place at much closer range. By the time WW2 rolled around, the fights are starting at a range when I can barely ID the target. In WW1, I can tell if its a Fokker or an Albatros that I am attacking well before I have to worry about getting shot at. Once the fight begins I get close enough to see the pilot, to see the squadron and personal markings so that I know who I am fighting. Its much more personal and immersive. @@wutang9641 The best graphics card and CPU you can afford (IL2 is pretty CPU bottlenecked, so both are important). Most of the modern headsets are plenty good. My grandfather was an engine fitter working on Bristol Fighters during WWI. His rouse to get in the air was to try to fix an engine problem on the ground, and then announce that he really needed to hear it when airborne to make sure that the (insert spurious noise here) had properly disappeared when the engine was under more strain. You ordinarily weren’t allowed to fly unless you were an officer. Of course he was never involved in any fighting but it gave him the aviation bug. In WWII he was engineer aboard 63 foot ‘whaleback’ Air Sea Rescue Launches, plucking downed aircrew from the sea, as well as dropping off SOE agents off the coast of France. The launches had three 500hp Napier Sealion engines, so using just one to reduce the noise, they’d sneak up to the coast at night and drop off agents via an inflatable dinghy. His son worked on the tail assembly of the Canberra bomber, and later became head of the crashworthiness section at Sikorsky, working on the Black Hawk.

I always enjoyed the 1st person dogfight simulators. Even the earliest "3-D" raster graphics (line art) versions. (Approx. 1983) We used to hook up the cassette ports on 2 of our Radio Shack Color Computers (back to back) with a 4-pin patch cable (for communications), and run the program "P-51" (I know... WW2), using the keyboard or a joystick for control, and fly head to head. We would use a CRT color TV, (usually through the antenna on Ch3 or Ch4), and although the graphics "mode" was ONLY monochrome, by software resetting the interlace, it generated red or blue colored lines for the outlines of the aircraft and the 3-D world. Primitive by any current standards, but tremendous fun! I gotta go look in the attic now and dig out some antiques.

People want to fly the planes they take the time to learn in online dogfighting, not the first one available, I don't think their multiplayer works in that aspect at all.
@Gardimus3 жыл бұрын
For those just getting into the game, the busy times for multiplayer are Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. If you are new, the discord link is in the server description; feel free to jump in and people will help you learn your aircraft. The best part of WW1 multiplayer is it doesn't take much experience to become and asset to the team. The learning curve on most of the planes is very shallow and the fights last long enough that you don't constantly insta-die. I hope to see GS join us for a campaign sometime.

this looks absolutely INSANE in VR. I've never used a VR headset, but this makes it extremely enticing....

Awesome. Try this with a gunner in the back against F-16 or F-22 dogfight.

Ducking behind engine block should actually make pilot-model hide too. Wonder if that's modelled. Also the fact you can hear screams of the crew when aircraft is burning, while sinister and terrifying, adds greatly to the immersion. No flying like WW1 flying.

after reading several books about the air war in WW1, the descriptions of flamers and seeing it happen in game is chilling
