Derek Trucks is so friggin' hard to imitate. It's not scales, or notes, or tones with him. It's those "microbends" and those notes that aren't "in tune" that just floors me every time. He has such incredible feel and soul behind that slide. He's gotta be the most soulful guy out there.

BB King said to Derrick; "I've heard and played with some of the best slide players in the business. I've never heard it done any better than that." The video did not make John Mayer look good, even though John is a gifted guitar player as well. A little soft for my preference but gifted.

Typically, on 'Lie In Our Graves', the band kicks back into the chorus, full bore, after the elongated jam solo. Dave gave the hard hand wave 'were done here' signal to make sure they got the vibe Dave was feeling to end right there. Had he nodded to Carter, or something, the whole band was ready to jump back in. Incredible band of world class musicians!! Best Live Band!!

Love how blown away by Carter you are, too. I play piano and guitar, grew up learning Dave songs, but never tried drums. Love Dave’s idiosyncratic tunes and range of material, their whole band’s musicianship with each other and authenticity. But dang: Carter. He can be the mama hen, making all these things happen right on time out of nowhere the way a mother of a big family does, like magic, and then switch into something flamboyant without ever being showy (somehow) and then go full Rambo kicking ass and taking names, with the powerful fluttering grace of Muhammad Ali - all while grinning and chomping gum like he’s having the best day of his life. Seems like a master painter who uses drumsticks instead of paint brushes. This was so fun to watch you enjoy!

@@cold02rex Remember Duane didnt even play guitar that long. Damn sure didnt play slide that long. 10 years total and 3 years of slide 68-71, remember he died at 24. Derek had been playing as long as duane at 19. 3 years of slide and he is widely considered one of the best derek had 3 times as long at the ten year mark. SRV topped jimi technically as a player but I do agree. But of course Derek surpassed him and its what everyone wanted and I am sure Duane would be proud. I've seen him live well over a dozen times. Mostly with the ABB at the Red Rocks in july/august every year. that chapter is now closed but I still go see Derek and Susan. 13:47 "Ok, you just saw...", Michael, my man, I am so glad you stopped because I don't think anyone could possibly explain the amazing musicianship we just watched. When I saw the title of the video, YES! I HAVE TO WATCH IT! Organic, colorful, fluid, jaw dropping, and I could just keep going on, are the first few things, in my sad attempt, that I could try to explain with. I saw the band live a few years ago, and they are just masters at what they can do, and improve at the drop of a dime, and still make it sound uniquely different every single time with other artists or bands, and then create a piece of art. Sometimes, there just are NO words! ✌️

Your reaction is absolutely amazing! What you didn't do is play this to the very end where Dave picks the song back up and closes it. I was dying to see your reaction when he does that! DMB is the best around, IMO, band wise and hence why the sell out to crowds night after night, year after year. Thanks for this!

Ilove your breakdowns. One of the ONLY things I wished you would have commented on.... but it would have almost have to have been post edit... is that at after Derek stands and BURNS that entire solo... coming out of it at 13:00 HE looks up at Dave to let him know He's ready to bring it home.... Dave then walks into the Circle to get the BANDS attention... and LIKE ANY great band would do.... they follow DAVE, into the fact that WE'RE breaking it down now. Derek's look to Dave,... Dave, leading his band. THEN that magical slide up note. AMAZING!!!

LIOG, with that breakdown in the middle, is tailer-made for a good guest spot, and I've seen more than a few over the last 25 years. Derek's former Allman Brother Warren Haynes was a great one, and this is awesome, too. First saw Derek when he was 19 or 20, playing with Phil Lesh & Friends. He's fantastic.

Hi Michael, I have listening to your reaction and I loved your enthusiasm about it. This band is definitely amazing. Actually it should come back to one more chorus till the end. But as you said, they stopped it with the ending of Derek Trucks. On another song you should look for is Lie in our graves Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds Live at Radio City. Watch it and let me know what you think ;)

Sorry, dude. You’re just not gettin what dave is playing. If you notice, dave stays very close together with his fingering, as opposed to the slides you’re dropping in. I really Really REALLY dont mean any insult… i’ve watched many of your vids, and appreciated them all! But part of what makes Dave’s music so fun to play is how his complexity is kept so simple. Thank you, i look forward to more!

Yeah, thankfully I didn't die before I heard this. (That's what often panics me about awesome performances like this - I just want to live forever and not miss anything that might be coming up.) And it's fortunate that the audio is reasonably good (along with great camera work) despite the crowd roaring their approval through most of it. You knew even before he broke out the Coricidin bottle that this was going to be something very special. He manages to milk every bit of the beauty and emotion out of this break that would be possible. Part of it's in the genes, of course, but then he just sticks to the melodic-line script and doesn't launch off into anything goofy like a lot of unpleasant chromatic licks just for the sake of trying to be different and edgy. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But you gotta have the chops in addition - I realize this is SO beautiful, but I _don't_ have the finesse to be able to "put words to paper" as it were, like he does. The great ones have a way of making a guitar cry like a violin (see: the Clapton Crossroads breaks, e.g.), and you hear a lot of that here. I LOVE this tune - even without the break - one of my favorite DMB songs. But this DT break just sends it through the stratosphere. If you're not touched by this, then I just don't know what to do to help you.

Man I hope you've at least listened to an acoustic Tim and Dave version of this song. Derek's amazing solo is a tribute to Tim. For example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmqnaoeGa9R3sLs&pp=ygUMdGltIGFuZCBkYXZl . I'm sure I'm not the first to mention this. Love your stuff, man.
