Weapons expert, Ian McCollum reacts to the AK-47 gun in five video games. Ian is a firearm expert, historian, and founder of both Forgotten Weapons and Headstamp Publishing, and he's here to share his gun expert knowledge on one of the most popular weapons in games, the AK47.
From Call of Duty: Warzone and Fallout 3, to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Far Cry 2 and GoldenEye, Ian breaks down just how realistic the AK47 is in games.

Actually the AK in CS has quite high damage, it's just that the person playing these clips has really bad aim so it looks like it takes more shots than it actually does. It's one of the few guns in the game that ignore head armour at any range meaning you can score headshots from the opposite side of the map.

His critic of the CS's game play mechanics were off, but you really can't fault him for that. In CS, the crosshairs are more of a suggestion if the player isn't still. More so if they are running. The reason why someone would "dump a mag into someone", isn't because the characters are damage sponges. But in fact the player is spraying and praying with most the shots missing because of the spread pattern.

Just in case Ian reads this: The CSGO AKs bullets don't actually go where the crosshair is. All the crosshair really does is show you where the first bullet will go, the rest of the bullets are going to start climbing so you need to pull the crosshair down and essentially aim below the enemy. It has a spray pattern you need to memorise and practice to effectively hit anything when spraying. CS is notoriously hard for noobs because it is counter-intuitive to other games where the bullets will go where your crosshair is, on top of having movement inaccuracy and you need to be standing almost still to be able to hit anything. The CSGO AK will actually kill in 3 - 4 bullets depending on where you hit but it's hard to keep bullets on target, especially at medium ranges.
@IRMentat

indeed OSOK headshot 3-4 core-body shots. CS is a fairly unforgiving as games go regarding inbound damage, including when armoured. hell, it's one of the few games that still lets shotguns do pretty much anything beyond fistfight ranges. it made my 2-3 playthroughs of OG half life with the counter-life mod highly enjoyable.

I'm sure Ian would be happy to tell you that the AK's long-stroke gas piston system generates an upward torque on the rifle, which can contribute to that sweet muzzle rise that makes AK bursts so OP in CS. The M4's gas system keeps the bolt's mass more in line with the barrel (and the stock) and should generally exhibit less muzzle climb.

As far as Far Cry 2, the AK exploding was done on the premise that your gun wears out with a lot of use. Over time, things like head spacing (position where the cartridge is locked into battery inside the breach in it's "ready" state) goes out of whack from overheating and general wear (It is a controlled explosion going off inside the weapon after all) - which increases the odds of an out-of-battery detonation. An AK fired in high volumes and overheating will reach this threshold a lot quicker than an AK that is fired in moderation, with the barrel kept at reasonable temperatures (as in not hot enough for it to double as a cigarette lighter). Since Far Cry 2 is set in some war-torn fictional country in Africa, the weapons are thought to be recycled from previous conflicts. Meaning the guns have a lot of wear and tear on them already - hence why they break down so quickly. Played Far Cry 2 a lot back in those days. Had lots of fun with it.

@@mattmurphy7030 1) If a round is not in a chamber that it is designed for, the brass or steel cartridge casing will not hold form and will fragment outward. Does that sound like an explosion to you? Point stands. 2) Not chamber wear. Barrel and receiver wear. A rifle that is not being maintained (ie: like the conditions presented) will be more prone to having a catastrophic malfunction due to these parts breaking loose. 3) While jamming and other malfunctions are more common when this begins to happen, you can bring on a catastrophic failure if you continue to use the weapon without replacing parts. 4) You should probably stop watching James Yeager. Your attitude very much reflects it. You listen to an asshat, you start sounding like an asshat.
