Appreciate for the dedication to this stuff, Got a Steam Deck last year and had been frustrated with analog controls for a while now, so I dug into learning how to get the most out of Steam API. Man, I find Gyro so much more comfortable now, was able to play through a few games where the analog controls just irritated me. You have no idea how many times I stop/started Doom Eternal.

on steam deck, people are using the right trackpad for horizontal movement with high sensitivity, and disabling vertical movement. with trackball mode set to 'high'. and also using gyro. im using it as well. and its awesome.

My favorite way to temporarily disable gyro is -> in gyro settings - Gyro Enable Button = Right Pad/Touchpad Touch AND Button Behavior = Off. Saves some time in configuration, and saves a button for game controls.

for the steamdeck, steamcontroller? or the dualsense or dualshock? On the dualsense and dualshock the trackpads are to far away to reach comfortably. So i use the left stick click. but i am afraid to break the sticks by clicking it so much. Right now i am trying out The flydigi apex 2 in rewasd. it has full support, so i can make the back buttons unique bindings. On one of the back buttons i use gyro off on press and on again on release press. It saves the sticks from breaking down. I also have a steamdeck and i just let it sit on the default right stick and righ pad touch, and button to on instead of off.

wich camera do you use to film your hand cam? do yu record gameplay and handcam seperatly and then match the video tracks? or do you connect the camera feed to some program like obs studio and then record the hand cam and gameplay screen at the saem time? i want to make a few gyro video's in my native language (dutch) for a few friends but i am not very good at setting up my dslr and gaemplay with obs yet. My camera is actually a Webcam, the Logitech C920. I record gameplay and the hand cam at the same time with OBS. Sometimes I use the layout that you see in the video and sometimes I increase the resolution of the recording on OBS so I can record the game and my hands separately, then create whatever layout I want in post. Just be creative and keep it simple, there is nothing fancy about it ;D

What would you suggest for flick stick on the steam controller? Also for older games do you suggest just doing MK instead of trying to emulate the controller (ex borderlands 2)

I never used a steam controller but I'm sure it works, it will only feel a bit different. For any game, old and new I would first try mixed inputs and if that doesn't work, go full mk instead. Most games of the 2000s and the beginning of the 2010s didn't had mixed inputs, but the Borderlands series actually did, and it's very seamless. I made a video about that recently, you can just import my config on your Steam Deck.

I have been using flick stick a lot on the steam deck to play deadlink. It turns out that the capacitive thumbsticks and back facing buttons are the missing ingredient for natural gameplay, at least for me. I'm hoping steam comes out with a steam controller that replicates the steam decks utility. Do you have a preferred method of disabling gyro for ratcheting? I haven't found anything that feels natural.

I don't use gyro ratcheting that much, but when I do, I set to R3 because I'm ready used to it, but I get that that's kinda of a awkward button, so I would suggest square/X, because you can reload guns with a regular press and short hold press to disable gyro

0. Just to clarify. This guide is a little outdated, but most of your questions aren't affected by the new updates, so I think it's all good. 1. I don't think Steam allows for macros in the traditional sense, you can manually set multiple inputs so the same button, click on the gear icon and delay the activation of each button. It sounds like a pain in the ass, but I can see being more powerful than traditional macros. 2. You can use the same process in the video, with any activator you want, with any button you want. Unfortunately you can't change the binding of the PS button. That button is exclusive to open and close the steam overlay. There is a button combination to open the Steam keyboard, I just don't remember which button combination. You can probably find more information on Steam Settings. 3. Re-center buttons aren't impossible, but without a native implementation, the results are very clunky. There is a guide on how to make a re-center button on the gyro subreddit. 4. I think so? I'm not sure, you can try. Hope this answers all of your questions! :D

About using both traditional analog stick and flick stick at the same time, I'm not sure. Maybe you can set it to normal analog stick and create a layer with flick stick, then you set the outer ring binding to the "hold action layer".

Personally I don't care for Gyro and play better with the sticks. Is it possible to combine flick stick with the sticks? I know gyro is good and even best sticks, but my preference is just using the plan sticks and has been my best tool forever that I had countless hours of practice on. I was thinking it was possible to make one turn movement right or left with the right stick click? I love my series eltie controller 2 paddles far too much to swap to a ps5 controller for gyro which hurts in my hands due to it's size.

I don't have my computer in front of me so I can't test this right now. I remember seeing in the joystick configuration (possibly in the advanced options) there's a way to set the outer ring as an activator. Maybe you can set it to activate an action group that changes the joystick to flick stick. That way when moving the joystick within the inner area it'll work like a normal joystick but when you move it in the outer ring it'll work like a flick stick. I don't know if it'll be playable though

I don't recommend any third party controller because of compatibility issues. But it will definitely work and if it's your preferred way to play, go for it!

There was a bug in public for Switch Pro controllers, and anything else that spoofs being a switch pro controller (i.e. 8Bitdo when in switch mode). It's fixed in beta, and should be fixed as soon as that matures to a public release.

The controller needs to be recognized on Steam as a Switch Pro Controller or a DualShock4. If you are using a third party controller, they often have a switch mode. That's what you need to use.

I'm using steam link app on a linux machine to stream a game from my windows PC. I connect my dualshock 4 to my linux pc via bluetooth and the gyro doesn't seem to work. However, if I connect the controller directly to the windows machine then it works but this kind of defeats the purpose of the steam link app. Do you know if we can make it work through the steam link app?

It is the speed at which the stick goes from the centre to the edge which i want to determine if or not flick stick behaviour should be triggered

What you want can not be done on steam at the moment. If you want analog camera movement and flick stick at the same time, you shoulld either use a button to modeshift the stick to flickstick (but the swithc to flickstick cant be controlled by moving the stick faster from the center) or you can use a button to shift to an action layer with flick stick.

@@caleasthetic indeed, i have resorted to using stick down as the mode shift button. works really well with a steam controller since you can press the track pad down at the edge and it does the mode shift and turn with 1 click ( with analogue sticks you have to move the stick while holding it down ) although with steam controller you do need to setup some input delays to make it work.

just a question: why disable aim assist if it helps me to hit more shots? i heard some people talking the same, but im new to this gyro settings world and i could not understand this issue w aim assist... in paladins, A.A. is very strong and lets you hit like 15 headshots or even more in a row..

Great question! For 2 reasons. 1: since in many ways gyro is similar to a mouse, gyro doesn't need aim assist, just like a mouse! 2: Often AA with gyro can feel like a magnet against your inputs, gyro is very precise, if the game messes with your aim it can feel really awkward. You can activate it if you want, but my recommendation is to leave it off. Just test it and see what feels best for you! ;D Hope this helps!

Some games, like Valorant, have an anti-cheat that makes steam input impossible to work. Overwatch didn't have that level of anti-cheat, but it's very possible that they may receive one at some point. I hope that's not the case.

Some games have native support for it, like CoD:MW2 and MW3, Fortnite, Deathloop and Boomerang X. In these cases you need to disable Steam Input and use a USB connection to be able to use gyro. There are also other programs that allow you to use gyro like DS4win, reWASD and JoyShockMapper, but Steam is the most "user friendly" of the bunch.

@JonathanMeza81 change the controller to Switch mode. Xbox controllers don't have gyro. If Steam is recognizing it as an Xbox controller, then you won't be able to use gyro.

The mode switch is on X on the Windows version. I use the mode switch of 2.4G on the Switch version. It auto detects as an Xbox controller. How do I get either controller to detect as Switch mode? Should it be Bluetooth using the Switch version only?

Bruh when i try to control recoil my crosshair automatically goes down. When i pull back(tilt back up) my controller. The aim goes way above forcing me to keep me to play in an uncofortable grip. Any tips?

Seems like your controller isn't calibrated or there is something else sending inputs, or your vertical sens is just too high. 1. Try recalibrating your controller 2. Check if you are not using any other programs that are using your controller and unplug any controller that you are not using. 3. On gyro settings, the second slider is the vertical sensitivity, try decreasing to see if it helps!

Oh, I see. That's why I said in the video that you need a button to disable gyro, so you can control your recoil, disable gyro, reposition your controller and continue like usual. It's tricky to get used to, but after a while you will do that in the middle of a fight in no time. Again, it's similar to lifting a mouse. Close to the end of the video I explain how I set a button to disable gyro, usually I hold 3R but you can use literally any button, my brother likes to reload his weapon and disable gyro at the same time, for example.

No, unfortunately you need to make a different config for every game. If you want, you can just follow the chapters labeled as "Essential" After making a config that you are happy with, you can export that as a template, then you can import it to every game and just adjust the sensitivity. But that probably won't work as well as you think because every game is different, some doesn't allow for mixed inputs and so on. I already explained all of this in the beginning of the video. I also have a playlist showing off my configs for multiple games, so maybe the game you want to play already has a config.

Amazing tutorial. just miss one thing. Roll as Horizontal movement is much more intuitive and most people would prefer. It would be awesome show people this option. Many of my friends didn't know and have give up from gyro just because this wheel movement that many of you guys use are absolutely terrible. In fact, I find hard to believe that anyone can be accurate using this. It's like playing fighting games with a racing wheel lol

What more do you want out of him about one of the most subjective aspects of gyro than pointing out most of us prefer Yaw for controllers and Roll for Steamdeck? I personally think roll (on controller) is so much worse that more people would bounce of gyro if it had more focus. Exception: I found roll with inverted x to be neat (held up vertically) when on bedrest from a leg injury... because that's visualising it like a laser pointer, like with default yaw on a horizontal controller~

I did forget to mention in the video that roll is better if you are playing with your controller pointing upward instead of forward tho. Did you just accidentally skip the part of the video where I talk about roll mode, or you are trying to say something else?

The game runs fine on my laptop i have mostly been single player games guy and wanted to try fps games and since i had ps4 i tried the controlled the movement i could do and practice but aiming is very hard with controller for me its my first time, and since i used gyroscope to play codm on my ipad i though i could use gyroscope and i followed your instruction and put left bumper but when i use ads the frame rate is still 100 fps bit gyro is not smooth

It is in some games like Fortnite, COD:MW2, Deathloop, GoW Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, TloU part 1 and 2, Neon White (ps5), Deep Rock Galactic (ps5), Days Gone, and many many more. But yeah, it should be in every game, but people don't ask for it enough.

What the heck is steam? I have a ps5. I played skyrim on my switch, and it's a lot less expensive than the ps5 I could open locks without a problem, and the same with aiming my bow.
