00:45 What happens when you wash your hair properly
01:13 How often should you shampoo your hair

03:27 Conditioner for hair loss
Hi, my name is William Gaunitz, and I'm a fellow with the World Trichology Society. With over 21 years of experience as a certified trichologist, I've dedicated my career to helping people regrow hair. A common question I ask my clients is, "How often do you wash your hair?" Especially when dealing with hair loss and scalp conditions, it's crucial to understand that a buildup of bacteria, fungus, oil, and parasites on your scalp can exacerbate these issues. The less you shampoo, the worse these problems can become.
Many people, when facing hair loss, become overly gentle with their hair, barely touching the scalp during shampooing. However, this approach can actually lead to further hair loss. Proper shampooing, as I'll demonstrate, helps remove dead hairs that are bound to fall out, cleanses the scalp surface, and creates a clean, healthy environment conducive to hair growth. It also aids in exfoliating the scalp, which is essential if you're using any topical scalp serums, ensuring they penetrate effectively.
For those dealing with scalp conditions and hair loss, I typically recommend shampooing every 24 to 48 hours. The process should go as follows:
First Shampoo: Apply a quarter-sized amount of shampoo to your hair and scalp. Lather it up and use the pads of your fingers to scrub the scalp, working from the front to the nape of the neck. Let the shampoo sit for 30 seconds to a minute. This scrubbing action is key for dislodging parasites like Demodex, which feed off hair follicles. By manually removing them, you expose the hair follicle rim, allowing deeper penetration of shampoo in the next round.
Rinse and Repeat: After a minute, rinse your hair and apply shampoo for the second time. Repeat the scrubbing process, letting it sit for a bit longer this time - about a minute to a minute and a half.
This double shampooing technique ensures that debris, oil, and buildup around the hair follicle are removed, allowing better action from the shampoo and more effective treatment application.
After shampooing, it's vital to use a conditioner like Scalp Therapy by Advanced Trichology. This acts like a moisturizer following a toner or cleanser, rehydrating the scalp and bolstering its immune system. Use a quarter-sized amount of conditioner, more if you have longer hair, and work it into the scalp down to the nape. Let it sit for about two minutes, or longer for longer hair. This helps the conditioner penetrate the hair shaft and provide necessary hydration.
For women with very long hair, apply this conditioner to the scalp and use a different, longer chemical-based conditioner on the length of your hair. This method conditions both the scalp and the length of the hair effectively.
Once you've shampooed twice and conditioned, apply a topical scalp serum directly to the scalp after towel drying your hair. This ensures the best penetration due to the thorough cleansing and preparation of the scalp.

Remember, proper shampooing decreases inflammation, removes harmful microbials, and creates an optimal environment for hair growth. If you have any questions, feel free to drop them in the comments. I'm here to help in any way I can. Don't forget to check out my other video for more tips on hair care.

Is this serious? Plenty of those who make youtube videos on hair have full head's of hair. But even if it was, that shouldn't make much of a difference for something so reliant on genetics. It would be like Shaq making a video on how to be tall and you praising his advice because - since he is tall his tips must work?

You actually said what I have been thinking for the last 3 years. I had short layered hair for close to 50 years ( I am 63) shirt layered hair needs the be washed every day or it looks like crap. I'd roll my eyes Everytime someone said oh you can't wash your hair everyday, yes can't, people would actually say that including hairdressers, I paid no mind. 2020 due to lock down I now am a long haired girl I started washing less frequently out of pure laziness it's much harder to wash dry and style long hair every day. It was around September of 2021 I noticed hair loss I wasn't shedding just not growing, I started chalking it up to age but yet that nagging feeling that it was dues to not washing but twice a week, started reading up and thought..hmm I think I'm going to try to wash more often. I think I'm going to start the daily wash again and see how it goes,I know this much , even though people constantly say " you can't do that" I can 🤷‍♀️

Hi many thanks. I have struggled with lesions and sore scalp all my life. I’ve concluded that too much sugar in my diet is the main cause, alongside dairy and wheat. Getting type 2 diabetes was a blessing as it made me do a whole system rethink of all aspects of my life. Learning how to wash my hair correctly has been a revelation and I hope will strengthen it again in the longer term. Since taking processed sugars out of my life my sore scalp has stopped, with the wash regime helping as well. All the best Al

Thank you so much, doctor. I love your videos. I find myself keep coming back to them:) Quick question: I had an allergic reaction to a clarifying shampoo, which caused burning and hair loss. I have been washing everyday like you mentioned. The hair loss and burning stopped but still have tenderness and my scalp sometimes feels tight (Does this means it is dry and I am over shampooing it?). Should I continue to wash everyday or every other day? (I use a mild baby shampoo that has aloe vera and olive oil in it. I have curly hair.)

I highly agree to this. My hair doesn't fall out that much when I shampoo daily before. 10 strands minimum I guess? As far as I can see. I tried following the popular advices out there where you should shampoo only 2x a week, ending up my hair being so damn oily and when I shampoo for that intended shampoo day I got lot of hair fall. We really should listen to our bodies and do what works best for ourselves. Thank you for this information, I highly relate to this.

Thanks for a great tutorial. Do you have any advice on whether to wash your hair with cold or warm water. I've read cold water helps 'seal in' any topical application, and helps maintain natural hair oils. But I have also read cold water discourages blood flow to the hair - which seems in contradiction to some topical applications which aim to encourage blood flow to the hair (among other things). Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I use a very mild, safe and sensitive shampoo, which I use typically 2x day (Am and Pm). Having great success with your products, but I prefer to wash inthe Am because the folligrowth is oily and i cant really style the way I like. Of course, I wash in the evening as well so the topical can absorb. I use a more thorough shampoo once a week, and condition typically one to two times per week.

Hi, I find your videos very helpful because they are straight to the point, although I had a few questions about this one. What would you define as a scalp condition? 1. I live in the UK, and in the winter (due to the cold and dry weather) I suffer from dry scalp flakes. Wouldn't shampooing every 24/48 hours and twice make the environment on my scalp even drier? 2. Since I have started researching on how to make my hair healthier, I have learnt that most of our hair is shed in the shower due to it being wet. Surely shampooing twice will pull out more hairs because you are making contact with your wet hair more often, making it more susceptible to shedding? 3. Why do you apply conditioner to the scalp? I have been told this entire time to only apply it to the mids and ends of the hair, so as to not clog the hair follicles with conditioner. I don't mean to offend you with any of these enquiries or to question your ability to advise people on their hair, I am simply curious as I am being told contradictory information and so I want to find out for sure which one is right. Thank you.

Thank you! So I am not a huge advocate of the derma roller, because I feel as though it’s efficacy is totally overblown. But if you are going to use it for exfoliation, then yes you can do that. I do, however, recommend micro needling in a medical environment, every two weeks for usually for sessions, and then taking a 2 to 3 month break. But this is performed in the medical environment and it hurts and there is lots of blood because you’re getting into the dermal layer. That does work.

You also talk a lot about proper microbiom on scalp but applying serum right after cleansing hair isn't distrupting proper development of scalp environment? Get some blood work for nutritional items. I would recommend the zone 2 blood panel on our website. And also the FoliGrowth methylated vitamin on the website as well. www.advancedtrichology.com/products/foligrowth-ultra-hair-growth-vitamin-with-high-potency-biotin-folic-acid-and-26-herbs-and-vitamins?tw_source=google&tw_adid=670774750980&tw_campaign=15695067553&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiA2eKtBhDcARIsAEGTG42rB9wyNFO8OnRmnyIKQijJrB90heWDXiINPz51wA8BPqeDhv7CPkMaAr0dEALw_wcB

I would like to know the distinction between straight hair vs. curly hair (afro) as it's been often said that additional precautions are needed for the latter type of hair.

I did some research over a year ago (not afro but looong wavy/curly hair) and here's what I found after countless tries and research: Structured hair requires way more attention and care, especially a softer approach. Brush them only when they are wet (I brush right after applying conditioner to help minimize resistance using a "Tangle Teezer"-brush). Generally speaking structured hair is prone to being dry and thus needs to be hydrated more. I use 2 shampoos, first one to cleanse (based on tea tree) and another that's less aggressive and aims to be more hydrating. Conditioner is up to you, try which ingredients work best for you specially (tbh almost every conditioner seems to have roughly the same hydrating effect, do not apply to scalp but instead from half way up until the ends because your scalp produces oils but those don't reach the ends of longer hair thus you need to supplement and provide important hydration and minerals with a conditioner/oil plus applying to scalp causes excessive oil production). Apply a hydrating hair mask once every 7-14 days and keep it for 5-10min before washing out. Additionally use a deep cleansing shampoo once per month to get rid of product build up in your hair. Hair oil (based on herbs or fruits like rosemary or coconut) once or twice per week on the ends works fantasticly well. It's important to keep in mind that the natural oil your scalp produces is essential but at the same time having too much can cause issues quickly so experiment and find a balance between your natural oils and products. Another thing is to stay away from alcohol/perfume as an ingredient (dries hair out) and laureth sulfate/micro plastics (clogs up your pores). Good luck!

Hi i got question how do i fix seborrheic dermitis on the scalp? I have been losing hair since the age of 15, and i am 19. when i went to my dermatologist, he told me i had severe form of seborrheic dermitis, with telogen eluffivin. he told me to get check my cd4 count, does low cd4 count cause seborrheic dermitis? my scalp is inflammated, and i see yellow things coming out, when i lose hair i see white stuff like dandruff at the end when i lose hair, is that normal? i have hair loss on the top and sides, the top is more inflammated then sides, and the seborrheic dermitis for me is normally at the top, which i believe is causing the hair loss? i dont know what specific shampoo to use for this condition i have tried nizoral shampoo 1%, it doesnt seem like its working because i am getting inflamation, after using this shampoo. i was on accutane for three months, which i believd caused some hair loss for seborrheic dermitis and acne. i am currently taking bilastine and modelukast because i have severe allergy, igge was 600 +, and i have dust allergy when i last checked? does bilastine and modeluakast cause hair loss? my current plan to fix this condition is to change my diet, eat based on blood type? it is bit hard since moving to US because university here dont have kitchen in their dorm (but i figured it how to get kitchen), and mostly they have chicken in the canteen, which is not suitable for my blood type as i am blood type b? i am taking vitamin d3 supplement, i am going to try do this for a three months and see what happens Do you have any extra tips to solving this problem, like recommeded shampoo and conditioner?any other lifestyle factors?

I have a doubt sir regarding hair drying,I am afraid that as i apply conditioner right after shampoo it stops my hair from completely drying up, so the moisture in my hair cause me headache later in that day, that's why I apply conditioner after 4-6 hours. whether I am doing it right or does it affect my hair health, so far I feel ok but when I apply conditioner right after shampoo, my hair don't dry up quickly resulting me in headache.
