Half-Life 1 Chapters: Tier List

Good list, surface tension is definitely my favourite chapter. It's such a blast being stuck in the middle of a war zone while the aliens and soldiers fight it out. It makes for some of the most fun and dynamic gameplay in the game. I actually quite enjoy On a Rail for the same reasons.

For me, Surface Tension is the climax of the game. I'm finally outside, I've got the Tau cannon, and it's one action-packed set piece after another. It's like being Rambo.

"We've Got Hostiles" is not only 'S Tier' but it's also one of the best shooter levels in the history of gaming. Brilliant level design (you end up where you start) and the moment the marines kill that scientist, games were forever changed. Deep story telling in shooters was born.

I think it's the thing that makes you comfortable with the human combat in the game and how the encounters usually play out for me a S tier too (btw i think turrets and traps are really fun)

Questionable Ethics is great for so many reasons, but I love the set pieces, uncovered lore regarding the long term study of what you’ve been fighting, as well as the fact the who level is basically a sub mission to unlock a door and escape the lab.

By the way gargantua isnt invunerable, you can kill it with weapons like tau cannon, grenades or gluon gun

This is true! But in the chapter Power up it is almost impossible to kill without some real gameplay strats.

I think that the Gargantuan and airstrike sequence are actually still in Surface Tension, it is where the actual chapter gets it's name from but I believe it only starts after you go through the door you airstriked open

It's been a while since I watched your videos, this is a great tier list and you should definitely make tier lists for Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Decay, Half Life 2 and its episodes plus Black Mesa Source. You have a great knowledge of all the Half-Life games and your takes are spot on.

I think you mixed up Apprehension and Residue Processing? Apprehension is the water level with the giant fish and ninjas at the end.

19:00 hello yes that's me. Interloper has a really bad opening and ending, but otherwise I think it's actually quite solid. The environments in Interloper are easily my favourite in Xen and in video games in general and I think a lot of the alien factory and the whole stealth-like tentacle map are actually really solid. Even in the first map which is arguably the worst in the whole game you have the really interesting Xenian cave that's quite fun to go through, even though it's short. The section with the passive Vortigaunts is one of the most captivating in the game, after everything that's happened, you essentially get Anomalous Materials again, only from the other side of the coin.

Power up and We've got hostile's can be put on "this chapter exists?" tier. Jokes aside, I think i'd put on a rail on B because it's a nice break like you said after 2 boss fights (1 if you skip power up). But I never get lost in the chapter anymore. The only thing that keeps it at A tier for me is the limited movement. Residue processing is a nice D tier for me though. The lack of H.E.C.U combat in a platform/movement heavy level is something that could have made the level A or S tier imo.
