Chorus:
Easy, ready, willing, overtime
Where does it stop
Where do you dare me
To draw the line
You've got the body
Now you want my soul
Don't even think about it
Say no go
I, I 'll do anything
That you want me to do
And I'll do almost anything
That you want me to, ooh
But I can't go for that, no (no) no can do
No, I can't go for that, no (no) no can do
I can't go for that, no (no) no can do

Daryll said that when they where making "we are the world" MJ came over to him and told Daryll that his bass line from "I can't go for that" inspired his Iconic bass line to ",Billy Jean". Can you imagine that!!! That's one hell of a compliment.

Speaking about the meaning of the lyrics, John Oates has stated that while many listeners may assume the lyrics are about a relationship, in reality, the song, "is about the music business. That song is really about not being pushed around by big labels, managers, and agents and being told what to do, and being true to yourself creatively." This was done intentionally, he explained, to universalize the topic

Same for me in a way. I heard tunes like this as a kid and had access to the albums, and then much later on became nostalgic for them and loved them again. I was just telling some friends this morning that I love it when a saxophone breaks into a song because I grew up in the 80s.

I just read that they are in dispute- BREAKS MY HEART! I pray they sort this out peacefully! I was just watching a Film on Netflix and this song was played in the Police Car. So HAD to come and listen again. I then typed g@@gle to see what they are doing now - only to read about a Law Suit etc. Saddens me greatly- I thought they were great friends. Sending much love and prayers from the UK. I was shocked to read that both men are now in their 70s, but then I am in my 60s now. Gosh TIME FLIES!! I hear this music and it catapults me back to the 1980s when I was at University and I attended clubs or parties and this and their music was played over and over and over again. Then travelled from Britain to Nigeria in the 1980 - to visit my late mum - same thing at parties! Phew! Their music truly blessed generations. These men are legends!! Happy memories ❤

Fun fact: during recording of "We Are The World" Michael Jackson told Hall and Oates he was sorry for "stealing" the bass line from this for Billie Jean. And they were like "Um, dude, no you didn't." And I suppose if you try hard you can kinda hear it, but Billie Jean is slower and maudlin. It just shows what a different time that was. Greatness inspiring greatness.

Michael Jackson: Hall & Oates Said He Admitted He Stole ‘Billie Jean’ From Them. Hall told Rolling Stone that Jackson admitted to stealing from him. He remembered Jackson saying “I hope you don’t mind. I stole the groove from ‘I Can’t Go for That’ for my song ‘Billie Jean.’” Hall didn’t seem upset about this. He told Jackson “It’s all right, man, I just ripped the bassline off, so can you!” Hall didn’t say which song inspired the bassline of “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do).” Furthermore, he told Jackson “Oh Michael, what do I care? You did it very differently.’” All legends!

Omg, my aunt loved this group, I remember when I was like 8 and she would be listening to them when I stay over and her and her friend used to smoke joints, drink wine, and dance. Lol, I think she was a bad influence, she was my fav auntie, I love you aunt Linda

I loved Hall and Oates... I was 31 and I used to go to the Belly Up 2 blocks from my house in Solana Beach, CA when this first came out and I would dance the night away. Damn! the country, the music, the cinema, was so good back then... but now... it's so over. RIP

Tyler Ballz Why you mad, guy? The 80s in general were comical, from the neon jumpsuits to the hairstyles, etc. Massive amounts of cocaine mixed with waning artistic sensibilities makes for comedy gold, which is exemplified perfectly by the 80s, of which H&O were a staple of the culture. I didn’t say anything about their musical abilities, only that by today’s standards it’s pretty damn cheesy. “No can do...” Bahahaha That’s amazingly corny and lame, and that’s the reality whether your perception aligns with it or not. I ain’t mad; why you mad?

Michael Hurwitz lol why am I mad? Bro let me explain this to you as thorough as possible I’m definitely not mad and I didn’t look at it in that perspective when you explain the color jumpsuits and all that shit I guess I can agree with you I was born in 1991 though so I don’t really know much about the 80s but one thing I know is hall and oates Hey still banging at barbecues all across America and cookouts

Tyler Ballz Ha! All good. I was born in ‘81-the early 90s held some of that neon swag. Hey, I love H&O, but I also recognize that aside from the fantastic musicianship, the cheese is thick for sure at times. Peace
