Steve Perry never married (he said he never wanted to go through what his parents went through) but he did fall in love with a woman who was dying with cancer, she passed away and he grieved for years. He finally started writing music again and singing. I hope to see him live again. He will always be an icon to me. I see him occasionally (before COVID)...at S.F. giants games. He would sometimes sing during the 7th inning stretch. He’d sit in the stands like everybody else.

This song is about how hard it is to maintain a relationship - romantic and/or with family - when a musician is always on the road. The time on the road is actually what made lead singer Steve Perry quit the group. He said that during their heyday, they would be on the road for 10 months, then off for 2 months - with much of that time spent writing and rehearsing new songs to go out and do it all over again. Also during this time, Steve's girlfriend of 5 years broke up with him because of him being on the road so much, and Steve's mother was fighting a fatal illness. Not being able to be there for her his mom - and the demands of constant touring - is what caused him to leave the group. Steve took time off to be with his mom at the end and before she died, she told him to go back to the group. She died, and he went back after a few years. But the band had a falling out after he had serious health issues and the group members tried to rush him to get surgery before he was ready to do so. (It was kind of one of those: 'We're looking for someone to replace you." And: 'You don't have to fire me. I quit!' kind of situations.)

Got the privilege of seeing Journey live in 1983. Three shows that summer in July were all sold out. I was 15 years old. Best concert of my life. I adore this band. Steve Perry...still crushing on him after almost 40 years. This is my favorite band...not a song I don’t love. The rabbit hole is deep for Journey. They’ve paid their dues and did it right and the hard way. Endless touring...show after show. When I saw them live that summer in July 1983....best concert of my life!!! Hands down. Brings it all back. Faithfully...my favorite song! Try “lights” from 1978 original video. Beautiful!!! Keep the Journey reactions coming. Awesome!😎🎉💯

This song expresses the pain and loneliness of the road, but still remaining loving and true. ❤ You are just getting started on Journey, my friend! They are so much more than "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Open Arms", the ultimate relationship song for me. " Lights" "Lovin' Touchin'' Squeezin'" the little played "Only the Young" + "Sweet and Simple", " Stay Awile"' and "The Party's Over"...just to name a few. ❤. Peace J ✌ ☮

This song is similar to another song in 1983. In New York, drummer Mickey Curry could not be with Bryan Adams to record some songs bc if a contract with another singer. Luckily, Steve Smith was nearby. He played drums in the Adams/Jim Vallance song Heaven. This song + Obsession were placed in the 1983 B movie A Night in Heaven. Next suggested song from Journey w/Steve Perry: Open Arms live in Houston. 🕊 Other songs: I'll Be Alright without You, Girl Can't Help It, Wheel in the Sky live, Separate Ways, Message of Love, Anyway You Want It, Mother Father live, Still They Ride live. Separate Ways live. 🌁

It's about Steve being torn between his love of music and his love for his wife and kids but during the tour he had to tell her he was faithful because rock stars ain't always faithful
@Jezebel096 ай бұрын
Actually this song was written by Jonathan Cain, referring to his wife….. as one can see in the mirror taped onto the mirror…… Steve is singing it, doesn’t mean he feels less about his girl when they are (were) on the road. This song was written about Jonathan Cains wife.

The difference in this song is that it is just Steve Perry singing. No harmonies. And it sounds fantastic. I mean they are great together with the harmonies and it is showing them on the road together but it feels like he is just singing a message for himself and the rest of the band to their specific people. Now Hap, if you want to learn about the Birds and the Bees you need to listen to Lovin, Touching, Squeezing by Journey....fairly certain some babies were made during that song? Just saying, not admitting a single thing here....😂 thanks Hap! ❤️

I enjoy these Journey reactions on your end it's fun to watch that light come on when u see straight guys being very passionate but also "masculine" if you will. And a lot of it's about women n such. It's like you're F, these guys know how to put it out there. This is all middle school stuff for me. Always have a spec place for these guys. I'm not quite sure of your accent BUT I'm thinking you sound like a London boy. I've lived in your country it's a good place.

The music business is very hard, you write the music, cut the album and your for 12-18 month worldwide. You try to call your girlfriend or fly them to where your performing, but for them after time it gets boring and and hard for them to do. It does put a strain on the relationship. You finish the tour, come home relax and start writing songs and the process starts all over again. I know from experience, the group I was in open up for Journey many times. It was hard and long, but I would do it all over again.
