Have to agree. I was surprised to hear HM’s comment on dials. I’ve always thought that it’s much easier to glance down at a dial and see the position of the needle. You soon learn the geography of the dials and it’s easy to relate the needle position to a particular speed or to RPM.

@@brianiswrong Exactly! Digital speedo is infinitely better for sure. Great review and first of many I have read that has given criticism. I have a Velar p300 and have test driven the new p440e Sport. I must say in terms of luxury the new Sport is fantastic. The P440e does provide about 60 e miles, which is okay, but if the bulk was less it could have n 90 miles. I really agree with Harry, we need to drive down weight to incease efficiency, perhaps the SUV is doomed. My criticism is that my dealer quoted me a 2 year wait for delivery. This compounded by a £20,000+ Mark up on a used new Sport. No new Range Rover for me. I'll keep the p300 Velar. Thank you Harry.

@EleanorPeterson Жыл бұрын
7:50 - Some idle musing on the 'round dial versus square screen' display issue... There's a split-second data-recognition advantage in having round dials/circular displays. When our eyes see a dial, the information is either centred (digital display in the middle) or positional (needle pointing to known numeral locations around the face). A circle naturally guides the mind to what's important. We don't need to think about where to look - we just react to what we're being 'forced' to see. Wristwatches usually have round faces with analogue hands. We see the time - instantly - we don't read it. A digital display, however, requires thought. Seeing the time instead of reading it is the equivalent of learned muscle-memory when playing guitar chords. The shapes just happen, faster than you can think. On a car dashboard that means our eyes focus instantly on the required data in the circle before flicking back to the road. With a rectangular display - especially a digital screen - we're conditioned to see it as a page. Childhood conditioning runs deep. However limited the amount of data on show, we can't help but concentrate on checking everything, starting from the top-left corner just in case there's something new. In guitar terms, it's like having to think, "First finger goes here... Second finger, there; third goes over there..." That's way too slow for rock 'n' roll. Glancing at a modern car's rectangular digital speedo, even when we know that there's no more than a speed in mph to be seen, we naturally spend an extra tiny fraction of a second checking the rest of the 'page' for fresh information. We can't help it. It's how we were raised. A few microseconds may seem unimportant, but in this instance, thinking is bad. Thinking of where to look takes our focus off the really important part of what we're doing, which is driving. In traffic. Surrounded by idiots. Idiots who are also thinking about the wrong things, rather than relying on their faster-than-thought reflexes to respond to the right ones. Yes, the time differences involved are ridiculously small, but they exist. Today's drivers have more than enough distractions already - countless gadgets and toys, controls and settings, touch-screens, digital navigation maps, media menus, phones - and they're being operated from an air-conditioned, heated armchair (with shiatsu massage function🙄) by a driver who's all warm and snug and cosy and probably barely awake. So a round dial that takes less time to read than a square one is... good. A driver who prefers to take things easy, relax, slow everything down, take plenty of time to read the dashboard display(s) because it'd be rude not to is... bad. Your views may differ...💩👀

I hate the false stuff manufacturers put in their cars. At the front especially, let make the car have more drag and add weight. The material on the doors, great to clean once your kids have got there sticky hands on it. Def change the tyres first. Front spoiler is no no for me too. I still love found dials. I don’t need a tachometer though. I don’t believe anyone uses them. My problem with the flatscreen is it’s like it’s added on rather than in the dash. We all know Range Rover and sport don’t go together.

Love the brand…… from my Slla ex MOD on 900-16 bar treads……. my mates vinyl lined 2 door Rangey…… many many more since……. 33 years of moving them on recovery lorries has made me a decent living…… still admiring but not buying……. Owning…. G wagons, Amazons and my still pristine XC90 D5 SE When the first Disco landed with a big crash, courtesy of its monocoque body on a box chassis, we winced at the weight for carrying them……. then the reclothed Disco AKA Range Rover Sport appeared, thuggishly pounding out the ruts and straining my trucks yet further……… eventually, the replacement went proper monocoque architecture and became easier to move (and move them we did)……. Only to creep on up again, as you stated….. 😳 Most of our contracted rates have an adjustment for kerbweight and/or GVW…… now, I know they are far from unique in the premium SUV world, but Good God !! They are treated as commercial. We see many people yomping up the road with Range Rover models on 4 wheel trailers… behind vans and other SUV’s, clearly oblivious to the safety and legality of such actions……🙁 As you say Harry….. too many models 🙁 To me, the Evoque has a place……. the Defender should be the Discovery……. the Velour is pointless (as pointless as the Disco is ugly 🙂)…… the Disco Sport should be an Evoque GT or ?, the Range Rover as is, as it is a lovely thing and one we now rarely see at work - which is a good thing. Maybe you’re onto something with a “mad as a fish” sports thing, tauter, lighter, ridiculously overpowered - the sort of thing Tim Burton would have in lime green 🥳 Then…….. and most importantly……. A LANDROVER Utility spec, dry, draught free, enough driver seat room for an adult, simple, robust……. No electric version - save a hybrid, no gimmicks… steel wheels, decent tyres, coil springs, manual box with no more than 5 gears, 3500kg towing And CHEAP 🏁🇬🇧 The Landrover ruled the world…… then, like they say in Australia…… if you want to drive into the outback, get a Landrover……. if you want to drive back……. get a Landcruiser…… Time to redress the balance 🙂🇬🇧

LR I think have lost their way a bit, the RR SPORT and the RR from 2013 onwards until this whole new look were just fabulous to look at. This new sport with that gap between grill and number plate along with the cheap plastic lights at the rear on this and the RR are naff. I’m sure lots of built in improvements but sorry for me the RR from 2016 until last year were brilliant and lopes class but now I’m not convinced. Thanks though Harry love your vids!

I’m sorry, but what is the matter with the designers? I like the front splitter (well splitter-esque, at least) piece of equipment and the vents on the hood and the sides. But do they really have to be just for decoration? Would it have killed them to make them functional? I mean, that’s always been a pet peeve of mine to see things like that or exhaust pipes being purely for decoration.
@brianiswrong

I have never understood why car designers ,design a dummy vent (especially in or around the font grill) and not either have it body colour and solid, or black and add a couple of small (useless if you like) to atleast look functional.

Harry, brilliant review once again. Almost goes without saying. Do you feel Land Rover are slightly stretched across their range, Range Rover, RR sport, RR Velar,RR evoque, Discovery, Disco Sport, Land Rover defender? There seems to be a fair amount of cross over across their range. Maybe time to drop the sports models? And concentrate on a slimmer range. To me the full blown RR is now way beyond most people. The highest Discovery models are very plush and perhaps sit in the niche now. The new defender is far more like the Discovery was up to model 4. The Evoque could cover the Sport market. I am a big fan of the mark, I have 2 of their range.

I have come back to this video as Harry has now got one instead of the full fat RR. I do wish manufacturers would get rid of the what looks like a lap-top screen that is slapped into the cabin, rather than be more integrated within it. This RRS does look pretty again, but I’ll be sticking to my L320, which was very pretty and has absolutely everything I need apart from youth.

As someone who progressed from Sport to Range Rover, I have to say I can’t imagine going back. Back in 2010 when I ordered my first Sport the full fat was £20k more and I simply couldn’t afford that additional cost back then. The fact they are still only £20k more shows how that price difference has shrunk. But the image, the feel difference with Sport vs full fat? Full fat is leaps better both in L405 and L460 versions and part of me is baffled why anyone would buy the Sport apart from willing to compromise image and features vs price.

Our 2006 Honda CRV (which we regrettably sold 2 years ago) had not only a hidden compartment in the rear, but also a very decent-sized, and sturdy, fold-away picnic table. The heater/aircon/fan etc. controls were large, tactile, and had a very satisfying wee click when turned. There was space for an easy replacement double din stereo/navi unit. The seats were excellent. It had a 2.4 V-tec engine that had plenty of grunt, was super smooth, and good enough mileage (a bit shit around town but it was our weekend car). Oh yes, and the fold down seats in the back that folded up against the front seats and left a yawning gap of space behind them. It had pearl white paint that looked great. Nice wheels. And never let us down, and we always enjoyed getting into it (it had a tan interior....kinda). A dive shop owner (oh yeah we put a tow bar on it) bought it off us for $NZ8000 with 106K kms. And mint. So....we don't see the value or point of this stupid bloody car. Cool review though Harry!! And thanks for your honesty.
