Been to Harwood’s hole a few times and always wondered what was down there! Great video, very cool to see. The walk there is one of my favourites!

Hi KM, may I ask who your ancestor was? That sounds really interesting. :)

@@JoshuaJohnsonOutdoors Henry Harwood. He went on to own the land the cave was on I believe.

Cool, I went down in 97. My ex - wifes grandad was Arthur Coyle who was an early explorer. I met his wife Ruth a few times. She was a caver too.

Are you able to book a tour to absail down and go thru the caves and back out again?
@JoshuaJohnsonOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Hi there, no. There are currently no commercial tours through the cave that I'm aware of. Your best bet is to join a caving club and build experience and relationships through that, then get someone to take you through it. I'm aware of people that attempted it without the proper experience and skills, and ended up needing rescue. Hope that helps.

Oh ! This is so cool. I went down there and out through Starlight in October 1997. A couple of days later we did a through trip of Nettlebed from ... um ... thingy Pot (sorry, it is the pot) down to ... um ... the bottom ... but, yeah, Harwoods has to be the single most amazing place I've been ... well, that, and the Lost World near Te Kuiti ... oh, and the Pororari River ... and, um ... whatsit called ? ... doh !

But, yeah, I always dreamed of seeing it from just above like that, because you can't really see down from anywhere around it, and you're quite a way down before you're free hanging. I've often thought how cool it would be to film that by drone. It's such an epic cave. Love giant gour dams. My friend Phil was on an ASG trip back in the 70's and was climbing back up with old style Jumars, to find the rope had slipped off the protector and frayed almost right through a few feet above him. He carefully climbed up, pulled up the rope, to loud shouts from below, cut and tied it, then spewed. Big caves are never to be taken too lightly. They can kill you in so many ways.

Hi Steve, thanks for sharing. That sounds like a real adventure. Ive heard Nettle bed, and (I assume) Stormy pot are extraordinary as well!
