Hi Craig, Someone well known to detectorists said the Staffordshire hoard was likely excavated soil from HS2! So if you can’t work out why the hoard is there that might be an answer! 😊

Sorry mate but, the Staffordshire hoard was found 11 years before they started work on HS2

@ Good info glad to be corrected. Might have been another hoard he spoke of then. Keep at it!

No worries, As it happens, I've got all the HS2 archaeological excavations that they carried out

@@WestCountryClegg He was talking about excess soil from the HS2 but the hoard he was talking about was not long ago. So maybe I mis heard when he mentioned Staffordshire.

This is very interesting what you have put together on your research In my younger years, I went metal detecting and searched around by the War of the Roses took place on a hillside by Staffordshire Market Drayton but found nothing of any value.

You've inspired me to download and learn QGIS. And just I learned of our own (U.S.) national LiDAR projects via the USGS. So much fun. Thanks

Yes the programme is quite addictive. You could set up least cost paths between known Indian encampments and American Civil War battlefields because they would have had to of had level ground to transport the cannons

Near where I live there’s an ironage fort and a Roman fort on opposite hills 400 m from one another an old bog and rumour’s of a Saxon settlement close by

I live close to this area, and know it like the back of my hand. The hoard was maybe loot from a recorded raid by the welsh. The area to look is towards the "castle" previously a fortified town from the hoard field, but to be honest, you could travel much further the other way towards wales as the angle from that attack as it does point towards wales, imo once it was mostly moorlands nearer the castle but theres a few trackways from both points. A point to note is that detectorists are fighting over these fields to get the rights for them.
