They are supposed to essentially remain emotionally detached at all costs as it is passionate emotions and their inability to control them which leads them down the dark side of the force. The dark side of the force is predominantly the emotions of hatred and anger and so having physical attachments can lead to having these emotions and thus can lead one to the dark side if they are not careful. This is largely why Anakin was manipulated to the dark side. In Attack of the Clones the first time we see a glimpse of Vader is when Anakin murders the sand people that killed his mother and in Revenge of the Sith Anakin is tempted to the dark side out of a fear that his wife would soon be killed. Even Luke in Return of the Jedi almost succumbed to the dark side when Vader threatened to turn Leia to the dark side if Luke would not turn himself prompting Luke to angrily attack Vader nearly killing him.
