Ranking EVERY SINGLE BIOME in Terraria!

Perhaps ranking everything in this game was a mistake, but it's one I'm apparently okay with making. Like mentioned, I have no current plans for future tier lists, but we may see updated lists after the Journey's End 1.4 update drops. It's been a wild ride!

Honestly, I love the idea of the Temple, and I’d probably rate it S tier if not for its bad execution. There aren’t enough different enemies, it’s not big enough (but I guess it would be sort of hard to make it bigger), there isn’t enough rewards for going there, and there’s not really any replay-ability there. I mean, there is, but there’s no reason to go back after Golem is dead. The idea of a dungeon filled with traps and unique enemies with unique loot and a boss fight at the end is absolutely great in my eyes, but it was poorly executed with the Temple. If the Temple had the variety of enemies and loot of the post-Plantera Dungeon, it would be SO much better than it is now.

The bee biome is really good pre-hardmode. Sadly, if you're not short on potions, don't plan to be a summoner, or don't have appretiation for bees then there's not much to it and it can, in fact, become a hassle. The bee weapon are kinda neat, though. Especially the Beenades.

I think the reason the bee-hive feels so good is because it doesn't feel like a biome. It's a nice little extra to the underground Jungle and really adds to it. Whereas granite/ marble is just a random thing thrown wherever in the world.

I actually like the lack of a corrupted and crimson variant for snow because it gives you a good place to set up shop in the early game without worrying about your builds getting bad touched by the world evils, but the lack of hallow snow doesn’t make sense.

I'm definitely getting a lot of flack for the bee hive placement and I most certainly didn't articulate why I put it there enough, so let me be a little more deliberate about it and hopefully this comment will show up to explain things to peeps (I can't pin it tho so lol) Hives are an example of something that, currently, Terraria is really lacking -- actually cohesive sub-biomes. Marble, Granite, underground tents -- even arguably sword shrines all just feel tacked on and placed into the world without much thought. They don't feel like they mold into the game as much as just "oh this would be cool, put it in. it's there now!" To me, this is a serious fault, especially considering how huge Terraria worlds are. Cohesive sub-biomes are what break up the monotony of the general biome experience and divert your attention to something else interesting and engaging. Hives, in my opinion, do this the best, and my criteria of removing bosses from consideration kind of warped my ability to discuss it, so let's instead give more credence to the Queen Bee /fight/, but not her /drops/. This is one of the few unique scenarios where you are presented with an area to fight the boss in its own territory and uniquely interact with it. I find myself having many times made an arena out of her Hive to battle the boss, and enjoyed the different experience a fair bit (granted it can sometimes be rather small). Thematically, it's one of the best examples of a boss presence in the game. Just like Plantera, you intrude and destroy part of a living structure to then be attacked and punished by a greater nurturing force that resides within. And this is all packed into a small area that, yes, would otherwise just have bees and honey. And that's totally fair, but I also would like to point out that if Hives gave you super huge jolts of gear otherwise that it would be a little bit off. Scale is important here -- it's a sub-biome, so it shouldn't have as much as other major biomes, and the ranking should scale to represent that. I hope this clears up my point. Obviously the tagline "if the biome was removed, what would the game lose" hurts the Hive placement quite a bit, but consider the opportunities if other sub-biomes were more engaging and cohesive like the Hive biome is. I think going underground and exploring would suddenly be a LOT more interesting, personally. Thanks for humoring my bias

under that same logic, where does that place spider biomes again? they dont feel tacked on, and are one of only 2-3 "mini" biomes that feel in place (the last of which is underground glowing mushroom, as they never really get as large as other big biomes). The same way you go to hives for honey and glowing for the truffle npc and duke, you go to spiders for some good summoner items that have their use even outside of the summoner class, an npc, and a renewable web source for furniture and ropes. The only thing hive has over the other 2 is a unique boss, but spider gets closest to matching with a unique enemy with unique interactions (venom), and unlike the hives, spider biomes evolve with hardmode. Out of the 3, spider has the most base value with both an npc and an entire gear set that acts as a pure upgrade to the hive's set that requires farming a boss to make. Honey also is not as big a benefit when with just a few buckets and some more mechanical knowledge, the player can make an infinite liquid machine for it, completely invalidating the need to return for the resource, which is a "problem" spider biomes dont have as they cant be artificially created. Even the wikis suggest spider biomes have value in money farming for the players that are interested and dont have an alternate method set up, which being in its hardmode variant makes it more valuable than hives. I am not disagreeing with your placement of hives, only that you slept on spider biomes which has just as much reason to be comparable.

In terms of the meteor head issue, there is one reason why the meteor head only has drops in hardmode. Once you enter hardmode, you can start farming biome keys, and meteor heads are the least intensive way of farming keys in the early game, and Re-Logic was trying desperately to find a way to lock the biome keys up so people couldn't just sit in one biome and wait, and then get a key, make a B-Line for the dungeon, and unlock the chest and sweep the early hardmode with Vamp Knives, Scourge, rainbow gun, or piranha gun. See, anything that has drops can drop a biome key if it's within the biome in question. Meteorite is a soft biome, meaning that although any biome can become a meteor biome, that biome is still its base biome. The best they could come up with, or at the very least, the one they decided to go forward with, was removing meteor head drops entirely. It had nothing to do with money, it had nothing to do with whatever else the guys in your chat were talking about. It was all about those biome keys and how frustratingly easy they were to get ahold of. Of course, that didn't stop people from using other methods to get what they'd changed to key MOULDS, which had the same drop chance as the keys before them, but required excess temple keys to craft. Of course nowadays you just grab a key, and it says it can't be used without beating Plantera. Only now, Meteor Heads still drop nothing, and there's really no point to even bothering with most of them, besides Vamp Knives.

I personally feel that the overall lack of content in the forest biome is excusable, and maybe even a necessity, because it is essentially the starting area of the game (even though there is a chance to spawn in different biomes). Like Hectique said, it's meant to prepare you for the rest of the game and, over time, teaches you the core mechanics through the Guide and your own experimentation. The fact that there isn't very much depth allows for experimentation without much risk, makes it an ideal place to build houses, and most importantly, doesn't overwhelm the player. Great starting/tutorial sections in games mostly have a less wide variaty of content than other sections, because if the player was fighting bosses and complex enemies before they fully understood the world around them, that would just be too much. What's more, the smaller amount of content it has compared to other biomes alone is an incentive to explore the other parts of the world and find that gear, or content, or just something that's different. To summarize, I think it's a good thing that there isn't as much depth to the forest, making it just enough for the player to get their bearings in the world without shoving to much down their throats early on. (and yes I'm aware the game has a proper tutorial, but this applies to the players first true playthrough)

One thing that makes me mad about space being so empty is the fact the final boss of the game is called the moon Lord. Like c'mon, wouldn't that be a cool post moonlord type deal? A suggestion how to improve the underworld: Once you reach hardmode it begins spreading up like one of the other variant biomes. The whole existence of the wall of flesh, is that it is a sort of keeper of the balance. Keeping good an evil under control. So why the hell, once its killed, shouldn't literal hell go wild and expand as well? It would make so much sense! There could even be an event of sorts where the demons invade the surface world!

There should be a Post-Plantera boss that you fight in the underworld, that drops an item that lets *YOU* be in control of the spread of Hallow/Corruption/Crimson. Like, being able to slow down the speeds, speed them up, make them stop completely. It would be so satisfying to just, eradicate the spread of Crimson/Corruption when it’s eating up the jungle

I agree with that they should've made evil/hallow variants of snow, but I think the jungle not having other variants is iconic, you have to save the jungle from getting corrupt because it's almost impossible to convert back, and the jungle is the heart of nature, when it gets corrupt it makes sense for it to be destroyed instead of convert. with the corruption, I think the long straight holes add to the experience of it being really hard to get to, with crimson you can just walk right in and smash a heart, but with curruption you need to either be really skilled or have good gear and items to get down there, making it impossible for new players to do the space gun combo. with the space biome, I don't really get what you mean, you make floating islands their own biome and then say the space biome doesn't have anything, while the first thing I think about when I hear space biome is the floating islands

Ok no hold on, Forests deserve more credit. Living wood trees are great, they're a surface generated structure that has some neat loot, tons of personality, and fits into the main biome perfectly(and they're even better with 1.4 but that was the future), and enchanted sword shrines are cool, if maybe a bit too subtle and unreliable. Plus, slimes, man! Blue and green and purple and pink slimes! Slimes are iconic. Forests are, like, low A tier minimum. They do what they set out to do perfectly, and they at least beat surface desert.

A while ago my friend wanted me to get into terraria and so I played on a new world he made, both of us starting off at base stats and no equipment. The world was a large one and when we ran across both sides to map it out, we found that A LARGE portion of the map was all Jungle, both the surface and underneath it. This was difficult for MANY reasons because 1) the Dungeon was on that side of the world, 2) the area you fight the Brain of Cthulhu in was also on that side of the world and 3) finding the Jungle Temple was a nightmare that took two or three sessions to find. One thing I wanted to see was a surface mushroom biome so my friend turned THE ENTIRE JUNGLE WHICH TOOK UP ALMOST 50% OF THE SURFACE INTO A MUSHROOM BIOME. I got him back by turning the Forest we lived in into a Hallow; he hates the Hallow’s music.

At 37:10 somebody says vampire knives are better then worm scarf despite being useless on the final boss, useless in expert mode, and you have to farm for it, where the worm scarf is always good and is tied into base progression.

how is the vampire knives useless in expert mode? Also, the worm scarf is easier to get yes but doesn't keep you alive anywhere near as well. Worm Scarf only reduces damage by 10%, vampire knives can keep a player alive forever if they have a high defence and aren't getting hit every 2 seconds.

@@huntersowards3409 Expert mode reduces lifesteal to a trickle, worm scarf is a constant use deal and doesn’t require you to be able to land several knives, (which are a close ranged thing, and your more likely to use them at low health). You only ever use vampire knives when your in trouble and need to heal, but you just end up shoving yourself in harms way to get a measly 5hp. And if your not getting hit every five seconds, just wait to use a potion and stay alive because you effectively have an added 10% health.

@@interdimensionalgoober8769 True, but playing aggressively with vampire knives is kinda dumb anyway, defence builds even in expert truly benefit from their inclusion. Also just use the knives whilst you wait for the potion cooldown, quickly switch on the item that reduces your potion cooldown, heal, then switch off of it and you got the best of both options. Works great for me, just don't get hit overextending for the lifesteal.

Playing super aggressively and getting hit constantly but compensating with life heal ends up just creating a problem with the vampire knives only it’s solve it with them. Plus they’re post plantera, Golem is a cake wall and getting hit by him is rarely a problem you have to deal with, the lunatic cultist is a glorified cutscene, moon lord can spam status effects removing the life steal, and the empress of light is constantly moving around and is dangerous to be near because of that causing contact damage, not to mention her projectiles being super hard to dodge in close quarters.

I really do think that snow and desert need boss fights. Ocean has one, Hallow has two, Corruption and Crimson have one each, Jungle has two if you include the hive, and Forest doesn’t really need one considering that’s where you’ll probably be fighting most of the remaining bosses. As it stands there’s nothing really memorable about the two I mentioned earlier, and that’s a shame.

Underground Crimson/ Corruption is beneficial to the mage class, since there is a mob there that drops a lamp. That lamp is a material used to craft a magic weapon which does good amounts of damage. Surface hallow light mummies also drop a component to the Ankh charm that dark mummies don't from my memory. I may be wrong

The surface Hallow biome is very usefull for keeping your wooden bases safe from corruption or crimson. I can appreciate a biome that keeps my NPC's safe because when ever I enter hardmode I never like building anymore but it completly nullifies the spreading mechanic of the game, which doesn't reward the player enough. I wish the surface hallow was dangerous to your bases but in a different way. Like your NPC's don't get freaked out or attack hallow enemies, but on the contrary, get lured by them outside your base to be killed by a beautiful unicorn.

21:03 I actually like this fact. It means that you simply CANNOT allow the evils to ravage your world. If the jungle had a corrupt/crimson variant, in which you could still do all of the many jungle things, you could just say “Oh, my jungle’s getting corrupted? Eh, whatever, don’t care.” But because of the fact that there are no alts, INSTEAD you have the reaction of “Oh crap, the Corruption is destroying my jungle! I need that!” So, you have to protect the jungle through spreading the Hallow around it (the Hallow won’t destroy the jungle), or construct a barrier gap to stop the evils from destroying your jungle.

I think that every biome belongs in s tier, because they're all special and unique in their own way. It's not fair to judge some these biomes so harshly. Learn to accept them for who they are. Loving your tier lists :)

Not really, half the 'biomes' on the list aren't biomes at all and by the rules of this tierlist shouldn't be any higher than E let alone S. Bee Hives exist SOLELY due to boss fights Meteorite is skippable, it's awesome to use but there are alot of better variants. The Purity / Forest (default) is S-tier by the fact of the content and literally iconic ness of the it being the default with all the content.

Gear aside I always thought that crimson always had far superior design and feel to it. It achieves a feeling that everything around you including the floor is alive, breathing, absorbing your world, and trying to kill you, even the place where you fight the brain is designed to look like a living organ, where the concept behind the corruption is just purple = evil and holes that kill new players.

about your rating on the surface hallow biome i remember first getting into hardmode in a co -op world with a friend. we saw that the dryad was selling hallow seeds. we didnt know what the hallow biome entailed but we knew it was a fantasy like biome, and basically the opposite to crimson. being the kids we were, we though "oh its probably purity but better" and planted them all around our house. then we were surrounded by insta kill unicorns because we didnt have hardmode armor. your review of being goofy horror was 100% how i remember my first hallow experience, and i cant agree more.

I definitely agree when it comes to a lot of these picks and the disappointment that some biomes bring for being ultimately very bland. It's part of the reason I love mods so much, specifically when it comes to the Ocean biome, as a lot of mods make the Ocean a lot more fun (especially the ones like Calamity and Thorium, which add in a deep ocean biome). Fortunately, it seems like a lot of pure biomes are getting some cool stuff for Journey's End. Unfortunately, the ocean seems to have been ignored in this regard. Though I can kind of understand why this is the case, as Ocean's don't really get much space allotted to them, so they generally have to be bland. Which is why I kind of wish we could get an extra large world gen size, which grants that extra space to the ocean itself to allow for ocean sub-biomes. Actually give us a reason for a lot of the water specific items. Edit: You know, I initially thought of an extra large world simply being one with more horizontal distance to enable the Ocean biome and not a vertical size increase, as I wouldn't want to make the underground notably taller... but I realize now that the extra vertical space could be devoted to making the Space biome cooler... so sure, let's go with that.
