So this would be an appropriate time to mention that a Revelations episode on the Jaguar E-Type is something I’ve wanted to see for quite some time now. It was a car that significantly advanced the state of the art in sports cars for its time. I mean, a semi-monocoque chassis with disc brakes and independent suspension at all four corners and a twin-cam inline six just landed on the scene back when Ferraris had live axles and space frames and the typical Porsche used drum brakes and pushrod four cylinders. I think it fits the theme. Plus you’d get to spend some time staring at an E-Type, and that’s not a bad way to pass a few hours.

So you get Festival of Speed, Goodwood Revival, BTCC, Historic F1, Formula Ford Festival and Porsche shows etc.. We also have the British Motor Museum about 1.5 hours away. The South of England really is a bit of a motoring mecca.. Plus a shit tonne of windy country roads to blast around. Can't go wrong really.

I suspect the Ferrari 250 GTO you saw was Nick Masons's, the drummer of Pink Floyd. He purchased it in 1977 for GBP 37,000 ($44,000). He has 250GTO license plate. Races the hell out of it, he is a legend.

@craigykart2 ай бұрын
It's not the Nick Mason GTO, although that is at goodwood all the time. The one Damon's driving in the video is owned by Anthony Bamford (owner of the JCB construction machinery firm - it even has a little JCB sticker on it, as do all the family cars). Damon's dad Graham Hill (both of them won the F1 driver's championships) drove this exact 250GTO in the 1960s so this is nicely circular.

The first problem with an all electric mail truck fleet that occurs to me is charging. That's an awful lot of electric capacity to recharge all of the trucks every day. Fucking excellent chat.
@matthewpeterson33292 ай бұрын
I've been a part of design teams working on government contracts. There is a reason that new Oshkosh mail truck is so ugly. Uncle Sam gives you a list of must-have specs and the team that checks the most boxes AND has the best price wins the contract. It's more specific than that, but that is basically how it works. So they likely had a front visibility requirement, as well as a bunch of other needs, and sometimes the only way to give them everything they want results in a fugly-ass product. To change the looks would likely mean the inability to physically provide a requirement.
@jeremiahcurry48752 ай бұрын
It is strange to me that the discussion about the new mail trucks was "should we go gas or electric". Hybrids seem like the perfect solution for a mail truck, garbage truck, etc. Any vehicle that is constantly switching between accelerating to the next house and braking for the current one would be ideal for regenerative braking. But it would still have the range to get to far-flung neighborhoods if needed. And the technology is very reliable now.

I am totally confused at to why the American post needs specialist vans built by the defence industry of all people. Here in the UK the Royal Mail just buys Transits. Italy uses Pandas, presumably Deutsche Post uses Sacco-era 190es or something. Why not just buy something vaguely domestic off the shelf?
@hduncan25872 ай бұрын
Regarding the traffic and classic cultures here versus England... we're more instant gratification and impatience, I'd say. Though there is the odd 240Z or MG running around, but more often the "classics" have become more like the '70's and '80's. Throw restomods into the mix, and again it makes the classic car scene a little bit easier to deal with. Though I must admit, I do like the 1954 Kaiser with presumably Catfish-Camaro (going off gauges) LS swap and IRS/inboard brake setup in our inventory (aside from the trashy looking Cadillac XLR wheels ruining it). Way different to yet another Bel Air....

The Nick Mason 250GTO is original but the engine it races with is a copy made by Crosthwaite & Gardiner. Nick Mason's take on bodywork damage to his car is "it's a racing car, and it's worth enough to fix when it gets dings". A lot of the goodwood entrants are rich enough to behave like this -- they have enough dough to repair anything and the industry exists in the UK to fix anything.
