I listened to the song from ‘Metallica’s KZbin Channel. I’ve seen a lot of people commenting that the vocals were never like that. Maybe they were changed in the remaster? Either way, still a really great song, just wasn’t keen on the vocal effects

I petition for Metallica Mondays! With that being said, Metallica does everything for a reason. For this song you have to understand the subject matter of the message of this song. Usually when Metallica warps the sound of the guitars or the vocals it’s because in that phrase or that measure he is talking about or pointing out a warped sense of reality or understanding. In this case he’s talking about how the justice system is rigged and warped in favor of corrupt politicians etc. they have a warped sense of reality and that’s why those verses are warped. Same with Leper Messiah.

Yeah, I am a mixing engineer and what I think is going on is what you said - a double tracked vocal with one side out of phase and I also think there is a third vocal layer buried in the mix where James (or whomever) is whispering the vocal lines. You can hear it peek in and out slightly if you listen on good cans. Not sure why folks are saying it isn't on the OG track though because I own the OG vinyl and it is on it but I think there is some kind of weird compression and maybe bitrate distortion artifacts going on with the digital upload that pronounces it and maybe not in the best way because I am listening to both right now and they are noticeably different

He has a very light chorus effect on his vocals. its the same effect you see on Metallica's 'clean' guitar parts: it gives a more literally metallic sound to the guitar. On vocals it has the effect you've noticed. Some extreme metal bands use that same effect to make their harsh vocals harsher artificially.
@metler76428 ай бұрын
This is one of their phatest tracks, the riffs, solo and double kicks are delectable. My guess on why his vocals sound underwater, would be that it represents being drowned out, like in their track 'Trapped Under Ice'. Don't worry, once you get used to it you don't really notice it.

There was a studio modulation affect on the vocals in the verses to thicken the sound (chorus or flanger style). The goal is to change the tone to sound a little thicker and sound other worldly. It’s generally a subtle effect but maybe with decent headphones it’s more obvious? 🤷

James does have a flanger on his voice during the verse. He was inspired by Killing Joke’s song “The Wait” to apply that effect to his vocals. In fact, Metallica covered this Killing Joke tune on…*Garage Days, Revisited*, IIRC, which I may not.The flanger is even more egregious in the Killing Joke tune, but it rather works for them, as they were this great experiment in combining hardcore punk rock with acid-inspired synth-pop and hypnotic tribal rhythms.

I always dug this one, but I also heard it when it was new in 1988, so maybe it being so different and new at the time helped me appreciate it? lol We also used to play this one in my band, so I am also fond of it for that. Yeah, it is some sort of flange effect on the vocals during certain parts. I do know that this song is Lars's least favorite Metallica song because of the odd alternating time signatures. They haven't played it live in its entirety since the Damaged Justice Tour in 1989.
