Historians have quite a hard job. Cataloging history objectively can be hard. Especially when the King of Korea wants to chop your head off for it.

When the king asked the chroniclers if he could have a peak on those Sacho, those chroniclers will politely refuse, and then *write down the fact that the king was turned down from reading the Sacho* on that same Sacho. The record survived because the Sillok had four separate backups in four distant mountains all across Joseon. The closest call was during the Imjin War when all but one backup copy was destroyed. One of the editor of Silok in King Taejong (Yes, the same guy who fell from the horseback) era, Insaeng Min, almost went to the stalker level. He followed king even when he’s going for private places, and when rejected to follow, he hid / disguised and followed him anyway. There is at least 4 entries in Silok where the king or Insaeng's college complain about his obsession. The king laid him off eventually (about 4 months he was hired). The king seemed to be so traumatized, that when discussing about to what extent will historians record things, he mentioned “that creepy guy who peeps and stalks”. YES, this story is also recorded on Silok, and YES the king saying “creepy guy” is also on Silok.

Queen Maebh and King of Ulster fighting a war over a bull. All the warriors were cursed with the pain of childbirth, except for the Incredible Irish Hulk, Cú Chulainn. What's so special about that bull? It used to be a pig farmer who picked a fight with another pig farmer. Both transfigurated into various animals, eventually turning into two worms who were swallowed by two cows and they were reborn as two bulls. The full story goes on a lot longer, but to sum it up, it was a wealth dispute as owning the magical bull would make the owner the richest of the land. Irish mythology characters can give the Greek mythology gods a run for their money with their shenanigans.

Education Minister Yu Ji said "There are many Ghosts in the castle. There are ghosts in Prime Minister Chung Chang-son's house. They carry belongings in the house, and they appear in broad daylight and talk and eat food." Then the king asked from side to side, and Hong Eung answered, "In the past, a rat came out of Yue Mun-chung's house and stood there bowing to him, and the housekeeper felt strange and told him, 'This is to starve and seek food. Spread the rice.' When the owl came into the house, it was not considered strange either, but there was no disaster in the house at last. If you don't feel strange even when you see ghosts, there will be no disaster on your own. Jeong Chang-son's house is mysterious, so his wife asked him to move to avoid it, but Jeong Chang-son said, 'I'm old, so even if I die, how can I avoid it because of ghosts?' and there was no disaster at last." And the king said, "What is strange enough for an owl to cry about in the world or always in the trees of the court? Ghosts disappears on its own when it gets old." Even as a Korean I didn't know my people recorded history so well that everything is basically 100% factual since there are zero bias and you can learn what each king did from their embarrassing moments, atrocities, kindness, hedonism, greed, etc. I mean, they even recorded a King who fell down a horse. Something most nations would never record since they want their leaders to be seen as flawless and perfect. Kinda how most things we know about Rome were wrong cause we took a fanfic that survived for decates as "historical evidence." Such as, we learned that Romans wore different armors depending on the Ceasar and time period. Or that gladiators were a sport until that one mad man turned it into the blood sport we know in media.

Roman history is even worse because contemporary writers were incredibly biased and oftentimes rumor or propaganda was recorded as fact. Thats' why there's so many seemingly insane Roman rulers. They were probably average or even good rulers who ended up deposed/assassinated and the new Emperor was like "Hey Buttonholius the Eldar, write a history about how my predecessor raped cats".

@falkyrie5228 22 күн бұрын
Slow down, lil bro. It's still not 100% accurate, nothing ever is. The historian who wrote it down might have been biased, and since no one could read it to fact check him, his version is what survived. Besides, there were 4 copies of these records, we just have the one that survived. There is no saying that whoever was tasked with copying the original document didn't change stuff. It's still an amazing feat and probably more accurate than most other historical documents, but it's definitely not 100% accurate.

500 years of records of a single dynasty, and all of it has survived to today? That has to be one of the greatest accomplishments in all of historical record keeping, if not the greatest.

More like a dictionary. Korean Wikipedia would be Diaries of the Royal Secretariat. In the diaries, the secretariat recorded every single thing that happened every day, every hour. Because it's so detailed and long, the diaries are not even completely deciphered. The diary is so detailed that it's seven times longer than the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty(which is shown in this video).

you have to consider that king Taejong is one of the most cruelest king in Korean history. He even exiled his father, king Teajo, the founder of Joseon(also Taejo is one of the best general in Korea), and killed his brothers to get throne. and Korean historian :

There were multiple historians, and those historians had ranks. Superior officers would supervise their subordinates. Be aware: to be a member of any branches of Korean beaucracy, you first had to take and pass the imperial exam(other states would simply grant the job based on your wealth, family...etc). One even lost a status of noblemen if a house failed to produce a beaucrat for three generations(commoners were also eligible to take the exam, so there were constant supply of exam takers). This high competition meant that the members of the court, including the historians, were highly professional and effective at doing their work. (and they were very corrupt)

The Rhee(= Le, Li, Ri) family of the Joseon Dynasty, who migrated to Silla and Goryeo, were Chinese who tried to falsify a lot of history books of original Korean, so when they created a dynasty, they were obsessed with creating a lot of records because they were afraid by the historical falsification they had done before. The detailed recording culture of the Joseon kings actually comes from the pre-dynastiy tradition of historical falsification behavior of the Rhee family.😅

Fun fact: The historian who recorded King Taejong's request not to write the fact he fell from a horse was so obsessed with recording that he would literally stalk the king, disguising himself to follow the king to the hunt, hiding behind a folding screen to eavesdrop, trying to enter the king's bedroom, etc. Once he finally succeeded in sneaking into the king's living quarters, it was the last straw for the king, so he was fired and exiled. True story.

Sacho literally means draft, so after main silok is done, all the papers that sacho wrote on were washed to be re-used. Paper at that time was more like fiber so that it can be washed and not that cheap material. That clean-up ceremony is called ‘Secho’, literally means washing up Sacho.
