I love city life and Texas type characteristics in towns. The pricing is a huge deterrent. Might give it a chance to see if it's snotty hipsters with money.

The prices in this video are so depressing. I don't know how any of us are ever expected to be able to own a home. It's getting impossible to even rent too. Normally I love your house hunting vids, but seeing a house literally unsafe to be in without masks due to mold selling for 800k is the most depressing thing I may have ever seen.

@@SusieDickson I'm in a nice suburb in IL (St Charles), and I feel the same way. My 630-square-foot apartment (outdated appliances) is $1,460 a month. I tried going to Schaumburg and the same size one-bedroom apartments are going between $1,600 and $1,800.

I am wholly against Communism and the Chinese government, but I saw them doing something recently which shined a big giant light on our problem. You only buy the house you live in. It is to be a home and not an investment. They stopped the Chinese people from buying multiple homes as investments when it drove up real estate prices. Real estate values/prices go up way more than wages. This means that for every generation the opportunity to buy a home decreases. It is unattainable. Only a little more than half of all Americans own their own homes (64%) but some own multiple homes as investment properties to profit off the nearly 40% who don't. In the USA, it is set up so that the rich gets richer, the poor get poorer and we no longer really have a middle class. For too many the dream of owning their own home is out of reach.

I live in Austin. She is looking at houses close to downtown, which are definitely extremely expensive. If you look in the areas around Austin like Round Rock, Georgetown, Leander, Manor, Cedar Park, prices are much more affordable and the homes are nice.

I've lived in ATX my entire life and I'm 31 and will probably never be able to buy a home here. It's super depressing to see investors come in and make it impossible for people who grew up here having to look for other places to live. It's seriously sad.

As someone who’s lived in Texas their whole life I’m so angry at the housing market. People moving here who flip houses and pushing out TEXANS who can’t even afford to live in their neighborhoods anymore because taxes have shot through the roof. Not to mention all the Airbnb’s and companies buying houses and flipping them. Apartments in Dallas were 500 dollars 13 years ago and now my friend in her apartment pays 1750 for a one bedroom. The renting and housing market is creating a lot of homeless Texans. This isn’t ok. I don’t care what anyone says.

I love watching a good flip story, but the big investors flipping multiple houses are contributing to the housing crisis. I’m a nurse, my husband is a supervisor at a foundry and we couldn’t afford to buy in our neighborhood now. I don’t know how anyone in their 20’s or 30’s can do it.

I would look for a large lot or land. Survey and split it. I would then list the other lot at 75% of what you paid for all of it. I would look into alternative building methods (3d printed concrete or sips panels)to save on construction costs.

Not only would it take a very long time to complete, but it'd be more than the down payment on a single house. It might be cheaper than trying to compete with an all-cash offer but that's not exactly going to be helpful for the people who are getting crunched by this housing market who probably can't afford to do what you are suggesting they do. The only people doing it are already pretty wealthy, business owners, or are full time developers. At least if you're talking anywhere within driving distance of a major metro area. ime.

I totally understand the anger of those people who have lived in Austin/Texas since childhood and are now finding that they're priced out of the housing market. The very same happened in London (UK) when foreign buyers were clamouring to buy property there. It resulted in born and bred Londoners not being able to afford a property. Now it's spilling into the beautiful countryside. Villages/hamlets are seeing a huge raise in house prices as those people (who snapped up the London properties) have sold up and want to relocate to the countryside. Anyhoooooo, I loved the querky house no. 2. It's like a house out of a fairytale story, with all the odd and wonderful nooks and crannies AND the spiral staircase. I really liked this one 😊😍 I hope you do more of these, they're so enjoyable. Love ya loads 💗💗💗

Same thing has happened here in Vancouver. Vancouver is so expensive now, it's pushing up housing prices throughout southwest British Columbia, into lots of places where the crazy housing prices don't match up with local incomes at all.

@@natatatt Exactly! Local people who just want to buy a house, have very little chance of doing so. Then the renting sector started putting their prices up too!!! I know it's the first law in economics (supply and demand) but it's gone beyond ridiculous. Young people, literally cannot afford to rent or buy, as wages haven't increased in the same way. My son was paying more in rent than the monthly mortgage payments I was paying! As inflation rises, and it will (because of the impact we will feel due to the Russia/Ukraine situation), there's a high chance house prices will HAVE to fall. Unfortunately, that will result in so many people having negative equity connected to their homes.

It’s happening everywhere. I live in a medium sized town in Oregon and the place I rented when I first moved out 10 years ago is more than double the price now. I feel terrible for everyone trying to move out for the first time and just being stuck, never really being able to do much with their life because they’re trapped paying high rent or having to help their parents with rent because it’s all just too much all of a sudden. Fast food places here pay 14-17 to start and it still isn’t enough. Only the super lucky or strong willed will be able to make something of themselves here.

It's nuts! My brother purchased a home for $550K for his family in 2015. The same builds are now going for $750K starting prices. Plus with the market, you have to go into bidding wars so it ends up being at least $50K over asking.

Been living in Austin for almost a decade and I'm at the point where I can't wait to leave. The I-35 traffic, elitism, and cost of living is not worth it to me anymore. My PCP, who's married to another doctor, recently moved out of state because she couldn't afford a house. If two doctors can't afford to live here, what hope does a teacher have of ever owning a home? The only thing I'll miss here are my students and HEB, LOL.

Same. I actually moved (returned) to MN this month after 8 years in Austin. I left MN because of the frigid temps and snow, and would never have believed in a million years that I’d choose to move back. But for all the reasons you mentioned, it wasn’t worth it to stay in Austin. Maybe if I was a multi-millionaire I’d feel differently. It’s not just Austin anymore either. Remember when Pflugerville, Round Rock, Leander, Georgetown and Liberty Hill were considered the end of the earth and were affordable? Those days are gone.

The housing market is crazy everywhere. My mom lived in a suburb of Seattle. After she passed away in 2019, we put the house on the market for $600K. It’s an early 1970’s house with no updates. In less than 24 hours, it got over a thousand views on Zillow. By the weekend (even before the showings), we had over 300 offers. We ended up whittling the offers down to 47. When it finally sold, it was for $760K, all cash. This past winter, the buyer remodeled it and it’s now pending for $1.15M. This is a small house, only 1,500 sq ft. I still can’t wrap my brain around this.

It's a bubble which means prices aren't supported by the fundamentals in the market. Eventually the bubble will break. As to when, Idk. My best guess is, sometime in the next 5 years...but I'm not a realtor. Some properties will retain value, but most won't. And investors are buying up properties to rent, not to live in. I wouldn't want rental property myself because I don't want to take the risk of destructive renters. But a lot of people do want rental property.

@@denverdubois5835 we are guessing foreign investors. A lot of Chinese and Russian investors on the West Coast, particularly in our area. They know there are a lot of tech companies here with workers who will fork out the money for a house. The neighbor next door is former Microsoft.

I was born and raised in Austin, and it’s so sad to see the market like this. The gap between wage and cost of living is absolutely insane. Everyone who I grew up with have had to buy houses on the outskirts of the city in areas like Buda. Minimum wage in Austin is still $7.25, and houses are comparable to LA pricing. Traffic is also horrendous. The infrastructure was not built to hold the amount of people pouring into it.

I have been in Buda for 30+ years and the prices here now are insane! And so many houses (like in Austin) are not worth the prices people are paying. Just not the same. And traffic is a whole other conversation! The infrastructure has definitely not kept up with the growth. And unfortunately there is not any real plans coming to correct that problem. Also supply of water is a real issue because there is a limited supply in Central Texas. Water sources are limited and drought conditions are common.

The market is insane everywhere. Wages aren't offering enough money for people to buy houses, and combined with a thousand other factors, people are getting priced out of their own communities. When I see cute little starter homes purchased, and immediately flipped and rented out by investors - I definitely get pretty freaking angry. It's happening in my city too - so many people I know have resigned to never being able to buy a house unless the market crashes again. I was lucky enough to buy a fixer upper from family, but most people my age that I know (late 20s - early 30s) haven't been so lucky. I have a good job as an engineer, but the market is extremely unrealistic and investors are making it so much worse.

I never “hate watch” but as an Austinite it’s so personal and I couldn’t not watch. This is exactly what has and continues to destroy how cool and affordable Austin actually was. Affordable housing is nonexistent in Austin. Property taxes are now killing my friends that bought decades ago in affordable neighborhoods like ‘04 and Cherrywood (any and all of central Austin basically). If they sold they still wouldn’t be able to afford another home without moving much farther out. Don’t even get me started on how those that can afford this depend on the service industry yet the service industry can’t afford to live here.

I think it’s less people moving in and more the investors and house flippers. People moving in are changing their locations permanently so they’re only buying one house and then staying there for 15-30 yrs. But the investors buying vacay rentals and house flippers buying dozens of properties and reselling with the higher market price are what’s jacking up the price. California’s had this issue for decades now. The uber rich want one or multiple vacay houses that don’t have permanent tenants/sit empty for weeks at a time even though we have a huge population of homeless people and/or people on the verge of homelessness. There’s a reason why in recent years, vacay rentals have to be your permanent residence. Seems like government oversight, but w/o the law, locals get priced out.

It's mainly Austin! I'm priced out of Austin (homes that used to be $300-500K are now $750K starting price in Austin). But if you travel 10 minutes outside of Austin to Buda or Kyle, it's back to "normal" TX prices. The big cities in Texas are having major issues now though, the market is nuts and people are being priced out. It's really sad :/

Prices are not normal Texas prices. All Texas prices are high and for most people owning a home is becoming unattainable. That is sad.

No one can afford $1M home prices in CA, we hate it. Housing prices in the Austin area and suburbs are just insane! We bought our 4 bedroom 2000 sq foot house in the most desired subdivision at the time (Plum Creek in Kyle) back in 2009 post housing market crash. We paid $127,000. At the time we only had just gotten a new H‑E‑B in kyle at there was nothing much else in town. Over the last 12 years The Kyle-Buda area has grown at an insane rate. As of late (our house is not even in the market) my husband and I get dozens of random phone calls a day from investors making cash offers on our home and our mailbox fills up with similar offers in letter form. Most of these offers are in the $650k-$800k range. This seems absurd to me because we really do just have a “regular middle class” house. We would never sell because we are the kind of people that just aren’t into moving but jeez. My moms rent on a newer 1 bedroom apartment in Kyle went up to $1850 per month when she renewed her lease in January. I have no idea how anyone in their 20s or 30s is even affording a “starter home” right now as the investors seem to be buying up everything. As working college new grads $127k felt like a lot for us back in 2009. I truly feel for first time home buyers right now. The Austin metro is an amazing place to live BUT I fear the middle class will be priced out at some point.

I work for a homeless shelter in a very small city/large town and the prices of apartments are so high it’s adding to the homeless problem. Normal people can’t afford houses in my are any more. Hopefully,that changes eventually or here’s going to be some major problems.

Yeah, I’m not so worried about the people getting outbid on $500k+ homes. Boo-hoo. I worry about the people barely scraping by but working their butts off, trying to survive, and can’t even afford a small apartment now. I make good money and wouldn’t pay what these weasels are asking for in rent. Many of them, I know they’ve owned these properties for years! So I’m wondering why are they doubling their rent when what they’re putting into it hasn’t gone up?? Greedy and taking advantage of the situation. It’s so sad.

This is exactly what's going on in my small town of Sault Ste. Marie. Houses normally would average 100,000 - 250,000 and now they are up to 300,000 - 500,000 for the same houses. Its insane and super discouraging. I hope things calm down a bit by the time I'm ready to buy!

I lived in Austin for a few years and unfortunately had to leave in 2018. My rent was about to go up by a few hundred dollars, yet companies still pay as if the cost of living is low. I feel for the locals who’ve been pushed out. Austin has really lost its charm.

Yes, I live in Austin now, and adults are moving home, or whole families will live together just to make ends meet, or they have to have three or more jobs to buy an "average" priced house, and those can't be found anymore. If you can afford your house, the house taxes might kill you because of all of the building going on these days.

I live in Nashville and it's starting to be the same way. Locals can't afford anything in the city anymore. Houses get all cash offers way over asking. Developers try to buy everything off market so there's not enough inventory. I finally bought a house 6 months ago after trying for a year, I'm already getting calls and texts from developers wanting to buy it!

I live north of you in Clarksville and I get calls every day from investors wanting to buy my house. My husband and I bought our home in 2004 for 108k, both of us in our early 20s. 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1800 sq ft on .4 acre. Our home is now worth over 3 times what we bought it for, it's insane. We wouldn't be able to afford it if we tried to by it now, and I am sad that people in their early 20s now won't get the same opportunities that we had.

I grew up in Austin and recently moved away just prior to the pandemic. I appreciate you showing the crazy housing market, but it's been this way for a few years. I think you missed the mark, but did your best after just being there a few weeks. The problem is, while the suburbs might be "20 minutes away" from downtown, the traffic will take you forever to get anywhere. I lived less than 10 miles from downtown, and it would take approx 30 minutes to get to work in the morning with light traffic, and it would often take an hour or more to get home. I wouldn't even take I35! You'll be pressed to find a time where there's no traffic in Austin, even on the weekends. Also, there was a huge problem with the water reservoirs/lake levels already several years ago, and with all of the highrises and continued development, I don't know how the city will be able to sustain the population with resources, roads, etc I wish people would stop moving to Texas :( Austin definitely isn't what it was and it keeps becoming commercialized. I hope a lot of you got to experience it 10+ years ago and got to get a real feel of the city

It's the same here in Spokane (and even western Idaho). So difficult to buy homes right now with everyone coming and paying well over asking with cash. Houses are on the market for a couple days then get snatched up. I love watching you do these videos and seeing what different price points can get you around the US!

I don't mean to sound unwelcoming of new people coming to Austin, or that I'm afraid of change, or anything like that, but I want people like Taylor and her followers to understand that this is a real problem that affects real people's lives. It's not just inflation, which I understand is a global issue right now, or a housing market frenzy... It's also a cultural transformation we've experienced in Austin. It feels like the new crowd is more focused on "keeping up with the Joneses" rather than developing and nurturing genuine creativity and kindness. I went to school here, learned to navigate the adult world here, met and married the love of my life here. To see so many places where we've built amazing memories get torn down for the next hip brunch spot is heartbreaking. This place no longer feels like home to me...

As a new home owner, I’ve become super interested in the housing market. I know cost of living and attraction to the city is a huge factor for people but it still amazes me that there is such a cost difference. In the first house, the “fixer upper”, when you said the price tag of $750,000 was because of the land (0.2 acres) my mind was blown! I just bought my house for $175,000 with 0.25 acres move in ready and remodeled in Louisiana.

The housing market is the same way here in Knoxville, TN. I think we are in the top 5 fastest growing cities. We have had such a huge influx of people moving here that the housing market is insane (I just went through selling and buying a house last year, it was a very stressful, crazy process). Those cookie cutter neighborhoods are popping up let and right, and in some crazy places. They are all right on top of each other and look exactly the same. Our schools are overcrowded, and traffic.. Oy it's miserable. It can take 30 mins to get 3 miles. Insane.

Oh my gosh! This reminds me SO much of Seattle. I went from Capitol Hill in the late aughts to the Central District to Seward Park this last year. The new builds you showed look identical to what we’re seeing here and the funky remodels are identical to Seward where Boeing created a housing boom in the 50’s and 60’s. I love MCM architecture so this is for sure the area I want to stay in in Seattle but love seeing what other areas in the USA offer comparatively. Keep making these vid’s!

I love seeing videos on houses and housing markets in different cities! It is so crazy how expensive the housing market has gotten everywhere though 😫 in KC our housing market is still comparably cheaper than most others, but has still risen SO much! Our house we bought in 2017 for 120k was now appraised at 250k last year 😅 probably even a little more now that we've done some more updates to it. Holding onto this house as long as we can, because we know it's going to be pricey to upgrade in the future 🤞 I can't wait to see your next house video in a new city!!

I kind of wish this series also showed several houses at the same price point in different areas. The reality is that many people won't have a $1+ M budget for a house so they'll look for either a smaller house or a nice neighborhood farther outside the city. These houses are extremely close in downtown Austin which is going to drive up the price in a way that isn't realistic for many.

I have lived in Texas all my life. The housing market use to be reasonable, now it is definitely a sellers market. Austin, has had so much growth ..have you thought about a townhome or look at Marble Falls or Dripping Springs. Since you work from home you can always drive in for the restaurants, shops, etc. you are aware of the Texas humidity in the summer, very hot!

We bought in Austin earlier this year and went with the method of only looking at listings older than a few weeks - it cut out a lot of the insane bid wars but meant something was "off" about it (old, needs repairs, priced too high etc). We got something that needs a little TLC but in the middle of our budget so we'd have the cash to do repairs, so a fixer upper in a neighborhood we like. It was stressful but way less stressful than dealing with houses with dozens of bids and we were able to negotiate off list price given the repairs needed.

I would choose the third. You can always add beautiful touches, but the bones are great and clean and strong. The turf and retaining wall are expensive and the rooftop deck is a great view (I love our rooftop deck).

I’m in NJ and it’s the same here, it’s not just Austin. Being in the tri state area puts you at that advantage of being close to NY but also close to parks and beaches and mountains. Very desirable schools. I’d never leave here.
