Nice one. Having rebuilt these several times on my own cars, I would be checking the heat exchanger off the top of the block (as you mentioned) before getting into big money rebuilds. They can fail internally and give intermix, had this on a friends car, so it does happen. Easy to test, take it off and pressure test each side. One other thing, the peewee stock turbos dont have wastegates, they arent internally gated.. The Variable Turbine lark takes care of boost amount, but it does create a lot of heat so Garretts or Xona with wastegates are a good option if your building it
@richardquillen84682 жыл бұрын
Looking good! These are rock-solid engines so I'm not surprised there's not anything catastrophically broken. My guess is with the bigger turbos, it lifted a head and trashed the gasket.
@alangil402 жыл бұрын
Given that the engine starts and runs smoothly with no knocking or piston slapping sounds and also given the fact there is no metal in the filter, I would guess its just a head gasket or oil cooler and/or blown turbo. It’s become increasingly clear that the oil leak it not happening with the combustion chambers of this engine, but in one of the ancillary sub assemblies, like the turbos. Cut a chunk out of the filter cartridge about 2 inches square and put it in the vice. Squeeze it out and the open the paper. Now inspect the medium. It much easier to see the contaminants and identify copper, aluminum and ferrous metal.

I'm late to this channel as youtube just recommended to to me so I'm having to catch up. Those Mezger engines that ran into the water cooling era are just awesome. Just think that the core of that design goes back to 1963 with a 2.0L engine and by the end of the decade two of them were modified and joined to power the Porsche 917. Amazing. Then other breakthroughs like Nikasil that made displacement increases possible and soon thereafter turbocharging. Then later developed onto the Porsche 959 engine and into the 996 and 997 GT and Turbo engines. What a run of engineering development. For a DIY type of owner that engine is a gem and never to be seen again.

I'm a 911 turbo owner and build some for other as well. My guess is the oil cooler. Also would say the vgt turbo is shot and that's what causes your oil in the intercooler hose. When rebuilding, make sure you get the sharkwerks aluminum coolant like and pin or weld the rest of them. Pin the cams as well. If opening up, rods and 12mm head studs are the only real musts for hitting 1000whp. Turbo wise, something it's super fast spool and big power I'd suggest looking at is the xona 5756 with the uhf turbine wheels. They will do 750whp on pump and up to 1000whp on e85. Also port the factory heads if rebuilding. Pick up a bunch of flow there. I've done a few sets of them. Also when you remove the oil tank drain bolt you NEED to use a 27mm open ended wrench for counter torque! It's so easy for that to twist the tank and rip it which then requires it to be replaced. The turbo studs will commonly break even after just 6 months of use. It's best practice to always plan on replacing them with new studs each time. Some oil going past the turbo and into the intercooler hosing is normal on these as well. But what you had was excessive. Consider running ngk 4853 plugs...one step cooler than stock and great for the mods you're doing.

3 things come to mind. Turbo failure, valve guides hardened from heat and worn, or cylinder on right bank is aluminum silica and scored, or bore has worn through silica coating on aluminum bore. Another is the oil cooler has failed and is leaking coolant into the oil. What was that a big slug of in the oil when you first pulled the oil plug from the dry sump tank, at the bottom? Obviously heavier than the motor oil, that it collected at the bottom. My limited experience with German cars is leave everything stock, even the turbos. It will greatly increase the resale value. Changing things to make more power will lead to creating more problems in other areas of the drive line. Porsche engineers do a great job of integrating the engineering of all the sum of the parts into one workable integral package.

Now it’s up to AIM performance to add another few hundred Hp!

@@scraplifegarage I'd say replacement of both turbos, and replacement of oil cooler, where the unit exchanges hot oil with engine and radiator coolant would be my first steps. Might just be a bad cartridge from not letting the turbo's cool down before shutting down the engine, coking up the oil slinger seals. Very important with the amount of heat that engine can make with the HP it produces, to idle down to let the turbos cool off for 4 or 5 minutes before shut down. Or just don't romp on it the last 5 minutes of driving before you shut down. very important to run a good Mobil 1 full synthetic Porsche rated motor oil in those engines. PAO Group IV based, no group III synthetics. Just don't have another Paul Taylor Carrera GT incident. No passengers, no free rides.

In the beginning of the video when you were dropping parts from underneath the car...take 10 minutes of time to remove the bumper, heat shield, and tail lights next time. It's so extremely quick and easy to do and makes working on anything that much easier.

No LS motor please. Keep her a Porsche 997 turbo please. Refresh engine and keep her close to stock. Save the 997's generation.🙏 That's the best model in my book.🙏

Honestly from the leakdown test, the engine is probably in good shape. Anything under 10% is considered gravy, 4% is great. Given that info, I hope option 1 materializes. As much as I like LS swaps, I feel like it would be a shame with this car. Also, subbed, this is the first video I watched (along with the previous Porsche video) and I like your content. Hope you blow up man, you deserve way more than 17.4k subs

That’s going to be handled by aim so it won’t be filmed in AS great of detail but it’s one thing I need to have the pros do

By no means the same car or the same extensive troubleshooting....but I had a 1.8t Passat show the exact same symptoms. Thought something was blown. Ended up being the cheaply built, thin metal oil cooler causing the oil-coolant mix. Replaced it, flushed, re added fluids and sent it. Then again...it was just a VW. Hopefully that's all it is for you guys too!

Totally possible and honestly, fairy likely. BUT I’m not comfortable chancing the bearings after having that run through it on a car making power. If it was a DD like your case, I’d of sent it!

16:01 I had the same issue on my air cooled turbo, both the intake side and exhaust side. There is a video coming next week on my channel about what I found as this kind of leak is rarely bad turbo seals. Looks like my problem is a scavenge pump issue backflowing into the turbo drain. Good video! I think you should rebuild what you got and make it stock again. Love the look of the '05- up 911. Thanks for sharing!
