Please revisit "How Far Will a Shotgun Kill" at 600 yards with slugs. Get a rifled, scoped slug gun as well as a more common smoothbore for the test. I'm sure slugs are likely still lethal at that range, but hitting anything at that range might be an exercise in futility.

@wildrangeringreen2 жыл бұрын
over 2 miles, army tested out at Sandy Hook it in 1879. Bullets hit nose first (indicating they were stable) and went through several inches of pine (boards, not flimsy plywood) before burying themselves 3-6" into the sand. The US was interested in the effectiveness of extreme range infantry fire, after reports of it occurring in the Russo-Turkish war I don't believe 50-70-450 was ever tested that far, but I believe it was tested at 1000, and performed spectacularly. 500SW is ballistically similar to BP 50-70. Even the old, large caliber, inefficient projectile P1851(.70) and P1853 (.58) rifle-muskets were capable of delivering lethal hits on war-horses at 800 and 500m, as was demonstrated at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854. A regiment of Infantry rendered a regiment of charging Russian Cavalry combat-ineffective before they could even reach them. In that same war, light infantry directly engaged Russian Artillery batteries, forcing them to withdraw on several occasions. People really tend to underestimate the lethality of guns (including airguns), it's why I laugh when politicians require cartridges like .45-70 to be used for hunting in areas with higher population density, claiming "they're safer" than light cartridges like .30wcf lol. 150gr .30wcf may have the higher muzzle velocity (making it easier to hit what you're shooting at), but it's nowhere nearly as likely to go 800 yards, go through the exterior of a house, along with several interior walls, and kill ol' granny smith as something like .45-70-500 will.

Ok..I rarely comment on IV8888 Vids..I do watch them all.. but THIS one has my curiosity. REQUEST: This cartridge on a full length bolt gun 22-24" barrel. VERY Curious of repeatable accuracy in the 300-500 yard range. Obviously with the chop job on this weapon accuracy is compromised.. but I REALLY want to see this done with a full length bolt gun. Omitting the pine board test, as quite obviously it does that trick. Get chad behind a bolt gun... Up-vote if you would like to see this too! THANKS IV8888 & Crew!
@BG-ww5lg6 жыл бұрын
Why do you think that accuracy is compromised with this barrel length? In reality the only thing that could possibly be compromised would be velocity, i dont think that is the case either though. Once a barrel is long enough to maximize velocity extra length can only add resistance and slow the bullet. Seeing as this cartridge was designed for revolver use i would guess that the gain in velocity between 16" and 24" barrels would likely not be much if any . Barrel length is great for sight radius but it does not dictate accuracy. Velocity helps increase point blank range but also doesnt increase accuracy. Any modern gun will shoot better than 99% of the shooters out there. Dont get so hung up on myths , additional barrel length on this gun if it were to add anything at all would be just a small amount less drop which if properly ranged and compensated for would be of no advantage or disadvantage. Not trying to come off with an additude, just throwing in my 2 cents

I specifically logged on to the comments to say the exact same thing. I've always wondered just what my Beowulf would do at that kind of distance. It would be fascinating to compare a basic FMJ target/plinking cartridge to a hollowpoint and then, finally, to the big dog 350 grain solid brass spitzer. The comparison of those 3 bullet types at long range would be amazing! Especially that solid brass spitzer round, I have a box that I keep saved in case of rogue rhino's or steroid pumping Sasquatches on a rage fest. It's really big, really heavy, meant for relatively short distance shots but it's killing me to know how they would behave at long distances. I don't have access to anything over 100 yards so I'm dependent on others for such a test. Eric....it would be epic....

Observation from "not a gun owner": That bullet looks as aerodynamic and suited to long distance shooting as a BARN DOOR. But it did make for some interesting experiments and results. Keep doing these.

For the South East, that is a wonderful hunting rifle. A dear slayer for sure. The .500 magnum seems to work more like an intermediate rifle cartridge then a handgun cartridge.

Modern commercial Pine is grown on tree farms and selectivly grown for speed making it considerably less dense then the Pine that was used when this test was the standard. Modern commercial Pine is condensed cardboard.

you guys should hang a couple brass door ringer bells on (or wind chimes) off the back of the top of the board (using string). Guarantee a strike to the board will ring a hanging bell.
