In the east, meditation is actually a state of mind while in the west, its seen as a practice. the lack of common definitions has led to so many misconceptions .. also perhaps the practice of sitting down and achieving the state of meditation (effortless focus) is how we train ourselves to switch states of consciousness, instead of being reliant on external sources like a guiding voice?

Greatest misconception of meditation is that it requires effort and focus. On the contrary meditation is conscious rest where you don't do anything. The intention of meditation should be to achieve nothing. I am just gonna sit and observe my thoughts, not focus on my thoughts. If you notice being engrossed in your thoughts, you just break away from them. There is no shift of focus here, just awareness.

Yeah like a flow state, basically meditation while you're doing something.
@rukminiroyy
@rukminiroyy 2 жыл бұрын
@@kaydavisbeautywriter yeah these sound like flow states to me, but some consider this meditation.. this again, is more of the western definition though. it's not always that in meditation, you have no conscious thought. In open awareness (mindful) meditation, you can have conscious thoughts, you just need to be aware of them and not engage.. that being said, clearer definitions are really required; I'm hoping the scientists work together with buddhists and yogis to develop them, as opposed to creating their own definitions of eastern practices and confusing everyone more lol

Meditation does not require focus, true meditation is a passive practice, focus is the by-product of meditation. If someone is focussing, that's a concentration.

Focus could have a different meaning in the West. We give people drugs for focus. What I'm trying to say is that focus for us ,is kinda, defined as being able to not think about things. The drugs we give for ADHD stop thoughts they dont give thoughts.

As a practitioner and teacher of meditation for many years, it is important to note that when many people try something it's possible to have a wide range of different experiences. A lot of this depends on the person and the current state that they are in. For example, if someone is suicidal the experience they have will probably be different than others.

I disagree that meditation engages the prefrontal cortex. Yes, perhaps it does when one learns to meditate, but experienced practitioners will not have beta waves or prefrontal activity. It’s just like anyone who has does something repetitively. Overtime, the use of the prefrontal is irrelevant because the activity is ingrained.

8:00 all jokes aside.. and since we're on the topic of #iphone #android #ads #focus ... why is ok for childrens applications (games, learning, etc) to have these constant ads? i understand its to annoy the user so that they buy the ad-free version but it just feels so wrong; here we have people talking about focus.. and then in DIRECT contradiction to it, we have these policies that seem to potentially harm the future generations abilities; that is why i dont take society seriously lol like we just create these problems and forget that in 10,20,30,40,50,60+ years, it will have consequences. *shrug* it is what it is
@euku1
@euku1 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, the "force to buy the ad-free version" point is quite sensible, but these constant ads themselves serve a direct income purpose. Do you actually think that most of the children app developers even think about "future generations abilities"? Their main and often only goal is to earn some money off the children.

What he is trying to say about meditation is What he has heard about meditation and not what experts say or a guru says about meditation. There are 112 differets types of mediation (Vigyan Bhairav Tantra) and each type included a different approach. The byproduct of meditation is increased focus and concentration and tonnes of others, but mediation is not just focusing. I am saying this coz I practiced meditation for 4 years consistently.

"There are 112 different types of meditation". Why 112? Why not make an effort and think of 114? Or 115? This is all completely random. Meditation has real effect on people but there isn't any real "knowledge" about it, every piece of knowledge is fabricated and arbitrary. Those who speak of it as a science, and those who speak of "gurus" as experts on something they've completely made up, are either trying to fool others or themselves. Meditation can be hard for some people, but its concept is actually pretty simple and straightforward.

First, using these models, they can find undecided voters, and later, knowing in detail how people behaved in past, prepare actions to change those people's minds as they wish.
