The Cyndaquil story reminds me of how I was resetting for Mudkip in ORAS. I did it on an off for a year, and picked it up again in college. I decided to reset my save file to get a new trainer ID. The very first Mudkip on the new save was shiny!

Fun fact: My fist shiny was a Shiny Zubat, which I caught in my Original Gold version cartridge. The thing about Zubat is that you can evolve it into either Golbat or Crobat and actually use it in a Mini-game in Pokémon Stadium 2. This means you can actually play as your shiny Golbat or Crobat in Pokémon Stadium 2. And yes, it retains its shininess.

Zubat: 72.3% chance that you will have encountered after 10,512 attempts. (different than chance per attempt) 0.01434 % chance for two shinies to appear within 140 encounters. Which means overall, 0.0104% chance of this situation happening. Lapras: 8.6% chance that you will have encountered after 3688 attempts. 0.006561% chance to not flee for 8 turns. 52.97% chance to catch after 8 turns. Overall, a .0029888% chance of these things happening in sequence. Pinsir: 3.86% chance that you will have encountered a 4% spawn rate Pokémon after 8072 attempts. Raiku: 0.35% chance that you will have encountered a shiny after 29 attempts. Cyndaquil: 0.0122% chance that you will have encountered a shiny after 1 attempt (obviously). Mudkip: 61.1% chance that you will have encountered a shiny after 7740 attempts. 0.00746% chance that you will encounter a shiny right after the previous situation happening.

Now that we know RNG manipulation is a thing in this generation though, the odds of this happening consistently are much, much higher then that. As long as he pushed the buttons at the same time and had the same system date on both DS, he'd get an almost exact match each time as far as IVs and Natures go. The only difference would be shinyness because thats determined by PID/TID

My favorite shiny story of mine is how my best friend called me on my home phone in middle school, freaking out how she found a shiny unown in ss and the letter was the first initial of her name. I was so excited for her and I felt inspired to do a shiny hunt of my own in hg. My plan was to save in a patch of grass and soft reset for whatever reason (i was not smart) and as I'm walking into the grass I accidentally encounter a pokemon. Like that car accident I got into a few months ago was awesome. I was seriously awestruck. Luckiness is seen glass half full mostly, just like awesomeness. But if something is unlucky, it really shouldn’t mean that it was bad luck… it should mean that luck wasn’t a factor.

I shiny hunted Araquanid in SWSH for 8 months, used EVERY method to increase my chances, would hatch Dewpider eggs while at the same time hunting them in Crown Tundra, it was a moment where I shed a TEAR once I found it and caught it. I've been trying to hatch a shiny male Wooper for my boyfriend for an entire year now. I've found 3 shiny female Wooper. Not a single shiny male. An entire year. Something I noticed as well which would probably make the odds much lower is the first 3 dratini have the same characteristics. The only possible way that could have probably happened otherwise is if both of those games were started at the same time and have the same Trainer ID and the dratinis that were bought were on the same frame. But seeing that the last 2 had different characteristics but the same nature I highly doubt that. Thats some crazy odds

4:37 If my math is correct (which it probably isn't) it would be virtually impossible for the Lapras to stay for more than 4 turns (30% + 30% + 30% +30% to flee) so having it stay for almost twice that amount of time is Impressive, not to mention the 20% spawn rate, 9% Catch Rate of a Lapras, and the 1/8192 odds of finding a shiny at all. Don't know why I picked to do this one at all.

What gets me is that they act as if them finding a shiny is unbelievable when in fact it's just a matter of time and they are working toward finding one. That and that It doesn't take skill, just a lot of time. Now finding them randomly when not looking, or crazy occurrences like getting the same shiny 3x (Cyndaquil) or two in a row (Mudkip and Zigzagoon) is pretty cool to see.
