You look amazing with that shade of red, Sage!! I used to color my hair with henna, too. ♥️ I did that for a handful of years, and it was super pretty. The henna I used was just pure, finely milled henna, the quality type that you’d use for mehandi. I’d mix it with lemon juice to really bring out the color compounds, and I’d get a nice, dark auburn color. Sometimes it looked burgundy! But truthfully, I did get tired of coloring my hair, so I let it grow out. It grew out nicely, almost like an ombré with light brown, gold and faded red. I wish I could have kept that, lol! My natural color was a dark blonde, but it’s darkened up a bit in the last decade for sure, lol. I do miss the gorgeous dark red, but I wanted to learn how to like my natural hair color again. I’m 36 and have very few grey hairs at this point, but I have a goal of going grey gracefully and naturally. I want to embrace my “silver strands of wisdom” with love and appreciation! And since my hair isn’t quite as blonde as it was when I was younger, I’ve been considering getting highlights or a nice balayage. 😊 Something that grows out nicely, so I don’t necessarily have to get it touched up very often. I also figured some blonde highlights would blend well enough with whatever grey hairs I do have, lol.

Yes, I remember when you used henna the other time, confess that I was very curious to know how you would come to lighten hair again, how wonderful that you found a dye that didn't give a reaction💛💛💛, it was beautiful😍😍. I also cut my hair like this, and mine is curly. Is great for matching the ends and looks very U-shaped when it dries, just be careful and aware of the hair parts that shrink more and others less . if someone with curly hair wanted to make a more vintage cut, I love it because the maintenance is easy and there is no need to always cut it to fit the shape🙂🙂 just a trim and that's it❤❤

Fabulous hair, the color and the cut. I’m a natural redhead that has been using henna for about 10yrs cuz it a natural product no chemicals and love the results. I cut my own hair too, but in the opposite direction…ain’t pull it up in a extremely high ponytail on top, then cut with hair scissors…love hair accessories, scarves & bandanas. New sub, glad to see your interest in vintage.

A little pro tip from a fellow henna user: do a “mermaid dip” before you hop in the shower, meaning dip your hair into a sink full of warm water and gently work your fingers through your hair to get out 80-90% of the henna powder. This makes shower clean up so much easier 🙌

I use red wine in my henna for a deeper red / burgundy color. If I want a warm orange brown I use coffee or a dark te. Been doing it for the last 20 years I am allergic to hair color . In sted of pensel ind I use an old hair color bottle because it make it easier and less messy to apply and least but not last. Don’t wash your hair with when you wash out the henna I use a plastic hair brush to get it all out. That way the color will continue to develop over the next couple of days.

I do a pony tail style cut method too but - 1 unicorn 🦄 pulled low at nose level (like Brad Mondo butterfly cut tutorials but with all hair) which gives fringe and most layers, 2 beard under chin for horse shoe shape, 3 variations on getting the layers right at the back eg 2 high pig tails cutting top hair to be same as lower hair. It’s the layers at the back I find difficult, and keep changing, but I do need them the horseshoe shape isn’t enough for my hair. If I use curly girl method I don’t necessarily need to do a wet set to get a vaguely vintage wave with this cut.

Hey Sage, I love your videos :) thank you for uploading! Actually red henna is very traditional in our region and all of our grannies use them to dye their hair. We do not have the indigo hair henna but usually grannies would use this kind of reddish ones on their hands, feet and hair for personal care :) Usually if you have an existing chemical hair dye on your hair, henna would not stick. So it is advised to apply it on natural hair. Visa versa, if you have applied henna previously, do not apply any modern dyes on top of them because it'll just not absorb and you'll be left with patchy areas. Also, we apply henna usually 2 times in a row and leave it overnight each time to get the desired reddish colour, evening it out. This is like an hair mask and reapplied every 2 weeks. The younger generation use hair cream or olive oil in their henna mixture and they claim that it gives them healthier hair with maximum shine. I hope these tips are useful.

You can actually mix henna with rhubarb powder chamoile teand cassia to get your roots done, Colorsilk is fine, but, I always apply coconut oil a hour before applying it, it won't affect your color, but keepps the hair in top condition. You can also put onion skins in your henna water mixture for more golden color!

If you find the henna builds up to become too dark on the rest of the hair, can use sun in to lift it up again. it's pretty much hydrogen peroxide and a 60's thing. many henna heads use it after a couple of years when the henna tends to build up. Hope that may help someone.

Love all your videos and your hair looks exceptionally beautiful! A word of caution, henna dye may cause scalp to become dry. If you look at some Indian women who use it, you can visibly see the hair thinning on the scalp. Your hair looks beautiful so maybe Henna has different affect on different hair types.

I've cut and coloured my hair at home for a very long time, and that's the way I love it :) It was so weird people complaining of "lockdown hair", how horrible their hair looked when they had not been able to go to hairdressers - umm, I never do, and yet my hair is (mostly, as everyone has bad hair days :)) fine and often gets compliments :) IMO, it would do lots of more people good to free themselves of hairdressers! ;D (I always use special hair scissors though, and cut straight across.) By they way, that Revlon dye is just as toxic (or not) as the rest of chemical dyes ;) But I myself prefer to use permanent dyes now for my roots and deposit-only, direct dyes for the rest, as henna gives me a brownish red result, which i don't find flattering. (Plus I want to keep changing my hair colour, which henna doesn't really allow ;)) BTW, *never* cover your hair when using chemical dyes (like you did with a shower cap with dyeing your roots), as that actually makes the process even more toxic and can be downright dangerous! With herbal dyes like henna it's ok to do, even recommended.

Like you, I haven't missed out on hair cuts & colour as I never go to the hairdresser. I stopped going to them about 5 years ago & am so glad I did. I use L'Oréal permanent hair dye about every 6 weeks & trim it as well. I use roughly the same technique as Sage, bringing two sides to the front.

I even used to cut and dye my friends and family members hair too back years ago as well. It was crazy how many came to me to have it done 😅 I am in the process of growing out my bleach damaged hair after going crazy with tons of colors for a couple years so I'm just waiting for that and cutting off the dead bits as it grows so I csn have my natural color back since it honestly looks best on me. Maybe add in some caramel brown or a bit deeper brown ombre highlights at the bottoms once it's longer again 🙃

Wow! 💖 I can hardly believe all you did was tie it and cut it, then trim the sides! I recently tried cutting the horseshoe shape on my hair at home with help.... Even though we followed a relatively simple hairdresser's video for a middy cut, it was still difficult, took far longer, and the results weren't as good as yours. Some important questions: 1) While you said to cut straight across, the final result before you removed the hair tie seemed slightly curved like a horseshoe--am I right? 2) Would you say your hair is medium-thick? I think on my thick hair I'd have to do some thinning on the ends (point-cutting, or "taper-cutting," as the vintage hair guides phrased it) to be able to set it properly. 3) What cutting method do you use to trim the sides? It looked as though, unlike the big blunt cut for the tied part, you didn't close the scissors all the way and pulled them downward as you trimmed--yes? 4) What are the reference points for starting to trim the sides at an angle? Do you start from under the chin on both sides of the head? Thank you so much for sharing this easy method! My dread of my next at-home haircut attempt has been replaced by happy vintage hair dreams now. 😊
