Thank you for shining light on this topic! Back when my family owned rabbits, my older sisters had two buns with erect ears and a year later I was allowed to get one as well (let's not talk about how well we did with the bonding) and I decided on a lop eared one - not only because I thought they were cuter (I've actually changed my mind about that since then), but also because my book recommended them for kids. The reasoning was that they are supposedly calmer than other bunnies. I hate that obsolete misinformation so much. In the last couple of years I learned so much more about rabbits than before (despite not owning them anymore). Moving the ears is not just to detect sounds but also an important form of communication. So no wonder they are calmer... even if they don't lose their hearing they are stripped of a good chunk of their body language and iirc that makes them tend to behave more submissively? On another important note: The wax build up can lead to infections (or rather inflammation) that can go undetected for a long time; looking into the ear from the outside is not enough, x-rays/MRIs are necessary, unfortunately - afaik only very few vets offer them (for rabbits) and of course they're expensive. There is alsl the option for surgery to widen the ear canal. Rescuing lop eared rabbits and giving them the life they deserve (which not everybody can afford) is a good thing, but the feature really shouldn't be bred anymore.

Our cat had one of her eye removed as a kitten and is pretty much blind in her remaining one. This doesn't slows her down! She lives her life to the fullest, just like any other normal cat. Being legally blind myself, she became a source of inspiration for me. If she doesn't let her handicap stop her from doing what she wants to do, why would I let mine do it?!?!

Very interesting observations. Our pets surprise us sometimes, but definitely we learn a lot from the interactions with them. Unfortunately, there is much less known on exotic pets. ❤❤

I got super excited to see my comment in a video Especially one of YOUR videos 😂❤ i also realize that if Sage thumps his foot when he thinks there may be danger (even though there never would be) Cleo can still feel the vibration so she would still be able to get to a safe area (even though everywhere is safe there) so maybe rabbits thump to alert deaf rabbits too.

I'm not sure what to think about the fact, that humans created a species, that can have so many problem, just because they wanted them to look cute. Not to mention, that there is nothing wrong, in terms of cuteness, with regular rabbits.

Humans have done the same with dogs and cats for centuries. It's selfish and breeding of those breeds should be banned

It occurs in almost all of the pets in the pet trade unfortunately 😅 Even in reptiles there are morphs that come with serious health issues because the breeders care more about how cool they look than their overall health.

Since this is also a hamster channel as well, I thought I'd mention that red-eyed Syrians are more prone to cataracts. It's a genetic issue tied to the red eyes. Luckily, it doesn't impact their quality of life. Even under the best of circumstances, normal black-eyed Syrians black eyes can't see very well.

Thank you so much! This video was such a big help for me as I recently took on a lop eared bun from a family member who no longer had time for him. Hes only around 5 months old and he does not respond to noises, name calling, treat jars etc. I have to tap on things and make a loud noise/vibration to get his attention 🤔 If he sees me he comes running over though. Bless him. I thought I was going mad wondering if buns could be deaf from the second he arrived. He also loves sniffing the hoover which is wierd because he was strictly outdoors before coming here so he can't be "used" to it xx ❤

We had a deaf bunny at the shelter I volunteer at. She was a beautiful little white lop with blue eyes. The way I knew she was deaf if that she didn't respond to the other rabbits' thumping and occasional panics, or the vacuum cleaner. She's very happy and healthy otherwise.

Hello Victoria, I’m not sure if you’ll see this, but I love your channel and I’ve been watching it for almost 2 years now! When I was a little kid, my dad surprise me with a Hamster, we didn’t do any research so we got him a tiny tails cage for him. After putting my hamster, Hammy into the cage, we just thought it was too small for him. So we did a little bit of research and then we upgraded him to a 450 square inch bin cage with 6 inches of paper bedding. It was the bare minimum of almost everything but I think he liked the upgrade. And after a little bit I had two hamsters with bin cages on my dresser in my room. After my hamsters died I didn’t think much about hamsters. Until I found you! And now I have been researching for two years straight and watching your videos, and I have all the research I need. Thanks to you now I’m going to build a DIY 1,152 Square inch Cage with a 12 inch solid wheel, 12 inch paper bedding, and lots of enrichment. My dad and I are going to build one of your DIY cages and I am so excited! Thank you so much. My next hamster will have a very good life!!! 🐹

My last dog was a Japanese Chin. He was deaf. When I rescued him I had tried to train him the same way as my previous dog but realised things weren't right. I took him to a local dog school where they hold classes and 1 to 1s.(they also train animals for TV and films). After some experiments the lady explained he was deaf and said she'd worked with deaf dogs so trained me to communicate with him. When we learned to understand one another it was truly Remarkable . Vet confirmed his deafness as well. Well done for working with it. My lil guy would notice shadows and movement and seemed very alert to it. Hand gestures and signals and lots of face on communication. And may be an odd extra, but also think pictures of what you want to say to them. They do understand that. You always bond really close with your pets.❤

Hi Victoria! I have a quick (yeah, not really quick...) question about my hamsters! So I have had 5 hamsters so far, and my current two are both syrians named Otis and Oliver. Before it was or double O's, it was our M&Ms, Mo and Merlin. When Mo passed and we got Otis, he never seemed bothered by Merlin (they are in separate cages, but the cages are next to each other). Otis had run away, and when we found him, he was super mad at us (he just wanted freedom, lol) but got over it quickly. Merlin passed. It was just Otis, who never seemed too bothered by anything. So then along comes Oliver. Next to Otis, like how Merlin was. We usually have never had any problems holding our hammies one after the other without washing our hands, even if we held Merlin and then Otis, but now with Oliver (if we hold him before Otis) Otis will smell our hand, chatter his teeth like he is mad, and start licking our hand. Is this because he's jealous? Defensive? I could understand if he used to do it with Merlin, and then ALSO did it with Oliver, but he never did it with Merlin. Is it because Oliver has a certain smell he doesn't like? Anyways, thank you for your time. I love your videos SO much, and if it wasn't for you, I never would have started researching my animals!! Sorry about my long question, lol. Keep up the great work! ❤❤❤

Little that I know when I sent her for sterilisation, our Dr asked if she had been pregnant before, which I had no idea. Her ovaries are slightly larger, and she's a cross breed. Does your vet ever clean Cleo's ears (or Lola's back then) to get the wax out? I don't know how common this is in other countries - but owners of lop eared rabbits here usually have their ears flushed out/rinsed every 2-3 weeks to get all the wax out, so that they hear better and to minimise the risk of infections. Is this a thing in other countries as well?

No, I've never had a vet do that.

Wait is that a code in Sage's ear????? What does it mean tho?
@spimeminister4 ай бұрын
It's probably some kind of recognition code from wherever he came from
@VictoriaRaechel4 ай бұрын
It’s just a tattoo from being neutered, similar to a dog or cat.

@VictoriaRaechel4 ай бұрын
At first he was more scared, of it he's gotten better with it now but usually goes and hides from it.
