Wine corks are a stopper used to seal wine bottles. They are typically made from cork (bark of the cork oak). Half of the world's cork wine stoppers come from Portugal's cork oak trees. These trees are so important to the country's ecosystem and economy, they're protected under Portuguese law.Go inside the forests of Alentejo to see how the cork bark is carefully harvested every nine years so it doesn't hurt the trees.

This is just a very good thing. It's very responsible and good to see not much goes to waste at all. People don't realize how important this item is until you don't have it! Many of today's devices still use it in hundreds of applications from cars to home products. Thanks for the look inside.

With all due respect to your age: of course you didn't know where corks come from Tom - you are an American. In America, unfortunately, even college graduates are struggling with what is considered very basic, common knowledge in many countries - and I am talking about elementary or maximum high school students.

@@explozivac I am born in the 70s in a communist regime. I did know where corks come from somewhere at an age under 10. But - I am conviced most persons (not only kids) in todays Europe dont know it, more than that they not even care. - I am not conviced even back then all people did know. I am from a middle class family and we did not mix much with the lower classes. (Although communist nostalgics claim otherwise.) Many years later (in democracy) I was surprised which big differences in knowledge (and interest for knowledge) existed. It is not the end of the world, not knowing how corks are made. The interesting thing back then was, we/I did know where it comes from, but we also did know we never will see how it is made, as we could not travel there. Perhaps this is the reason todays generations dont care. They can go an see, dont need the abstract knowledge.

I've noticed that over the last couple of decades, fewer wines come with cork stoppers. A lot of them are using synthetic ones now. Only the more expensive wines still use cork. I guess it doesn't matter if you're going to drink the wine soon, but if you're going to age it for a long time, you do need the cork for it to age correctly.

@@seeker.abdullah yes, its just that when I read ingridients on food it mentions all sort of wierd things and a lot of E number items. The question does arise what we are even consuming. Then we have fabric which is not found in nature, it is a synthetic material. We have engineering woods as well like MDF and Chipboard, make using science, not found in nature. Then we also have silicon based breasts and other implants, lip fillers and only devil knows what else. Even relationships are not natural, they are on facebook. Politicians are not natural, they are just working for corporations.

I have used both types of corks in my winemaking hobby. The cheapest and most popular is the agglomerated cork but I have also used the natural cork. The natural cork is best for genuineness and classic look, but the agglomerated corks are stronger. I think I prefer the natural cork for its looks and value.
