Thank you Mary for having such a wide range of info on your channel. Don’t be in a hurry people. If you feel she isn’t going fast enough, turn on the video while you’re doing dishes or something else. This video actually contains info that my mother taught me and that I’ve tried to teach my kids. All just practical ways of shopping. My mom wasn’t a “prepper”, just frugal. (And a great cook) I love your videos on ferments and others that promote excellent health. Thanks again Mary! Keep those great videos coming!

Oh Mary! You had me, hook, line, and sinker, right up to the part where you said to cross off chocolate! 😩 As you began covering the “cross off” list, I sat there with MY fingers crossed, thinking to myself, DON’T SAY CHOCOLATE… Whatever you do, pleaaase, DON’T say chocolate!! And then you did... If the world comes to an end, I’ll be huddled on the floor of my pantry, inhaling my chocolates! 😂 I do understand why you said it. I so enjoy the information you provide, and thank you for sharing your knowledge. ♥️

Thank you, this is the least panic I've felt watching a prepper video in the past 3 months lol. I feel more in control of becoming productive instead of freaking out. Lately, I can only turn on a prepper video for 2 seconds before I'm in my car without a plan, driving to the store with my last little bit of cash and spending out of fear, which leads me to come home with non-high priority items (like 10 bottles of clearance hand-sanitizer but only 1 can of food lol) and isn't effective. With your video, I felt the need to listen first and then act, but act mindfully and not in panic. Thank you!!!

I'm so happy I can help you with a plan! I learned all of this from my mom - she is SO calm in any situation and under any circumstances. Thank you, Mary, for your down to earth, sweet, girl-next-door approach to the subject of prepping! I'd been trying to get my family on board for years...as a female engineer, the ladies in my circle thought I was always a little off because of my (sometimes) extreme practicality and utilitarianism. When I started sharing YOUR videos, suddenly, my cousins, aunties and sisters became overnight prepper converts.... you did in a few videos what I couldn't in 20 years. Kudos! Keep up the amazing and logical work!

Just a tip for other people on food stamps: you can use them on Amazon and get food shipped to your house. And some things will be cheaper. I just now put in an order and paid $3.63 for a honey bear. I also paid $15 for my favorite flavor of ramen in an 8 pack. Which brought the cost down to $1.85 each. Which is about the same as buying it in the store price wise. But, no store near me carries the Korean Bbq flavor. And I saved the time and energy of going to the store. With all my health problems, saving energy is essential.

Hi, Mary ❤️. What I’ve found helpful building a stockpile is shopping at particular stores more often now than i did before. Aldi, lidl and even Big Lots have amazing variety and great prices. I think the most surprising places to find deals was Big Lots. I have found ww flour for .63 cents a bag! Yes, it’s hit or miss but if you’re out and about anyway, it’s worth going there and checking them out. One other ingredient i have always kept on hand is dry bay leaves. They are a must when making soups. My mom, who was Sicilian, would always make us a tea and/or a syrup with bay leaves when we were sick with a cold or cough. It was so tasty and it did really help make us feel better. I enjoy your channel and the familiar NY accent. Thanks for all you do.

I had 2 conversations at the grocery store last week with women who wanted to start a pantry and learn to cook real food. I suggested your channel because of your great information, your concern for beginners and experienced preppers, and your wonderful, calm voice. Everyone is finally seeing that food prices are not going down, and we all need to make the most meals out of what we purchase. Thank you for teaching me some new tricks (and where are the extra jars of rice? oh, look in the pantry book - room, location and number of cans!), and being able to pass that info on to more women.

Great information! I like to say that products I buy should have only one or two ingredients in them. I was once in a store and a woman looked really confused. She asked me if the meal replacement bars were processed foods, I suggested that if it no longer looks like part of a plant or animal, it is a processed food. I love the point you made that we spend so much money on grocery items that we do not need ( potato chips), and that is very wasteful. We need to rethink feeding our bodies and our families. You are a great champion of this!

I have a discount grocery store nearby. They had spaghetti sauce for 74 cents a can and noodles 71 cents a can. My husband didnt flinch when I bought 12 of each. We eat spaghetti around twice a month so that is 6 months worth less than 25 dollars, plus they sell it use by dates were 2024. I get lots of looks when I do that type of purchase but I never clear the shelves. When we went into lock down we only needed fresh eggs and fresh milk due to my pantry supply. We lacked for nothing and made it through eating well and plenty of crock pot or oven baked meals whole we worked outside. Going to print you list and plug up the holes. Thank you so much for all your hard work point into this and other videos

I watched your video about 10 cheap foods to stock. Went to Aldi this week & although a few things were not available, I still did pretty good. Got lots of cheap flour, butter, yeast, peanut butter, cornstarch, baking soda, Spam, rice & 2 whole chickens to make bone broth! Tomorrow, I'm canning chicken soup with the inexpensive extra veggies I scored. All this, and still stayed within my budget. Great advice. Storing the yeast, butter & flour in the freezer to prolong the shelf life. Thank you!

Hello, just a tip I learned from my son who worked at our local Walmart last summer. If you look at the paper price tag for an item on the shelf, the large number on the left is the amount you will pay. The smaller number in the orange box on the right side of the tag tells you the cost per ounce. It makes it very easy to compare what is the best buy between brand names, but also sizes within the same brand name.

It is so much easier than running to the store. Love you Mary. Thank you and blessings. Hint for everybody! If you have a Costco membership, or know someone who does, don't buy yeast anywhere else! It comes in a large, air-tight bag and ounce for ounce is incredibly cheap! If you don't think you can use it all, split it with a friend, or put a bunch oof it into a bag and keep it in the freezer, while the rest of it lives in your fridge. Costco can also be a great place to buy cases of canned goods. Their variety isn't as extensive, but what they do have can be really inexpensive. But they aren't always cheaper, so be sure you know what the grocery store prices are before you buy at costco. Another benefit is that the cans are packed in a cardboard half box with a plastic seal on it, so it stores quet easily. Thank you, Mary! I love hearing your voice.

Hi Mary, from a Texan! I am one of those persons who is sensitive to certain smells, dyes and chemicals. I quit buying a lot of the cleaning products several years ago. And only buy the All laundry detergent and Dawn dish soap. I use vinegar as my fabric softener when doing laundry. I made a spread sheet several years ago of the main items I purchase and left room to add items also. Even though I have a prepper pantry now, when I use an item out of my pantry, I mark it on my list, so this way I can replace it in my prepper pantry. We don't buy a lot of what we call luxury items (chips, cookies, etc.), the only way these get purchased, is if they are on sale for a really good price. I have made cookies a lot more this past year, and my 4 year old grand daughter loves to help. I still buy Cokes, but usually only when they are on sale, because it's like my husbands coffee and he has been drinking it for a very long time. I keep stocked up on coffee for me. I plan to start making some homemade bread, so I will be taking a look at your recipe for the sandwich bread. Thanks for the video.

Hi Mary. Thank you for sharing info and helpful tips on how to be prepared for an emergency. I have been buying a little extra canned foods, rice, and old fashioned oats for about 6 months now. I am retired and don’t have big finances… 😂 but I am doing the best I can. Also, canned soups… Progresso mainly. Thanks for all your help. God bless and keep you. 😃

Thank you once more, Mary ( my middle name ☺️) I just want to mention that you might want to see some of the late Preacher’s videos; his channel is still up but not sure for how long. His Sunday sermons ( as well as his memorial 😢) are there, and I am in no way trying to continue his evangelical work, but his prepper videos are what got me started. Love you much! ❤️🙏

Thank you ❤️ for such a great video Mary. I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but a store cupboard substitute for eggs is making a 'flax egg' - this is what vegan's use as an egg substitute in recipes. I believe it's 1 x tablespoon of ground flaxseed, add 3 x tablespoon of water. Mix and stand for 5 minutes. It turns into a gelatinous mixture which really does resemble an egg; then just use in the relevant recipe. Hope this helps.

Green beans & canned corn were only .48 cents today at my grocery, I stocked up. Check out Winco foods I'd you have one in your area. In high school our home ec teacher put herself through college working in a pineapple cannery. She told us that all the fruit was the same. When they would finish with brand names they would just change to different labels to fill store brands orders. Thanks so much for sharing your great ideas for living well! God bless you and yours.

I bought soy sauce and teriyaki for all the rice I have. It's a good thing that I've dried peas and carrots. I found diced frozen potatoes to dehydrate. And shiitaki mushrooms! They're drying now with sweet corn, and hash brown bites. Not something I've ever bought, but if I'm not eating fresh I'm determined to eat interesting. Hense the 9 cake mixes in different flavors. I've got staples. I need some fun.

This video is so well laid out. I’ve been trying to pick up some extras each week and really stocking up when I see a good deal. Where I get caught is that we eat a good amount of fresh produce. I’m not sure how I can store enough fruit and vegetables for my family of six.
@MarysNest2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm…yes, I understand completely. Although your do need to keep power outages in mind, would stocking more frozen vegetables help? Love, Mary

@@MarysNest yes, I think frozen fruit and veggies are a great idea. We do have home canned applesauce from our apple tree. It’s delicious! I think this year we will try to preserve even more of our apples. We have a massive tree!

Same here. When we got stuck home in the beginning of COVID-19 and the grocery store shelves were empty, actually fresh produce were more available than canned or frozen food because people don't stock pile them. Might be a good idea to learn how to preserve different fruits and vegetables.

Would you please compare lettuce/fresh food keepers and let us know if there are any to help us keep things fresh? We are on a fixed income. I eat a mixed green salad every day. Is buying Costco lettuces a good biy? How long will they last? Will I have to throw alot out? Or is there a way, or is there a saver that really works keep greens fresh? Thank you.

Hi Anne, I will have to look into those. Great idea! Would be nice to find something like that which worked to extend the life of our greens. If my greens start to look a little wilted, I usually throw them into a soup. Love, Mary

Hi Mary. I have just recently come across your videos and am hooked. You are so upbeat and have such positive energy and are a fabulous teacher. I have entertained the idea of turning my kitchen into a traditional foods kitchen for awhile now but have been rather intimidated by the idea. Finding your videos has changed that. I am hoping you can help me with something. I have a processed foods kitchen, lol, I guess you would call it, or maybe even a hybrid, lol. I eat a lot of whole foods anyway. My question is, for the person like myself who has no idea where to begin ...what do I do first? What do I get rid of? Do I phase things out that I don't want to consume anymore or just pitch it? What traditional foods items do I begin to buy first? I am at the very, very, very beginning, lol, and am not sure how to start the process, though I am so excited to!!!
@MarysNest2 жыл бұрын
Hi Heather!! Welcome!! So glad you’re here!! All wonderful questions. The first place to start is to basically just start slowly. Work your way through making traditional foods ylittle by little. You can start with my playlist which is titled mastering the basics of traditional nutrient dense foods: kzbin.info/aero/PLkRuW3pBo2U3b4eu0QraZReKlGzA11h3y next, go to my homepage on KZbin and look through the playlists that I have there and start making foods out of those individual playlists: kzbin.info but the most important thing to remember is do this little by little and stay in your budget. Do not rush. Master one skill at a time so that you never feel overwhelmed. And stay tuned. I think you’re going to love the video I have coming out on Saturday because it’s all about how to get started with this traditional foods journey and how to work your way through it. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

I just wanted to express a thought about old fashioned oats. If you get the quick oats, they are the same price as the old fashioned, but you will use less energy to cook them as they cook in only a minute vs 5 minutes for the old fashioned oats.

I tell ya…it’s laziness tat makes this hard. I’m no saying that to criticize. But let’s face it, it’s so much easier to make a sandwich with bread from the store, than to make it on your day off. And, you need to make time to make bread too….I’m much better now than I was before, but I keep pressing forward and I am doing better today than I was a month ago. I’m now scheduling bread day, canning weekends etc just like my laundry day. I just do it! Do it!!

For canned foods, if you have an ALDI near you, check them out for canned food prices before getting them at Wal Mart. Canned foods are usually considerably cheaper. Every couple of weeks I tend to get a “flat” (12 cans) of a vegetable averaging between 49 cents and 59 cents a can. So adding $6 to my regular budget. Another way I save a lot of money is I now use reusable little coffee filters for my kurig. I think I save at least half on my coffee budget that way.
