VIDEO NOTES: 1. Simplify and cast away - Clear space - You can't do everything st once, break it down so that it is less intimidating. - simplify means reducing your life and the activities you do to the most simplistic. - cast away means getting rid of things the are currently filling up your space that are detracting from thinking about this problem and thinking about it (plan, write down, journal) To create this space: - low friction: easy thing to do throughout the day, that offers you an opportunity to think about a problem. (Going on a walk, just some space to stop and think, meditate, going to gym, hobby like drawing, playing instrument) - high friction: requires a lot of mental energy (journeling) 2. Use the space *If the vessel is not clean, everything you put in will be sour.* When everything is overwhelming, it is very tempting to take the least care of yourself (which makes life harder) - how long do I have to make this decision? - if long enough, forget about complexity, just focus on cultivating the best health you can, you will be equipped to make better decisions What would be the ultimate act of self love right now? Practises of certainty: Things you can rely on every day. No matter what. Eg: (1x workout, 1x nutritious meal, 10pm go to bed) When you make decisions from a clean vessel. They will be more trustworthy and you are more liikely to make better decisions. Best/worst decisions (high friction activity): 3 best decisions. 3 worst decisions. Questions: Whose voice was I listening to? Best: Worst: What emotions did I feel before + after making the decision? Best: Worst: Where was I? What state of mind was I in? Best: Worst: Board of advisors (low friction activity): Think of role models, or people you admire. Have them as your board of advisors. What they would do in that situation? How they would challenge it, how they would think about seeing this idea. Speaking to yourself in 3rd person: (From book Chatter by Ethan Kross) In order to get distance from a situation, to gain perspective, you will see things more objectively and less intertwined in your emotions. Eg, "Your name" thinks... How to socialise when you are going through it: *"The best way to make the worst decision is to ask everyone's opinion"* People will mind their own business when the business is worth minding. Most people's business is not worth minding. Meaning that life is not exciting enough for them to not mind what you're doing. - They're trying to avoid silence in a conversation. - They wanna focus on your stuff cause it's more exciting than theirs. - Snowballing: They take what you have said as fact and run with it. Make a boundary, say that you won't speak about it. It may feel like lying if you speak about a decision you haven't thought through yet. You need to talk to the RIGHT people. - They will empathize with you - They will ask you questions, give you a perspective shift on the situation. (A calibrated question, what/how question aimed in a particular direction) Thinking: Your ally AFTER you clear the space - journaling - talking to yourself out loud. - or any high/low friction practises Bad type of thinking: Chatter Thinking is like a lens, you look for with a button on it that either zooms you out or into a problem. When it is unhelpful: Constantly thinking of a problem, stuck in empathic rumination, seeing things super zoomed in, not seeing the overarching perspective Good type of thinking: Productive + perspective gathering line, asking yourself calibrated questions by talking to yourself in 3rd person Like fishing for the answers Space eaters: We create more complexity in life by allowing space eaters in. The habits that add more psychological complexity + make it harder to deal with the situation that you're facing. When you're not cultivating good health you allow space eaters in. Space eaters: Using up the space you have to be aware enough to notice when your answers are biting on the hook of your thinking (noticing realisations/revelations) Examples: Doomscrolling, junk food, drug addictions, media (eg, TV shows, porn) addictions, getting stuck in rumination, gossiping, any compulsive maladaptive behaviour Difference between thinking and thoughts: Thoughts come and go. You have no control over whether they arise. You have control over the presence and space you cultivate in order for them to arise. Not necessarily negative or positive. Negative thought patterns arise when you jump on the thought, and think about it more, building the momentum in a negative direction. Summary: intuitions that arise in the space you have created for them to arise in. When you don't create space, you are delaying the process in which you can find a solution. How to tell if you're overthinking: Your emotions will let you know. You will start to feel frustrated. You feel like you are regressing and not making any progress. Angsty. Like you need to do something, but you're not sure what and you've got excess energy. This can start to manifest as anxiety. Once you get to this point, you need to pick a path. Pull the trigger so to speak. If you don't act on the energy, the space eaters may start to come in and ruin your positive energy. This may turn into negative energy, you become self judgemental and your confidence will start to go. How to best make that decision: Before you make any decision EVER(!!) in your life. How much time do you have? If you don't have a deadline then you might want to set one. DESTROY THE EXPECTATIONS!!! (but he said this in a very mellow defeated tone) Like fine pottery: the tighter you grip, the more likely they are to shatter. The bane of good decision making. Because it convinces you that you need to make the best decision. It does not exist. Settle on making the least worst decision or a good decision. Taken from the book Chimp paradox: Get a list, draw a table. On one side, write down all of you gremlin thoughts. "I should" thoughts. Eg, "I should know what to do by now" Unhealthy expectation thoughts. On the other, change it to the autopilot thoughts. Eg, "I'm gonna mess up but I will learn from my mistakes" More realistic but take a while to program in manually. Read that page everyday in the morning to reprogram your gremlin thoughts. "If I had all the confidence in the world, would I do it?" Take something that sparks fear within you and ask this question. At the heart of decision making paralysis is self doubt. This may make you realize that the reason you are not making this decision is because of a short term problem (believing you aren't confident enough) that can be easily solved. As soon as you make the decision, you will get the confidence you needed. 25% Rule: Break it down so that it is less intimidating. Take the thing that is overwhelming you. Half it, then half it again. Until it is manageable. This may even be 5 percent of the initial problem. This is the next step you need to take. Focus on finding the "what" of the decision. So the decision in itself. Forget about the how. - Takes a lot of humility. Quench your ego. It's gonna throw those expectations onto you. Swallow your pride and realise what you can do right now. I'm happy :) There is no solution. There are only tradeoffs. Does this add problems I want to deal with that come with making that decision? If you're not willing to make an exchange for the problems that will be introduced into your life because of the decision, then don't make the decision. "Does this decision enlarge or diminish me?" Enlarge: Expanding you into more progress, putting you on a positive trajectory. Diminish: Negative trajectory. If you are unsure what to do in life: Pick 1 thing you're insecure about, and work on it. A life well lived can be you just engaging in this process. Maybe some of your fears. Just focus on overcoming your fear instead of big life decisions. If you take a life path temporarily that you aren't striving for, you will still learn a lot on the journey. This might reorient you to the original path or highlight others that may be better. WORD TO INGRAIN YOUR MIND: Initiative When you reach the point where you've spent enough time thinking about something, then take initiative. If you have a few options in front of you, pick the one that is hardest in the short term. That will result in the biggest long term benefits.

Thanks for the video Lewis! I just want to say one of the biggest take aways I've ever gotten from your videos is the hamster wheel of anxiety. I used to go over and over thinking about every potential negative and it would make me paralyzed and fearful to make a decision. Now I remind myself almost instantly when I start to get anxious that if I make any decision it will propel to me to the next action and the anxiety won't last. It's helped my confidence a lot.

Correctly watching just stopping here to say: I have never thought of myself journaling, but the way you have put it, came across me as extremely necessary and a good solution to actively solve a problem. I’m going through a period of my life which I can be constantly in low friction, thinking what the hell Im supposed to do with my life, but never go an answer, probably high friction should get me a bit more insight into the matter or at least dive in deeper on the problem and not just on a surface level. Thank you for your video, I will continue watching it :)

It's a really difficult thing to do for most people I think. I've read Campbell and Watts and to me it feels like those guys are in a class all on their own. Most of us are too hard on ourselves and give ourselves no chances when there are opportunities. Worrying too much and overthinking is a huge offender for myself. Sometimes I do a "pleasure predicting sheet" advocated by Dr. Burns and in cognitive behavior therapy. That takes some of the wind out of the sails of worrying too much sometimes and I can just get into action doing what I want. Following my bliss so to speak.

Hey, Lewis, thank you very much for your effort! ;) The problem I've decided to share is a complex one, although not so frightening when having some ways to speak to people interested For the last 2,5 years I've studying in university I don't like, but I realised that only upon some time. It came as really tempering experience, yet I still have 1,5 ahead to study and then some decisions to take to embrace my passions. The problem is, I got astray from studying and working upon my improvement so much that now I can't even bear my own judgements in that regard. And what prolongs this issue is that it feels that I don't have vigor to take responsibility on me, solely; it feels so demanding, not engaging in any sense. God, sonething like that it is. Will go watching overthinking video and journal, hahah

Love the video and all the points made. I just felt the need to add my 2 cents, so to speak. The idea of the 25% rule, breaking down your decision into small parts and over time in order not to get overwhelmed is great and a very important lesson to learn. However, for those of us who have been in an unfortunate position of having to make literal life or death decisions in a short span of time will know that sometimes this is not possible. I would like to say that circumstance can indeed be overwhelming and unfortunate enough so that it doesn't matter how much you try to be confident about the decision, you might be overwhelmed and/or dealing with the repercussions for a long time. It doesn't mean it is your fault or that you missed some important step in the process. Life can break you for a while without it being due to your shortcoming and it's ok to admit that. Just my experience. I don't hear it pointed out often in self-help or mental health education, that we cannot prevent all distress or disaster even with the best of preparation, knowledge and care. Be gentle on yourselves. We can't always come out on top.

Just wanted to say thank you for the video. I was starting second guessing my decision this morning ((it's also a big one although I feel like I'm starting with both a 'blank canvas' and the fear of loosing the small security I still have)) but just the title on it's on was enough to make me stop spiraling... might've teared up a bit throughout it, ngl... but it was very helpful, I'm making the 'least worst' decision now. Also didn't mind it being long, the 'long form insight' was great and I took my time watching and rewinding it. It felt very much like having an impromptu philosophical chat with an old friend... If you wanna do it again I'm all for it. And again, thank you. :)

I'm only 21 and its all felt a bit overwhelming but I'm glad ive taken a step back. Once I move out again I think I'd like to move to a bigger city, spend some time internationally (mostly thinking japan or mexico) or just vanlife around for awhile but I'm worried about the level of risk. So I've trying to figure out what the fuck I actually want? It ain't so simple to really decide on that. Long story short, I'm from Brazil and did an exchange program in Japan last year, stayed there for a whole year studying Japanese and it was completely astonishing, by far the best year of my life. BUT, right now, I've graduated from university and I'm working remotely as a software engineer. So the thing that is destroying my mind is if I should try to go back to Japan to keep studying (since that place is so damn good for me, but I'd probably need to quit my well paid job and that would cost me a lot) or if I should do something like digital nomad, just keep working and traveling (I'm not really into that tbh, not sure I want to keep working as a developer and I actually just value a community feeling of having friends to whom I can care about and hang out). Ain't no easy decision and as you said, its a privileged problem to have, but its withering me out. I may just choose one and go for it, worst case scenario I can just go back and try something new, just hoping that I'll discover what I want along the way. In the end, the best decision is the one you actually take instead of the ones that stay unspoken inside our minds.

Table of Councelors has me heartbroken, Lewis… I would never expect this single KZbin comment to change your mind, but I wish I could talk to you and understand why. I can somewhat understand from a psychology perspective but there are some seriously dangerous beliefs that they perpetuate.

I'm priveleged enough to have grown up with a Mother who practiced some core buddhist ideology of letting go, existing in the freedom from desire and existence. That is to say as an Athiest, that Buddhism has the first half perfected to a science. Lacking is the next step... What do you create with that blissful (And it is blissful) freedom you find yourself in? I didn't find an answer in this video but it did help me reflect that I absolutely do want to use that free, clean foundation to engage and create, and then to cleanse again in a cycle until life is over for me. What is it that I want to engage and create? It will be different every single time and sometimes it is nonsensical! Sometimes it is ego based (education) sometimes it is social (marriage). Basically, your first part about clearing the way resonates with me heavily and I feel lucky that I have had the skills to do that from my upbringing and I hope to share it with others in my life.

The answer is not Columbia or Costa Rica. You can be in the right country in the right neighbourhood but on the wrong street or there at the wrong time. Maybe city hopping every 3 months for a year is a better approach, try a little of everything on the menu. Or go to your desired location when conditions are worst, if what you are seeking is a long term commitment. Dubai in summer is just as isolating as Britain in winter.

Hey, I just want you to know that my life went from great to complete shit. I feel the worst I've felt in a long time, I hate myself more than ever and I really wish I could just die. But I'm super grateful for this video, and I'm going to try everything you say. You've helped me a lot in your previous videos and I just wanted to express my love for you. You give me a glimmer of hope when I have none.

@NewelOfKnowledge I wrote a long multi paragraph response but it looks like KZbin didnt accept it after I posted. Or maybe it got marked as spam. The last thing I said was that I appreciate you asking because I'll probably never tell anyone in my real life. So thank you.

ur content always inspires me. altho i have one critism, i wish you would color code a bit more. like at 12;46 i noticed the statement: "when life gets too complex = simplicity + cast away" and i felt it wouldve resonated harder with me (and maybe others) to make the word complex to red to match with the chaotic part of the blue and red drawing. im sorry this is really nitpicky but just something i saw. hope youre having a great day and keep up with the good work.

Not through watching yet but to add a note before I forget... re: 25:00 or so, does it sometimes make sense to add a 3rd category for "Controversial Decisions" along with Good and Bad ones? I feel like there are big decisions I've made that have had such multivariate consequences that they could only be framed as good or bad over a longer timespan than what I've lived so far.

Currently sick with something along the lines of tracheite (not sure what exactly), i've been fighting this illness which is fairly hard to live with as i cough and vomit all the time, but i've been overwhelmed by it mostly because i have big exams coming this year and i've missed a lot of classes, that and my older brother being very judgemental about it and my mother being overall not very careful with the household budget, so despite being 17, i feel pressures to grow up and deal with everyone's problems while having to survive my own issues

@NewelOfKnowledge i went to the hospital last week and i was put onto stronger treatment since i've been out of energy for over a month and a half and i've made slight progress, now i can walk upstairs when i'm feeling good. But my familly's not been checking up on me at all and the only people who's actually shown interest in my well being was a few online friends that have been asking about me everyday
