Great video. Your explanation of thinking of 'closing the gap' is really helpful. One of my favourite moments from the 2017 CrossFit Games was Alec Smith's muscle ups in the Muscle-up Clean event. He was just so fluid, it was a thing of beauty:)

Richie - a good explanation of a kipping muscle up with a lot of swing. Might be worth also mentioning that the progression is to eliminate the kipping and be able to do a muscle up with form (hence requiring strength vice a hip swing and pull over). Do you do both? Which do you prefer?
@Nguroa7 жыл бұрын
I've been trying for so long to hit this movement. 100kg - easy 12 reps pull up, 10 chest to bar kipping pull ups, but muscle ups have alluded me.

Great little summary Craig! Looking forward to beating my own MU barrier. On another subject, I really like your vlogging style, the films you make are stronger and better than ever. Could you one day do a little piece on your camera and lenses? And how what you edit with? I know my daughters would really appreciate your knowledge as both are starting out in media at college this September. Thanks to you Craig for all your positivity and of course, thanks to the other hero of your vlogs, Jaz!

I just did my first "muscle ups" a few days ago (i.e. aided, I bent the knees, this guy here kips) and I have to say I didn't have that feelgood moment I was expecting to have. That is because I felt like cheating. In the beginning I was keeping my legs straight and I couldn't do it. As soon as I lifted the knees it was too easy. If this guy in this video didn't kip, he wouldn't be able to do it either. The way I see it, the reason why the muscle up has become something that everyone wants to boast that they can do, was exactly because it requires a lot of power/explosiveness to do it "properly" (minimal movement and straight legs). If the muscle up was just seen as some sort of kipping move that anyone who can do 10 pull ups and 10 dips could do, then it wouldn't be such the "famous" exercise it is today. After all, doing 10 pulls ups is nothing to boast about, is it now?
@TheMdpalmer5 жыл бұрын
If you're doing an exercise to impress people and not to improve yourself or have fun with it, you have other issues. Every exercise has progressions. A kipping bar muscle up isn't cheating. It's an efficient way to get above the bar. And it's fun.
@yianpap60935 жыл бұрын
@@TheMdpalmer I'm sorry, it is cheating if your goal is to prove (to yourself) that you got stronger, because you didn't. If your goal is to learn how to get over a bar in an "efficient way" (why would that be anybody's goal unless they want to win the crossfit games?) then it's probably easier to just lift your legs up and above the bar. Much less stress on your shoulders and elbow tendons and mission accomplished.
@TheMdpalmer5 жыл бұрын
You're misguided or the typical internet dipshit. In case you didn't notice, the guy in the video is a very strong individual. The point of the video is that there is technique and timing involved for a kipping bar muscle up. If the guy in the video practiced I bet he could do them strict too. I do them because it's fun, not because I have any aspirations for the games.

I love this channel but its a shame that they use a guy in this video who uses steroids. That muscular bulk with leaness is physiologically impossible. The body fat % + lean mass on the black guy is on a scale proven to be unatainable without exogenous hormones. Not a hater, just science. Sorry to rain on the parade.
