Hey Jake thanks for posting this care video. I have been wanting to get a leopard gecko for awhile now. I like watching your videos. I see a lot of passion and care for the pets that you have. The part about the sand was too funny. People can rant and rave all they want. I say do what works for you.

Alright, I want to tell you something that pet stores and websites don't tell you. When a gecko sheds and the shed is in its eyes, you NEED to get it out ASAP. I lost 2 geckos to this stupid eye problem!! The shed made them blind and I had to feed them through a syringe, which was pretty sad. My female (Jazz) died of starvation because of her blindness, I fed her 2 times a day. And she still died of starvation. I wanted everyone who owns a leopard gecko to know this, and make them not suffer the pain of loosing one of their beloved pets, from not knowing about something like this. Okay, I hope this isn't going to be given rude replies, because I lost my geckos, and I wish I'd known about the skin earlier, and then maybe Jazz and Gizmo would still be alive. ~Sukerfish456

@Calisi
@Calisi 9 жыл бұрын
Lunari shel Usually you can see it in there eyes, just take a wet cloth and dab their eye, it makes the skin moist, so you can get it out eaiser. If it gets bad, I recommended a vet. They usually get the skin problem once they're a year old.

Sophie Wilson its not about that, leopard geckos whetheror female they need to be seperate they. i keep my leopard geckos on a rack in sterilite containers. if you want more geckos, with less space then keep them in tubs. they work great in a tub system. watch more videos. this guy makes good sense but i wouldn't risk the sand situation. they will eat at the sand looking for vitamins and minerals for there body and WILL cause impaction. even if you have a a vitamin/ calcium dish

Great video man. I was thinking about using sand, but only reason I stayed away from it was because in my opinion reptile carpet is easier to clean. Or at least for me its more convenient. I just switched my leos and my beardie to carpet instead of sand.

Why do you keep your leopard geckos on sand? I've done some research on this (and I talked about it in my videps) but I'm pretty sure that while some people have put adults on sand safely it's safer and more practical to use other substrates.

***** I agree with you on a lot of points! Leos are one of the most easiest geckos to keep. :) There are a lot of poor care videos out there, that's KZbin for you though! I've owned snakes for around 5 1/2 years and when I surf through a lot of videos I shake my head thinking, "Wow this is what they think is best for this animal?" I had my leopard geckos on sand when they were babies, one of them was doing quite well but the other one would purposely lick up the sand and I had no idea why! So I took them off of sand and put them on reptile carpet instead and they have been doing just fine. I've had my leos since they were babies and they have grown so rapidly! :) I want to say that you have it spot on my friend! Keep up the good work.

I'm with you about the sand. I raised my gecko on it from day 1, and she lived on it before I got her. The thing is, it's better to raise them on sand rather than introduce it to them later, just because they'll be used to it. I used to keep mine on sand but just switched due to a move a being unable to bring the big cage with me (very long story that I'd rather not get into). She's now living happily on paper towels and they've both worked fine.

Hey man, I just wanted to say thanks for this vid, a auto like from me, and if a leopard gecko was a game, I would be a noob at it. I got a reasonable sized tank and a washable grass type floor, a rock that goes deep so you can out in water, and a food bowl, and a vine for climbing. I am picking him up tomorrow and I'm prob gonna get another hidey hole for him judging by ur vid. And I thought sand was good because it seems like your buddy there liked it 😋 anyways, thanks for the great info and I'll see ya

+Taelyn Shelby get live bugs for food and NOT crickets. Crickets don't have much protein. If you can't get live food right away invest in a vibrating food dish because if something isn't moving they won't recognize it as food. I also wouldn't recommend sand, even reptile sand. It can get in their eyes so I recommend getting turf (you can get it in the reptile section at any pet store). I also get water conditioner for their drinking water to remove the chlorine. Also get a water dish big enough for them to sit in they enjoy water :) also get a heat lamp for one side of the tank to keep them warm and leave their water dish on the cool side of the tank :3 best of luck to you and your gecko ^.^

I just want to say a couple things as well as get some opinions. First off I'd say that i've had 2 leopard geckos, one that I raised to 13 yrs old on sand, he passed away(not due to impaction), and the other I was forced to sell, not seven years later I have my twenty gallon all set up and am getting my new Leo soon. First off, I'd say, just from handling my leopard geckos and being with them, they Are happier when you try to recreate their natural environment and give them room(a 20 gallon is perfect), (with in reason of your budget of course), and part of that for me was sand, and I know, leopard geckos don't live on a thick layer of sand in the wild, but thick slate tile wasn't around when I had them, and this is why they like it. Leopard geckoss absorb heat through their bottom primarily, this is why people use heat mats, but a heat Matt goes from hot to cold directly, in their natural environment, they are use to rocks heating up slowly from the sun, and then staying warm at night and gradualy cooling off after sunset, they are use to this heat/light cycle, especially if you are not using a heat mat, and even if you are, they are happiest when you mimic this, this is why I have always used sand, and layered it about two inches thick, the sand heats slowly with the lamps, and stays hot at night, but these days, you can mimic the same thing without the risk of impaction with slate tile. I will take this moment to say NEVER EVER EVER keep a juvenile or baby on sand, I have always used paper towels until they were just about full grown. So my concern is I am using lamps and already have lamps but am not able to get tile at my hardware store, and yes I have tried, and no they don't have them at my pet store, so I am probably going to use sand when it's an adult, and am wondering about others experiences keeping ADULTS on sand. 2, I really don't want to go through the whole cricket thing again, and was planning on using mealworms as a staple, because so many experienced legit breeders on youtube do it, but then my pet stores tell me I have to use crickets, and I am getting mixed opinions. Whadu yall think?

Good video Jake. I am new to leopard geckos, but have had herps most of my life. I got out of them a few years ago, but recently decided I missed having 'em around. I went with leopards for a couple reasons.. 1) I've always liked them and have never had one. And 2) Although I would dig on having a tegu or monitor, I don't think they would go well with the other animals in the house. Plus, once they started getting on the large side, my wife would freak out. Anyway, thanks for the video.

Leopard geckos are very often preyed on in the wild so you will notice that they will go to the bathroom in one place and eat their shed so they will not be detected, and these habits are exampled in captivity when your gecko goes to the bathroom in for example one corner all the time, (and it's a bonus because easy clean up)

I am not an expert, but if people have had leopard geckos die from accidentally consuming sand, I wouldn't take the risk just because that's how I've always done things. There's a first time for everything and I personally think it's silly to take a chance when it's not necessary. I wouldn't wait for my pet to be injured before I make a change. I just got my first leopard gecko four days ago. Again, I'm not an expert. But I was able to get slate tile cut to fit the size of the tank and it cost me $3. I can take it out, clean it, and put it back without trouble and I know my little guy will never eat it. This isn't an attack on the guy who made the video at all, but I don't advise people to take chances when there are cheap and easy alternatives available. Great video and cute gecko!! Just adding my two cents.
