We usually made a loaf of corn meal mush - let it sit over night in the fridge and then sliced and fried it for breakfast with grape jelly. yummmm.

Syrup on your grits ?! Say it ain't so Noreen! Lol ! Im a savory girl all the way. I have never had milk grits before but will give them a try. My mom will only eat old fashion grits because instant grits are not creamy enough. One of my favorite breakfasts is grits, eggs, and fried beef smoked sausage. When a smidge of sausage grease mixes with the grits on your plate... Sweet baby Jesus its delicious !

Oh I love Grits ...I lived in Jacksonville NC and tried them many ways and because I am from the North I of course love them with butter and real maple syrup...My son practically lived on grits as a baby and toddler...he asked for them constantly...he loved his "gits" lol

I love grits! I like to add just a hint of cream cheese and butter, or cheddar cheese. It adds a flavor that I really love. I don't make them often because as much as I love them my husband prefers rice for breakfast and I love him. Ya know how that goes.

I have a little story about grits. Growing up in New Jersey I never heard of such a thing. On my way to Florida I stopped at a diner for breakfast. I placed my order and the waitress said "you want grits with that?" I said what's a grit? She brought some and I've never looked back! Thank you.

@NoreensKitchenOriginal7 жыл бұрын
We have many local grist mills where you can go and purchase fresh ground grits and corn meal. However it is difficult to find any that actually have organic corn products as well as corn grown from GMO seed. I will not consume GMO corn so that is why I purchase the Bob's Red Mill because it is non GMO.

Always Enjoy watching you and educating me in American cuisine ,would this be a similar to a basic porridge from this side of the pond ? Served much the same with salt or milk . For some reason I always thought grits were offal of some sort. Thx 🇮🇪
@NoreensKitchenOriginal7 жыл бұрын
If I am not mistaken, porridge is typically oatmeal? At least that is what I believe. Grits are much like any other hot cereal. However corn mush which can also be called porridge is made from a much finer grind of cornmeal. Cream of wheat or "farina" is similar to grits as far as texture goes. Porridge is a term generally used to describe any type of thick starchy substance that is hot and cooked very well. Porridge can be made from wheat, corn, peas, oats or other types of grain or starchy dried legume.

I always clean my grits before cooking by rinsing it several times in cold water to get rid of as many of the dark specks in the grits as possible.
@NoreensKitchenOriginal7 жыл бұрын
That is fiber. I leave it. Doesn’t bother me
@germyw7 жыл бұрын
The dark spots are part of the hominy or corn. It's not debris as you my find in rice.

@songbird5017 жыл бұрын
To each his or her own. It’s just something that is done where I’m from to the point that it’s considered a no-no if you don’t “wash your grits” before you cook them lol. Everyone’s not the same, and that’s okay. It’s not as if the 11th commandment is “thou shalt not wash your grits” lol.
