How to Destroy HERPES | Dr. Mandell

The immune system can and does fight all herpes infections. When an individual contracts herpes, the immune system responds in multiple ways. Both the innate and adaptive immune responses take place. Infected cells can release signaling molecules detected attracting immune cells that can kill infected cells. Antibodies against the virus are produced that will neutralize any virus in the blood.
What the immune system can not do is eliminate the virus from nerve cells, these are usually immune privileged sites and the virus can become latent there. The virus can sometimes block the production of signal molecules so that the infected cell is not identified by the immune system.
The immune system is constantly, actively working against the virus which why cold sores appear when people have other infection that the immune system is responding to.
Sunburn can temporally wipe out immune system cells in the skin, allowing the virus to break latency and spread to other cells, causing sores.

Thanks, I get the outbreaks on my lips, usually after a fever or extreme cold. After a diagnoses of pre diabetes, I eliminated most carbs and sugars, also adopted a healthy eating with plenty of veggies, fish, some meat, good oils. The last time I got a cold sore, I went to a pharmacy to get some medication for it. The pharmacist didn’t sell me anything. Instead, he said I should put ice on the sore especially when you feel that first tingle. Keep icing it throughout the day. I couldn’t believe how something so simple was so effective. I have oral herpes, probably unknowingly given to me by my mother as an infant or toddler, who also had it. As a boy I would get horrific outbreaks. One time as a teen, my whole mouth was inflamed and infected and it took weeks to heal.... and in such formidable years, my embarrassment was inescapable. I got cold sores from my Aunt when I was just a toddler and people told me they were caused by stress but I noticed that every Christmas when I got Lip Smackers lip balms I would get an outbreak. I stopped using those but then any other product that had beeswax would give me a cold sore. Finally cutting out beeswax skin products entirely made them mostly go away. I also found out when I started using a tanning bed that sun exposure caused them, so I started using a SPF lip balm (without beeswax of course) and then the only other thing that I've noticed is when I am dehydrated and my lips are dry and peeling then it might trigger one. Basically any trauma to the lips and I think with the beeswax it might be because the skin can't breathe. I try to keep my lips from getting dry with a lip oil. I take tons of lysine when I get one. Honestly, my Aunt who gave them to me goes around giving them to people on purpose because she is mad she has them and no one is seriously looking for a cure. I was being accused of being a slut already in elementary school over someone in my family giving them to me on purpose with the mindset that a cure would come faster if more people had to go around feeling like their lip was sliced open. I wouldn't wish this on anyone so I am very careful. Before covid I'd get dirty looks for wearing a mask so that I wasn't doing stuff like touching my mouth and then touching things other people would touch and spreading it, during covid that stopped, but now if I wore a mask I'd get dirty looks by people thinking I was paranoid about covid. I really hope someone finds a cure. There is all this stuff about not mocking people for illnesses but my whole life people have acted like it is totally acceptable for people to call me a whore for having cold sores and I'm always seeing people in mainstream media and at award shows and stuff who talk about it like people who have it should be avoided entirely. It's really cruel to people who got it as children long before even knowing what anything sexual was. It shouldn't even be called an STD. I did not get it from kissing or sex. She drank out of the same cup as me.

Just want to add an Amen to what the good doctor Mandell has said here. I've suffered from type 1 since I was about 12 years old. Cold sores around my lips, up my nose, and on my face. About 20 years ago I had an outbreak so bad that when a coworker saw me he was aghast, it was bad! I will vouch for stress, and sugar being a major cause in my outbreaks. When I followed the GAPS diet and healed my gut - creating a better gut flora, I never had an outbreak. Also, my local DC recommends the Standard Process 6-3-6 protocol of Calcium, Cataplex F and Cataplex C, which I've used for close to 20 years with great success. Again, I know sugar is a major cold sore trigger for me. And I'll be dam'd but I've got a cold sore right now, and I think shaving hard and close (irritating the skin) has caused this one and others in the past, but mostly sugar and stress. Ice and Raw Garlic...if you catch it in the beginning. This has worked for me many times!! If you feel that tingle or it's small and at the beginning stages, rub it with an ice cube and freeze it. Then grab a peice of garlic and rub it in small circles. I had 3 cold sores all of a sudden start to appear, grabbed the garlic and ice, disappeared completely. Agreed to improve the immune system and limit arginine, in cashews. Lysine 500mg 1x day and many do not get an outbreak of either but if under stress take am & pm. If you get an outbreak put 1 dime worth of coconut oil and a couple drops of tea tree oil and apply 2-3x day to outbreak area. Keep all skin in area moisturized. Ice helps some. Many families pass it to their children or within the family, be careful who you let kiss on your children as many are not aware they are carriers.

I use several of your suggestions topically at the first sign of a cold sore, fresh garlic, oil of oregano. I alternate the applications with licorice root tincture. Of course your suggestion of eating a very healthy diet is a must for me. When I had the c virus I got several cold sores on my mouth. I started to treat them before they even erupted, but the sores still appeared and took another week after the virus was gone for them to heal. Scabs are the worst and I found for myself to apply my calendula infused oil, licorice root tincture and stinging nettle tincture several times daily. This helped with no scaring. Thanks, Doc!!!! This is good info for any suffering from this nasty bug. I've been dealing with it for 25 years. A combination of excessive exposure, stress, lack of sleep and my old diet of SUGAR and peanuts with chocolate did me in every time. It was a guaranteed outbreak. Although I miss peanuts and peanut butter, I don't regret getting them out of my diet. Acidophilus (like in yogurt) and L-Lysine I found to be invaluable when the tell-tale 'signs' began to show up. If I nailed it down right then, took these into my body and RESTED WELL, many times it would pass without incident. I played around with trying to eat peanut butter sandwiches with sugary jelly and inevitably it would lay me low every time. FOOD is important. I hardly ever have outbreaks anymore. When I do, it's because I neglected my diet, rest and stress levels. Learning the FUNDAMENTAL 'way' to properly BREATH has been the most fundamental thing for stress and healing. There are books such as The Law of Rhythmic Breath that teach the proper 'yogic breath' of filling the belly first, then the chest and finally the upper 'clavicular' area. I had not been breathing properly for my entire adult life as I was a smoker. That addiction typically only fills the upper lungs and does not utilize the majority of lungs cells for bringing oxygen into the body (let alone the detractors of smoking itself). It's important to take the l-lysine (1000 mg) 45 to 60 minutes before your first meal of the day. You can also take another 500 to 1000 mg before your last meal. Regarding sleep, I find that 2 capsules of magnesium glycinate taken in the evening works much better than just one.

I use Lysine every time. I feel my lips get dry, or a tingling sensation in my lip. I take Lysine and I never get the fever blister. If the fever blister comes, lets say, overnight, I load up by taking 4 lysine 3 times a day. The fever blister is gone in days and with much less discomfort. I have never found anything better. A colleague once told me she takes one lysine every day with her vitamin and hasn't has a fever blister in years. I never heard of monolaurin -- I'll look it up.

As soon as you feel 'the tingle' lick the terminals and place the terminals over the tingle Keep blasting your lip in bursts for as long as you can bear until the tingle goes away. At night (during an attack) set an alarm and repeat every 3-4 hours. The tingle will try different points on your lips - don't let the tingle go unpunished.
