Stellar tutorial 🏆 Yes, there is a multi-angle edit I'd like to know how to do. I'm not using a separate audio recorder. Normally I do a 3 camera shoot (3 angles), so I import 3 video files. Angle-1 has the best quality audio. .... My Question: How do I switch between angles but always use the audio attached to angle-1 ?
@Brad_West3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! 😊 When you drop the full multicam on your timeline you can right click on it and set your Active Audio angle to angle 1 with the good audio. In your multicam window, make sure you have it set to only change the video angle and not the audio angle when you make cuts and then it will always keep angle 1 as your audio source 😊

@@Brad_West I'm trying to match footage from S5mII V log and G9 V Log L. The colors are similar enough, I was trying to adjust the exposure and brightness a bit because full frame vs micro 4/3s but as long as I have the exposure settings exactly the same or one F stop down and one level of ISO down with the G9, the footage looks close enough. Now, I am trying to match different interview locations with slightly different lighting, that is the real challenge. I have a 5600k light on the subject roughly at the same distsance away in each location, but the ambient lighting, I can't really control that. Do you have any video tips on that?
@Brad_West Жыл бұрын
@@kyleledotnet I don't have any videos specific to that issue, but what you'll want to try is to use a shape mask on the subject for the interview. You can then grade the inside mask (subject) differently from the outside mask (the background where the ambient lighting is different). At around 1:14 in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJfIYmiHqNt2htE I show the inside/outside using a color mask. The principle is the same, but you can use the shape mask. Hope that helps!

Thanks for this crisp tutorial. I have started a 4 camera Multicam edit, each camera having more than 1 hour of recording time. Have transcoded to proxy while importing, and, I have this doubt: how to optimise the media after finishing the editing and before sharing the project?
@Brad_West2 жыл бұрын
Using the drop down in your view window you can set the playback options from proxy back to optimized media. Then I would do a color grade if necessary to try to match the camera angles. I would suggest doing that inside the multicam so you’re only grading 4 clips as opposed to each clip in the main timeline. Hope that helps 😊🤞🏼

I am using 2 iPhones for by B and C roll, and my main camera is a Sony A7rv. The two iPhones have the same color profile but I need to match it as close as possible to my Sony. When should I color correct and or apply luts? Should I color correct and match each footage first, and then "multicam" it? And then apply the final lut on the multicam? Or color correct and color match each video, apply the lut, and then multicam it?
@Brad_West3 ай бұрын
I would make the multicam as the first step. Do your edit, swapping between angles, etc. Then double click on the multicam clip to go inside and then grade each camera angle. I would personally do all my grading inside the multicam and not in the timeline ON the multicam if that makes sense. Hope that helps!

@@Brad_West You are 100% a gem! Thank you SO MUCH! Yes makes perfect sense. I was doing the total opposite. I was 1st color correcting each clip. I have a question about multi-cam editing. A few years ago I shot a sporting event with two cameras. The main camera was a prosumer camcorder that recorded 4K video at 29.97 fps. The second camera was an iPhone, which recorded 4K video at 30 fps. While the difference between 29.97 and 30 fps is very slight, it's enough to cause one stream to drift gradually out of sync with the other. At the time I produced this event, I didn't yet know how to use FCP's multi-cam editor. So I just took the footage from the main camera and laid it on the primary storyline, and then I took the footage from the iPhone and laid it on top as a connected clip. I synced the two up using spikes of audio I could clearly see in the waveforms. Getting the two clips in sync was not that hard. But every 10 or 15 seconds, it would fall a frame or two out of sync. Since I didn't stay on one shot for more than a few seconds, this discrepancy wasn't obvious to anyone watching the finished edit, but only because after each cut of the video, I would nudge the connected clip to the right on the timeline a frame or two to get it back into sync in time for it being used for the next edit. I'm wondering how these differing frame rates would have affected my ability to put these two clips into a single multi-cam clip container so I could use FCP's multi-cam editing capability. I'm guessing I would have needed to convert the 30fps clip to 29.97 first before putting the two clips into one clip container. But would that even work? Since after all, once the fraction of a frame is gone, it's gone. I guess my question is simply this: How does the multi-cam function work of you've got two clips whose frame rates are fractionally different? Here was the final edit when I synced everything up manually,, which worked alright. But I've been hesitant to try this again without buying another camera that shoots in 29.97 to match the other one. This show is something I do strictly for fun, with a budget of $0. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIDcgXeFeNBqo9k
@Brad_West2 жыл бұрын
That’s a tricky one. I’ve resolved a similar sync drift issue in the past by doing the following: Find a spike on the audio on both clips near the beginning and make a marker on both clips. Go to the end and find another spike and make markers on both clips again at the spike. On the 30fps clip, hit Cmd R to open up your retime editor and retime the clip until the markers at the end line up perfectly. Make sure the markers at the beginning still line up. That should fix the sync drift issue 😊👍🏼

Great instructional video. If you were to record audio on a separate device, what format should you record in? Should it always be WAVE or can you use mp3 etc?
@Brad_West3 жыл бұрын
Great question Peter 😊 MP3 would be fine but I would always recommend WAV files instead because audio is captured at a higher bit depth. The quality will be much better, especially if you are going to be adding a bunch of audio plugins like a denoiser, compressor or EQ for example. By recording WAV files you give those plugins more “data” to work with. Hope that helps 😊

Great Video Brad, may i ask you how can i do a picture in picture with multicam? My Use case: i have a Microsoft Teams Recording, 2 Camera Live Recordings and one clean Audio file. I would love to switch between the presenter, Guests and the presentation. Thanks in advance!!
@Brad_West2 жыл бұрын
Hey Dennis! Glad you enjoyed it. I would drop the multicam clip on the time and then duplicate the clip on top of itself (using Alt + Click and drag) and make sure that they stay in sync with each other. Mute the audio on the top clip and scale it down and reposition it to get the picture-in-picture look you want. Then every time you want to swap angles, you can make a cut on both clips and change the angle from 1 to 2 on the main clip and from 2 to 1 on the PiP clip. When you change angles you might lose the scale and position parameters so you can copy the PiP clip where the scale and position is correct and then paste attributes using (Cmd Shift V) to the rest of the PiP clips on top of the main clip. Hope that was clear enough and that it helps 😄🤞🏼

I've moved my audio file to the top and also selected the blue speakers, and untagged it the video with the audio clip I want to avoid. Any tips, shortcuts to help?
@Brad_West3 жыл бұрын
When you’re in the multicam the blue speaker is just to monitor the audio, it doesn’t change the actual audio track. When you’re in the timeline however, you can right click on the multicam clip and select the audio angle to change it. Let me know if that helps?
@MyHomeFarm3 жыл бұрын
@@Brad_West Cool. I’ll try that in the morning. If I have three sources plus the audio, should the blue button be selected on all clips to monitor all of them? One other question. What happens if one of my sources had additional video (just a few seconds more) in the middle of the video than the other two source? If I blade and remove content, will it affect lip syncing further down the line.
@MyHomeFarm3 жыл бұрын
@@Brad_West And I guess my other question is what is the blue speaker monitoring for? Is it anyway syncing?
@Brad_West3 жыл бұрын
So the little blue speaker is just to monitor playback within the multicam. It’s basically a way to listen to each track (or more than one track at the same time) while you are in the multicam. It doesn’t affect your edit at all. If you’re removing a section of the multicam in your timeline, it won’t affect sync. But if you mean, removing a section within the multicam clip it might affect sync. But it depends. Are both sides of what you want to remove currently in sync?

@Brad_West Жыл бұрын
In that case I would go with the lowest frame rate (29,97fps) and there shouldn’t be a noticeable issue with 30fps footage. If you’re syncing 60fps footage I wouldn’t slow it down in the multicam clip. FCP will play it back just fine on a 29,97 or 30fps timeline by just dropping every second frame. 😄👍🏼

Will FCPX detect that and pull those clips apart to account for this?
@Brad_West3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Jack 😊 Yes, FCPX will detect that and will keep that gap. Glad you found value in this video! To go back to your timeline, you can simply click the back arrow at the top of your timeline (next to the name of the multicam clip or timeline). Alternatively you can double click on the timeline in your browser window to go back 😄👍🏼
@aelbj Жыл бұрын
@@Brad_West Thanks for the reply. No matter what I try (back arrow, double click, etc.) it all stays as multiple clips without reverting to a single multicam on the timeline. I have 6 clips plus separate audio. However, the B rolls start and stop throughout as the camera person was walking around with a gimble. Maybe I need to go back to the old way but multicam seems so much faster. Sigh . . .
@Brad_West Жыл бұрын
I’d suggest creating a new timeline and then dropping the multicam from the browser window directly onto the timeline. That should do it. Let me know if you’re still struggling?
@aelbj Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. I still can't get it to work. Perhaps it's because I went in on individual clips, did some cropping and time alignment and I screwed it up big time. Maybe I'll just go back to magnetic timeline. It will be harder to sync external audio but it may beat banging my head against a wall. I had great hopes for multicam. Sigh . . .

You can right click on the multicam clip and choose the audio angle of your choice. If you have already started cutting up the multicam clip, then you can select all of the instances of the multicam and head over to the audio properties in the inspector window. At the bottom you can select your audio source by checking the correct angle and unchecking the audio you don’t want. I hope that helps. 🤞🏼

Thank you both for your help. When selecting clips for a new Multicam clip, I have run into a problem. I have some clips from Oct 3rd and others from Oct 5th. But, on Oct 5th I created a Multicam clip. So, now when I try to select 2 clips from Oct 3rd and 1 clip from Oct 5th, FXP automatically selects the Multicam clip (that I created on 10.5) with the desired selected clip from 10.5....therefore, I can't create the new Multicam clip. I am currently using the shift button to select the clips. How can I select the 3 desired clips without the Multicam clip automatically being selected. I do not want to delete the Multicam clip. it is part of the project I am working on. thank you

I would suggest using the Cmd key instead of the shift key. Select the first clip you want to add into the new multicam clip and then Cmd-click on the rest. That way you should be able to select everything except the other multicam clip. Hope that helps! 😊🤞🏼

Will this still work if each camera started and stopped filming at different and multiple times throughout the whole recording?? 👀😅

Yes it will. Although if you stop and start a lot, it would be best to select all of the clips from Cam A in the browser window, then head to your inspector window, click on the I for info button, and scroll down to "Camera Name" and type Cam A. Do that for Cam B, Cam C, etc and then FCP will keep each camera angle on it's own track in the multicam clip.

How do you switch between angles using the timeline? Personally I think having the only way you can switch between angles is to do so like it was a live video shoot is ridiculous for a professional level program.

You can click on each angle in the angle viewer using the mouse, you can use the shortcut keys 1, 2, 3, etc or you can write click on each clip and change the video angle from there.

what if there r multiple takes in the camera angles ? how to organise then ?

You can put all of those angles on the same track in the multicam and they will stay in order. In the browser window, if you select all the clips from one angle, you can type in a camera name in the inspector window. Do this for each camera angle and your multicams will stay organized and will sync faster 😄

@@Brad_West you know how we review multiple angles on a specific spot by playing that area over and over again? I have to keep an eye on the various multi cam angles while pausing and playing the vdo with the spacebar with my left thumb while using the mouse pointer on the starting position with my right hand using the mouse or trackpad. I get tired of the mouse/touchpad click to put the playback head back where i am reviewing it from. It gets arduous when comping a full length music vdo with 30 angles lol.. if i could freeze the in or start position of the playback somehow it would be awesome. Hey I transfer audio from Garage band to fcp x .. and then I combine the video and audio and I get proper lip sync at the beginning but later after 5 minutes of the video the video is one step forward than the audio and theres a lag .. How can I combine video and audio properly from the beginning till the end ??
@Brad_West4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you’re dealing with a audio drift problem. This often happens if the audio (on your case from Garage Band) has a sample rate of 44.1kHz and you bring it into FCPX. The sample rate for video is 48kHz so over time the audio will drift out of sync. Try to export the audio out of Garage Band at 48kHz instead to see if that solves your problem. 😊 If you’re still experiencing a sync drift issue then you can manually fix the drift. Make a marker on both clips near the beginning where the sync is perfect, then go to the end and find a specific word on your video and make a marker. Find that exact point in the audio file and make another marker. Select the audio clip and hit Cmd + R to open up your retiming options. Drag the handle on the audio clip until the markers at the end match. You will most likely be retiming the audio from 100% to 99%. Make sure your markers at the beginning match up and the markers at the end match up. That should fix the drift. Let me know if that works for you 😊👍🏼

Please tell me, is there a way to make "picture in picture" in multicam mode? I'm making tutorial guide videos and when showing me a screen record I would like to show my face in the corner. When my multicam video is ready I can add a new video above my multicam, but it would be synchronized. If there is some tip for this particular case?
@Brad_West2 жыл бұрын
If you have the video of your face inside the multicam you can duplicate the multicam on top of itself and switch the top layer to the angle with your face. You can then scale that down to create the picture in picture. The easiest way to create the Picture in Picture is to drop the video on top of your multicam and the you can scale it down, crop it or even use the shape mask to create a circle. Hope that helps! 🤞🏼

As I found out, problem with Multicam edit is that you cannot export this to DaVinci for Color Grading meaning if your workflow is - FCPX -> Davinci -> FCPX you have stay within FCPX, unless someone found a way around?
@Brad_West3 жыл бұрын
I do all my grading in FCPX so I’ve never tried to take it into Resolve. If the XML route doesn’t work I can only think of exporting individual clips to grade in Resolve but that will probably be far more hassle than it’s worth. I’d be interested to know if anyone else has a workaround 😊
