Everyone is making fun of a man who strapped what looks to be at least an 25 lbs to himself and jumped into a pool knowing he could not swim. This is courage, he did not fail anything.

Right? Many people think that swimming is a natural skill , but I've been through similar training like this in Marine Corps boot camp and seen people flail quickly because of fear of drowning. This is a serious fear! Having to keep your rifle on you , thus limited your arms' range puts a real damper on anyone's confidence. You'll also have boots, a helmet, and full uniform on so that adds lots of weight. This guy will survive. He'll get his confidence soon. Full faith.

I agree with Mitch the man may possibly know how to swim but the weapon, ammo and armour with boots will definantly weigh him down and even joining and risking his life in future combat takes more courage than most people have

fear is an obstacle like all other things. This man was unable to overcome and adapt. In my Basic course we had a few fail the combat swim portion...but they didnt take the first fail as the end all. they tried again and kicked some ass. I hope this guy succeeded later on.

+Alex Henderson You learn a lot about overcoming fear during training. I was Army, not Navy, doing my 15 week OSUT course (basic + infantry training rolled into one course, as opposed to 10 weeks in basic and then separate AIT). I remember being scared shitless on the Eagle Tower. You have to climb a bunch of 2x4's up a fifty or sixty (it was five years ago I don't remember which it was) foot tall tower. Then you rappel down it secured by a rope harness with a couple carabiners and knots holding it together that you just learned how to make yourself. Besides the visceral "do not do this" feeling you get when you lean back off the tower the first time (which was more intense than I had expected), I managed to fuck up about 15' from the ground. I pushed off just slightly harder or later with one leg than the other, and so when I swung back towards the tower I was no longer feet forward and slammed into it sideways. When that happened, I obviously couldn't control my balance with my legs anymore, and ended up with my head about 3/4 of the way pointed towards the ground. So I was REALLY hoping my harness didn't give or I didn't slip out of it and crack my skull/break my neck. I managed to get to the ground, albeit by short drops and hand breaking. Because I didn't rappel down the tower properly that first time, I was sent back up again by my drill sergeant. After the first incident instead of just being nervous when I got to the top, I was genuinely frightened. My muscles felt like jelly. But I had to go again. My emotions were screaming "you're going to die if you fuck up again and your muscles are so tired you're arms are shaking". I knew logically it was unlikely I'd die or anything, but emotions don't always listen to logic, especially when you're flooded with adrenaline. But, I went again and got it right. Maybe it would have seemed cruel to send somebody who's obviously scared shitless to go do the exact thing that's terrifying them. But that's how you overcome fear. By facing it. If I were physically able to (my spine is now fucked up so I'm not able to do a lot), I'd go do it again now, without the fear, because I've overcome it.

first not even close to seal training. second this is army water confidence training. you jump in with all of your gear and you take it off when you start to sink and swim to the surface. obviously he does not know how to swim and freaked out because of sinking and not being able to ditch his gear. does not make him a failed navy seal, does not make him a bad soldier, does not make him a black stereotype. I don't see any of you taking that step with full ACUs and Load bearing equipment.

First off.. this is probably a junior ROTC.. or a basic training class.. in order to be a SEAL you have to already be in the Navy and they make sure you have the basic idea of swimming before you go any further.. Second its ironic to me that trolls at home who spend hours daily watching military vids are clowing someone trying to be out there doing it foreel. You should thank this man. He's fighting so you and your 64oz big gulp and bag of chips can be consumed while you sit behind the safety of your keyboard and monitor

This looks like a training procedure done in some National Guard Recruit Sustainment Program (RSP) drills prior to Basic. The fellow is not attempting SEAL training, but the title is still correct--doing that will fail you. The truth of the matter is that Black males have a much harder time swimming and floating due to denser bone and muscle structure. Consider how few Black males compete in Olympic swimming, while they excel at all the land sports. A Marine relative of mine who has worked as a public pool lifeguard told me that Blacks were far more likely to need rescuing than Whites. And the place actually kept such records. A retired Marine colonel explained how Black Marines in training would all be taken to a pool one day and "qualified," whether they actually passed swimming qualifications or not. Just like the one fellow says at the end, "Believe it or not, you were swimming."

This is part of the army's combat water survival test. There's 5 or 6 events total, including treading water for time, jumping off the high dive blindfolded w/ weapon, swimming w/ gear and weapon (which was the event here) for distance, swimming for time, and one or two others I can't think of off the cuff. Had to do this every semester for ROTC. Not a lot of fun for nonswimmers and weak swimmers.

It's actually easier than you think. Step 1: Open the top part of your blouse. Step 2: Slap down on top of the water and push the air into your blouse and create a pocket. Step 3: Float. This is taught at Navy bootcamp during the swim qual portion. Now it might not help as much with a lot of extra weight, but its better than nothing.
