Making a fast mold. Molds used for production should use Tooling Gelcoat and have at least 7 - 10 layers of fiberglass. For the video, I used regular white gelcoat and about 3 layers of fiberglass.

It's a resin that is usually colored. It is UV stable where as most polyester resins are not. It also provides a sandable and paintable surface for fiberglass parts.

@guidofernandez It is chop strand matt so tearing it doesn't hurt it's strength. It's just short strands of glass held together by a binder so it can be made into rolls and sheets, but the binder dissolves when you saturate it with resin. A single piece conforming to curves like in this part would have wrinkles that want to stand up. This is basically a way of adding relief cuts to the glass.

Thanks man. You can buy Gelcoat from local composite shops usually. There are also suppliers like CompositeOne and Fiberglast(dot)com (that's the correct spelling, not a typo). Local shops will probably be a little cheaper though. If you have any other questions, just ask.

@guidofernandez Cloth gives strength in just 2 directions. You turn cloth layers 45 degrees when you layer them to get strength in 4 directions. Chop strand matt is strong in all directions because of the random directions the glass strands run in. When I make a part that is only going to be 1 or 2 layers I always use chop strand matt because the part would be too flimsy with 1 to 2 layers of cloth.

Thanks for you video! To be even better, I should shot that video with a clock to see the different operations time and intervals. I'm trying to built a mold but I'm having priblems with gelcoat. I believe that a sould let it cure a bit before apply the first layer of resin. The result is the roving smashes the gelcoat film (because I don't let it cure a bit) and the mold surface is showing in some parts the fibers...

@CarbonGlassMan
@CarbonGlassMan 12 жыл бұрын
You roll it right away. The color change is because I edited out the beginning of the rolling process and just put the end of it in this video. It does change color a little as the layers build up and as the resin starts to cure or "kick off" as I call it. I'm glad the video helps. Just don't get frustrated and start out with small easy projects. Use acetone to clean your rollers and other tools and also to get the resin off of you if you get any on yourself.

@Buckley128 Search KZbin for "How To Fiberglass - Two Part Mold Construction - #1 Flanging" and watch that video. That is a better example of how a motorcycle tank might be done. Basically yes, making a part is just the same process. Everything that was done to the original part in order to make the mold, should be done to the mold in order to make a new part. To be safe, I wax heavily for the first 3 to 5 parts. After that the mold is "seasoned" & not as much wax will be needed. My opinion.

You wait for the gelcoat to dry enough to where it is tacky or sticky to the touch but it doesn't transfer the gelcoat to your finger. If it is still transferring then it is too wet. Tanks man!

Excellent video.. one to save. I like the fact you speeded up the sanding etc. It's the technique involved that's interesting. Need to know what to use inbetween on the INSIDE of a fibre glass cowl to make another so that the two pieces seperate easily. Would 'cling film' work? So sorry to hear of your friend.. his song is beautiful. I've just lost two good friends of mine. Life is so fragile.
@CarbonGlassMan

Do you mean to release the inside of a cowl? If so, PVA, which is a liquid that dries to a film will work for that. Thanks. I am glad you enjoyed the video. I will make more like this in the future.

What is the time between the fiberglassing and using the roller? On your video you see the mold turn more brown/yellowish, but what time was that after you finished puttin on the fiberglass? What is the name of that? What brand or howd you call that even if its not branded? According to hardwares i ask in our country, we don't have that, :( so i used PR1MERO brand to make fiberglass mat stick to things i used. But in your country howd you call it if its not branded and if it has a brandname? Thanks babyGNP♥ I'LL wait for you answer :)

thanks for sharing the videos with us please i have two questions for you first one is how much time between the five coats of wax ? the second question why i found it hard to stick the fiber glass on the gel coat like you did now ?
@CarbonGlassMan
@CarbonGlassMan 8 жыл бұрын
+tracychapman1000 It depends on the temperature, but basically, when the wax dries, wipe it off with a clean cloth and apply another coat of wax. I don't know if I understand your second question. After the gelcoat cures. It should be sticky to the touch without transferring gelcoat to your finger, BUT if it completely dries, that's ok too. Then you just put the resin and fiberglass on the gelcoat. It will bond chemically, so no need to sand the gelcoat.

Once you have the mold made, you basically repeat the whole process to make a dupe of the original, correct? Do you re-wax the mold with 5 layers every time you make a new part? I'm considering making a CF tank shield for my motorcycle, I just don't want to cause any permanent damage to the tank when making the mold, and due to the bulky nature of the tank, can't really make a 'base' for the mold like you were able to do.

Could of questions: What kind of gel coat did you use? Was there any catalyst used for the gel coat? What was the mix ratio? Was this epoxy or polyester resin? Why didn't you use PVA on the mold? How long did you let the gel coat dry before applying the fiber mesh? Rather than add music, why not just narrate the video?

Why did you cut/rip the fiberglass mat into several pieces before laying it in and wetting it out? Doesn't a single piece wrapped around make the part stronger than 2 individual pieces overlapped at the middle?
