Today I show you how to fix that awful sounding noise coming from your late model Samsung French Door Style Refrigerator. I see there's been lots of issues with this and I give my best educated guess as to why I think this is such a problem on Samsung model refrigerators today.

Thanks for the solution. I fixed mine this morning without taking anything apart, but just unplugging and taking the food out to leave the doors open for 2 hours. I'm sure it didn't thaw all the ice but it stopped the noise.

One follow-up from a few weeks later. When you defrost all that water, don't let it all drain into the tube at the bottom. Use a towel or bowl to catch it. I let it drain and it ended up as a huge sheet of ice in the bottom of the freezer drawer which interfered with the drawer opening.

Just so you know this video helped me solve my problem. I had a hard time removing the big inside cover. I was able to remove the bottom portion of the cover but the top was seemed stuck. So I used a mirror to see what the problem was. I discovered mine was so iced up that the ice had attached itself to a piece of metal on the back of the top part of the inside cover. So with the bottom wedged open, I blew the hairdryer for about 5-10 mins until I was able to safely remove the cover without forcing or breaking it. After that, everything went smoothly. Now my refrigerator is quiet and working perfectly! THANK YOU!!!

So glad it helped. If you have the issue again, you can use the manual "Forced Defrost" mode to avoid using the blow dryer on the plastic cover. I have a video on that too if you don't know how to set up that function. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKWpiJ6Nr7GGp8k

Great video, super helpful! I just wanted to add that if it gets too frozen inside there, the insulation on the inside of the back wall liner that you pop-off to expose the ice covered innards can freeze to the ice so it can take some fines to get it out. Thanks again!

A very big THANK YOU to you, James. Our 4 year old Samsung French Door Style Refrigerator started making fan noise a few days ago. The symptoms were exactly as you described in your video. By closely following your instructions, I was able to remove the panel and get to the cooling coil without much difficulty. With the help of a hair dryer, I got rid of the ice in about 15 to 20 minutes. I put everything back and the noise is gone. The whole operation took me about an hour. You saved me a lot of trouble. Thanks again.

did you have to do it again at some point? or was it a permannet fix
@kalvalakuzhy8164
@kalvalakuzhy8164 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnnycroat Unfortunately, it was not a permanent fix. The same problem came after a few months. I did it again and that too lasted only a few months. Third time, I insulated the exposed part of the cooling coils with 1/2 inch pipe insulation and that lasted several months. It is now building ice inside the refrigerator, near the area of the cooling coil. I also found there is a class action suit against Samsung for this very issue. It looks like there is a design flaw of some kind. My fridge is only 5 years old. My previous Whirlpool fridge lasted over 20 years without any trouble.

Two months after the two year warranty expired on my side by side Samsung fridge freezer it started making the same noise! I put up with it for three or four days then after doing a little research found your video. Thanks so much for making and posting it! While I was trying to summon the enthusiasm to dismantle it I did a bit more research it occurred to me to try moving the unit a bit further away from the wall as the user manual calls for a 5cm gap but I only had around 1cm as space is quite tight. By the next afternoon the noise had stopped and it hasn't come back so it might be worth people confirming that they are following the manufacturers recommendations before diving in. Presumably the compressor was having to overwork because it wasn't able to get rid of the heat. It is also summer here at the moment and we have had a few 30 degree plus days.

Our Samsung is a SIDE BY SIDE... but same noise, same solution, just a DIFFERENT SPOT... it was down behind the drawers on ours (on the fridge side). After pulling the shelves, removing about 7 screws, I was able to get to it... and it was SOLID ICE that I had to chip out (large chunks). Then used warm water and a heat gun to get all the rest off. Those yellow sponge towels soaked everything up)... we cleaned it all up, reassembled it, plugged everything back in, and VIOLA - as good as new. Used the 'POWER CHILL' to get it back down to temperature. THANK YOU... and you are 100% correct, there just isn't any defrosting 'wire' in the area is really needs to be. If it happens again in less than a couple years, I'll look at added into the 'heat wire' so it can better defrost itself in the future.

Great video! Thank you ! I have the same model and it has iced up twice in the last 4 years causing the refrigerator to stop cooling. Samsung service under Bestbuy warranty tore out and replaced the whole thing the first time and it lasted about 1 year before I heard the fan icing up and finally stopping. I'm glad I kept my old 20+ year old Amana self defrosting unit in the garage as a backup. Pretty sad Samsung couldn't engineer a descent, reliable unit. It certainly is not rocket science. What it comes down to is you have to defrost your refrigerator manually. The freezer is separate and it has already stopped cooling once forcing me to empty the entire unit again and unplug it for 2+ hours to let the compressor "decompress?". Luckily, the freezer started working after that. Oh yes, and the ice maker went out and was repaired 1 month before the unit went off BestBuy's extended warranty. BTW Bestbuy did a terrific job taking care of me while it was under their warranty. Samsung service wants $150 before they'll even come out to look at their P.O.S My best advise to anyone is *DO NOT BUY A SAMSUNG REFRIGERATOR!* Get an LG or what ever company hasn't been swallowed up by the big greedy bottom line corporations .

Hi John, Thanks for a great job with this video. I started with another similar video, but I got stuck trying to remove the bottom tray. I did another search and found this video. I could never have gotten that out (in one piece) without your help! Even with your help, it was a BEAR! You really saved my bacon and I am VERY appreciative. Now, if I can only figure out two more things: How to remove the ice tray to get rid of (what surely is) a bunch of melted cubes; and how to disassemble the drawers to remove the dirt on the bottom caught between the drawer front and the piece it slides into. Perhaps another short video???

I had the exact same problem on a RF28HFEDBSR which I tackled today. Thanks for you video, there are several others out there and many pissed off Samsung customers, add me to the list. In my case things were worse which others might have either missed, or not had, but in the area of ice build up the expansion process of freezing ice had actually damaged the fridge walls in the local area and there were several cracks which I believe are going to make the issue worse going forward. I did not attempt to repair them as I am going to research a solution which can be effected with in a short time and with no health issues like bad smell of silicon etc. I will certainly not purchase another Samsung product and will be sure family and friends are aware of this as well.

You have the same problem we have. You're limited what refrigerator you can buy. Like Our house you can't get anything bigger than that hole. My kitchen looks almost like yours. We have cabinets that look just like yours and we keep a toaster oven in the same place. :) Great video. We stopped our noisy fan yesterday. A long process but better than paying $150.00 to have someone come and do it. And you still have to take everything out of your refrigerator and put it back in yourself.

Called Samsung and spoke with an adviser who said to unplug it, open all the doors and drawers, put towels at the bottom on the floor to catch any overflow, and let it sit for 3-4 hours. It's called a manual defrost. She also specifically said not to use a hair dryer at all. The shelves stayed in place and I didn't remove the cover; she said it wasn't necessary. If this works it is a breeze since I have everything in a cooler and frozen stuff I can use today if it gets thawed somewhat. I used the wait time to clean the inside with Seventh Generation hard surface cleaner and microfiber cloths. I will post a reply to this post with the results.

Thanks for sharing. The main purpose of this instructional video is to identify if the cooling coil is not positioned properly from the manufacturer and make the correction so this does not reoccur. If after you manually defrost and it occurs again this might indicate you have a bent cooling coil which is interfering with the fan after is freezes over.

I'm so grateful to you for posting this. Every single new appliance (except my 1948 O Keefe and Merrit stove) has broken in my 7 year old house. I thought our fridge was a goner. I got everyone off with my small kids in tow. I noticed the black goop that is protecting a connection on the right side stuck to the panel so some of the connection wires are slightly exposed. What should I do for that?
@MyPIDream
@MyPIDream 2 жыл бұрын
Exposed connections is a no-no in electrical terms. If you are not familiar with electronics or electrical repairs I recommend you finding a qualified technician to repair or replace the connector. Although the connector you are mentioning is probably low voltage DC it could do further damage to your Refridgerator or present an electrical hazard to you.

Thanks, again! Today was the second time I de-iced the fan area. But I'm concerned that another problem had developed. For several hours before I could get to do the job the noise stopped completely, suggesting that the fan has died. Not sure how to tell if that's the case, or what symptoms to see if it is no longer running. I can open it up again to put what I assume would be 12V on the fan leads, but maybe the controller is shot. Well, we'll see.

Bam. Thanks. That was easy. I used a hairdryer to speed the thaw. Go easy on heat. The back insulation material is sensitive to heat.

Thank you for the video. We felt more confident removing the panel after watching the video. Our fan noise was growing increasingly loud and ran longer and longer. Once we opened the panel, we did find a little bit of ice in the areas you show, but definitely not as much as yours. We did the defrosting technique, and put it all back together, and the fan is still making a whirring sound, not as loud yet and not as long. The line closest to the fan seems to have had some hit marks where the fan might have been hitting. Is it possible the line moved forward and causing the fan noise, or could the fan itself just be the issue? If it continues I can take pics and show you what we see, but wanted to get this question out asap.
@MyPIDream
@MyPIDream 3 жыл бұрын
I suspect your fan housing is warped or the way it mounts on the panel puts stress on the fan housing. This will cause the fan to make noise. If you can troubleshoot it down to the fan, get a replacement from Samsung and install it yourself since you already know how to access the fan. If you're not comfortable, then contact a service technician.

Thank you James. We have the same unit. So far no problem but if I have to go through that exercise I would wrap & seal those incoming refrigerant pipes with foam insulation to keep out moisture so it won't happen again. Sad to have to defrost a self-defrosting fridge in 2019! I think the lower humidity here in Alberta helps!
@MyPIDream
@MyPIDream 5 жыл бұрын
I believe your observation about humidity is the key point and something I failed to discuss in the video. We are in a high humidity climate both here in SC and in the Philippines. High humidity is a key factor in icing of your ref unit.

First off great tutorial. I had same sound issue and did as you described with loud hum that shuts off as you open door and hear the motor fan die down. Unfortunately it did not work! I'm so bummed and proud that I 'fixed' it. But of course it is never easy. What else could be my problem? The fan itself?
@MyPIDream
@MyPIDream 4 жыл бұрын
Another issue could be the fan itself is not mounted properly to the back panel. If the screws are too tight or not equally torqued in the back panel it can warp the fan housing causing the fan to make a noise when activated. To test this you can pull the back panel off as you did as described in this video but don't disconnect the fan wires. Close the door and plug in the fridge. If the noise is still there then try adjusting the mounts of the fan. Then retest. Lastly, it could be the fan itself. A simple test is to remove the fan and hook it to a DC power supply rated for the fan's operating voltage. If the fan still makes the noise replace the fan.

9:18 the “defrosted water drain being clogged with ice” I fixed that with the idea from another KZbinr and an #18 copper wire (I think, it was two years ago), twisted and hanged from the defrosting heat elements inside the drain: so heat was transferred thru the wire down there. The issue was defrosted ice water was actually going inside the fridge toward the doors beneath the filter... that issue stopped and never has returned. But now this noise happened, not sure it’s a fan (fridge or freezer) as it continues after opening a door for a few seconds... I fear it could be the compressor, but then again not always makes the noise. Could be the freezer’s fan (evaporator)... new defrost programmed when food runs out of the fridge a bit

I went through this whole process (very helpful and clear, thank you) and the fan is still making noise. Anyone else have problems w the fan design? It’s clearly not sitting right and/or rubbing against something. Hard to tell but easy to hear. Ugh (PS- inherited the fridge when I bought the house. )Will never buy Samsung -appliances again.
@MyPIDream
@MyPIDream 4 жыл бұрын
If you found ice buildup and you followed the instructions to remove all the ice and you still have a fan blade noise, then you probably have one of 2 things. Something is still rubbing against the fan blade (maybe some of the foam insulation) or the fan itself is faulty which will require a fan replacement. You can test the fan in place by connecting the fan back up but not putting the panel in place. Plug the refrigerator back to the power and if it's still making the noise then the fan might be bad. Also, if the fan is mounted too tight in the panel sometimes it warps the fan housing which will cause the fan to be noisy. Try to loosen up the mounting hardware and test again.

One word of caution.............if the panel which holds the fan does not come off easily DO NOT force it. I had difficulty removing the panel at the top so finally used mirror and flashlight which revealed the fan housing encased in ice. Had I forced it I would have torn the fan off it's base. I used a popsicle stick to prop open the bottom of the panel and stuck a hair dryer up inside to melt the ice. When the ice finally melted off the housing the panel came off easily. As part of this process we also pulled the refrigerator out, removed the panel at the base of the back, and found that the coils were totally encased in a thick layer of dust. Vacuumed and brushed out what I could but finally used a small blower to get the rest out. I made quite a mess of the kitchen, but the refrigerator should be much more efficent now with the coils clean

Thank you so much for the pleasant, thorough, and easy to follow tutorial. Do you get ice build up in the ice maker too? We had a repair guy fix the back panel problem this same time last year. So it looks like we will be doing a yearly defrost. Otherwise happy with the fridge. Curious to see if our copper pipe is bent like yours which would explain how fast the problem returned. .

Yes, we get ice build up and the condition where it stops making ice from the ice maker. I have a fix action (upcoming video) for that but it's a band aide. This is another poor engineering design by Samsung. Other than problems with the ice maker, I'm happy with the fridge too.

I have a Samsung fridge RF28T5001 purchased in Nov 2021. It looks very much like the one described in this video except that the wording "Twin Cooling" on the back panel is replaced by "All-round Cooling". My fridge also has fan noise after one year. I followed the present instruction to open up the back panel with about 1-hour effort, only to find out the fan has been moved to a new location at the lower left corner on the bottom floor and has no ice sounding it. So my fan noise cannot be fixed as by the well described method in this video. Don't spend effort to open up the back panel of the newer model.

Although, I may have to turn to this method at some point, there's a 'quick-fix' method that many people have had luck with and so far, so have I. For my model (RF30) you press Energy Saver+Fridge at the same time for several seconds until you get a blank screen. Then, cycle through some settings by pressing the Fridge button until you see the code: rd. The Fridge then beeps for about 20mins as the built in heater coil heats up and melts off most of the ice (from what I've been told anyway). It took me 3 cycles of doing that and now my fridge isn't making that ridiculous sound from the fan. For some models, you press and hold Lighting+Freezer, so you may have to find your models specific combo. I found mine here: www.manualslib.com/download/1429927/Samsung-Rf30hbedbsr.html search for your model if either of the codes don't take you to the menu you need.

I'm about to undertake this task because you've made it seem easy! Can you clarify: Did you turn off the power at all or no? If so, did you unplug the fridge or turn it off elsewhere? And at what point did you turn the power back on?

I unplugged it from the wall. That's the safest bet. You can turn off the breaker as long as the house is wired correctly and there's no residual voltage riding on the neutral or ground.

Comment and a Question: That was a great run through. Havinmg just replaced the faucets in the Master Bath- working in a tight space on my back grrrrr!! I wasn't happy to hear my Samsung four door French fridge moaning and groaning! One more Covid-19 locked-down (not really- bs) project! Thank you for a great explanation on how to resolve. I can handle this. Here's my question. Why not wrap the copper lines at the top with thin foam pipe insulation to limit the problem/defect from reoccurring again- or at least as often? P. S. - Next up will be replacing the defective designed ice maker- you know, the one Samsung claims is not a design defect?
