In Islam it is recommended for men to sit when urinating and do Istibra after urination. Istibrāʾ is a recommended (mustaḥabb) act performed by men after urinating in order to be confident that no urine is left in the urethra, and its not compulsory to perform. It is performed by the following way: after urinating, the anus is first purified if it has become impure; then, the middle finger of the left hand is slid three times from the anus up to the scrotum; then, the thumb is placed on the penis and the forefinger is placed under the penis, and the thumb and forefinger are pulled three times along the penis up to the point of circumcision; finally, the end of the penis is pressed three times.

Thank you, I'll try this this evening! One suggestion for you and others, from someone who has lived and taught a yogic lifestyle for over thirty years: I recommend inhaling through your nose (not mouth, as you demonstrated at 6:10). It's good advice to use your nasal cilia's filtration system for most occasions, but even especially so for the bathroom environment.

Since my prostate operation a few years ago my bladder has been harder to empty!... i now spend close to five minutes on the toilet to relax all my lower abdomen muscles. Eventually it all comes out and near the end, i always bend over forward with both of my hands forming like "a roll" that squeezes my bladder and most of the time there us nothing left. :) and yes, peeing standing up does not relax the lower abdomen muscles enough, making emptying the bladder rather impossible (and peeing while standing up will keep your toilet and all its surroundings much cleaner and hygienic).

My tip (I found this out myself): after urinating, press inwards with your fingers on the shaft and upper base of your voiding organ. Also change the angle of your two fingers with which you press inwards downwards from the top inside. You will immediately notice that your fingers act like a pump and release blocked urine. This helps me to avoid dripping for ages and getting wet pants. Give it a try.

Can you give a better description of what you are suggesting please. Not sure of location, and direction of pressure, when you said "press inwards with your fingers on the shaft and upper base". When you say "press inwards", do you mean - towards my prostrate? Also not following when you said "change the angle of your two fingers with which you press inwards downwards from the top inside". Do you mean to move your fingers downwards from the initial location described above, in a circular motion ending up with your fingers pointing towards the floor, and then outwards away from your body - like reinforcing the direction the urine is supposed to go?

Owning my house and having to clean the toilets myself I learned many years ago that sitting down to pee reduced the mess to clean up. Also much easier for my 1-2AM pee time. No light needed. Rocking back and forth a couple times would empty the remaining pee. Eating cooked potatoes around 5PM results in 2 to 3 potty trips during the night. If the potatoes are cooked and placed in the fridge to cool for 24 hrs, then heated up and eaten around 5PM mitigates the multiple toilet trips during the night. Usually waking up at night there is no need to pee. If it takes a few minutes to get back to sleep my kidneys wake up and fill the bladder. So 10 minutes later it's time to pee.

Thank you Eric. I have the opposite problem and I have had it for 35 years. I don't pass any urine naturally, I use an intermittent catheter three times a day. It dates back to an awful infection I had when I was forty-something. A junior hospital doc tried to remove the indwelling catheter without deflating the bulb. Owwe! I have never peed naturally since, The kit is wonderful these days and infections are rare. In the wonderful UK NHS my catheters are free, I cope fine, it's just the way I pee, but in my 80th year I am concerned about the future as I get older. Iwish I could pee without the rigmarole. My dilemma is whether to try to reverse the process at this late stage and how to do that if it were even possible. What advice do you have?

I had a massively enlarged prostate. Greenlight laser surgery helped for a while, but my prostate kept enlarging. A lot of it was median lobe enlargement, which is the worst kind for voiding problems. I had prostate artery embolization done, which has helped. Another thing that helps is L-Arginine, which helps relax the bladder. I take that around 9:00 p.m., since my voiding problems are mostly overnight. I find that I need to pee three times at bedtime to fully empty my bladder.

Good video; subscribing. I have a fourth tip, specially useful for 65'ers like me, and specially useful when standing at the urinal: GENTLY massage pelvis between urination bouts. I can't capitalize "GENTLY" enough, though. You can really hurt yourself pushing on your delicate internals. The amount of pressure to use is like the weight of your fingers on a flat surface; no more. Super-soft. Almost like to just tickle yourself. Softly rubbing the area below the belly button up and down or side to side often causes further bouts of urine to pass that you didn't even know were waiting there.

now that I’m having problems in that area because of BPH, I’m going to try these tips, but I’ve always felt that it was easier for me to urinate standing up, than sitting down. If you’re at home, instead of just standing up for four seconds and sitting back down, walking around inside the house for a minute is more effective. I’ve heard that even in healthy people, there’s always about 50 cc of urine left in your bladder after you urinate.

No matter how you shake and dance, the last drop ends up in your pants--from my grade school days, and quite correct much of the time ever since. Great ideas here; I've been a sitter for probably 50 of my 76 years. I once had my prostate grow into my bladder. My excellent urologist went up the tube with a light and laser and cut the overgrowth out, painless, quick, and effective. He said it was like the flapper valve on a toilet and shut before the bladder was empty. It was fixed immediately! Also, a mental exercise that has worked many times is to picture a melting icicle dripping. I had some good actual visuals of large icicles in my head and thinking of those truly helped. It works for females too, at least for one who told me so. A dripping faucet image might help; in fact, turning on the sink faucet slowly and listening calmly to it helps. Watch the delightful Kominsky Method short series on Netflix to see Michael Douglas dealing with this issue. Great video for probably anyone over fifty.

Also I sit in a dark bathroom with quiet and relax for some time. I have to slowly let it pass as I have a damaged urethra from BCG vaccination after grade 2/3 bladder cancer removed by TURBT in 2020.

Thank you, Doc, for your service. I am 75 and I have had dribble after urinating for many years now. It's inconvenient at home but much worse when using public facilities. I hate it when I'm wearing clean clothes and they get soiled with urine when people around me may easily smell it when they pass by or when we're standing in line at the cash register. So, I developed a way to avoid the dribble by taking my time, of course, but then I take a few folds of toilet paper in my hand and bend forward a couple of times (as per your demonstration, but still standing in front of the urinal). The dribble is caught in the toweling and easily discarded. If there's no toilet paper I just let it dribble into my hand...there usually isn't all that much, just a few drops. and I have to wash my hands anyway, right? So, it's not that disgusting. That avoids the dribble that causes a wet spot in my pants or embarrassing odor.

You're welcome! Thank you for your comment and support. I think that's a great tip and also a good habit to get into to ensure no dribble after urinating. Saves you from having to change underwear too! Thanks for sharing

I am a 93-year-old, non-medical person. Each and every one of my peers, (though their numbers are dwindling) have, like me, an enlarged prostate. It is so common here in the UK; almost universal in fact, that I was surprised you have ignored any mention of this. I'm delighted that others report success but sadly, repeated attempts on my part have made no difference at all.

Thank you for these tips. I will certainly try them. But I have found other techniques too. After urinating, walk around the house for a few minutes. Run the kitchen or bathroom faucet, and fill a jug with water and pour it into a cup. The sound of running water always triggers the urge to pee. Brush you teeth and gums (I kid you not).It also stimulates the urge.

I'm in my 60s and urination is a different experience for me now. I've actually been doing hints 1 and 2. Getting up at 4AM to urinate, I started sitting down because: 1) I don't have to aim; 2) I can stay half-asleep; and 3) I could relax more and just let the flow occur. I'll incorporate hint #3 and see how that helps.

I’m curious if the bladder is slightly spongy? I say this because at night I pee before brushing my teeth, then when I finish brushing my teeth, I can pee again a tiny bit. If the bladder is spongy, then the time it takes to brush my teeth gives time for the pee higher up in the bladder to get to the bottom of the bladder through gravity. Maybe that’s what’s happening??

Or maybe the bladder is refilled again? I'm only speculating.

Good advice Eric, after going through Prostate surgery I had to find ways to reduce my leakage after going to the toilet. What I do is after I urinate man style, I pull my little John straight out firmly and hold for about 4-5 seconds and release the pressure, I do this a few times until I see no more urine coming out.

This is a weird one, but seems to work for me (to a point): Our horses stretch out their front legs and back legs in a kind of triangle shape when they pee. One more thing i'd personally endorsed and does every time i pass urine and not in a hurry, is try slowly run your hands to your buttocks before and after you pee. This tingling sensation will help you with totally clearing your bladder. But this may take some time as well, so gotta be patient with it.
@betacam235 Жыл бұрын
I found this myself, but it's more the base of the spine, where the buttocks start to separate. The coccyx area. This seems to send nerve impulses to the bladder muscles and about 5 to 10% more liquid will come out!

Here are my 2 cents, Before starting turn the water on in the sink and let it run so you can hear it (I know the water bill) but if helps and it works so why not. Here is another one no one mentioned, my own personal unique 'invention' (works for me 80%) drop your pants and underwear down to your knees while standing start massaging and stroking up/down and in circles motions very gently close your eyes imagine your butt is a soft baby butt while using both of your fingers tips keep stroking all around your butt cheeks , when you feel your hair is aroused there you are really relaxed till your last flow or drip come to an end. I know it sound a bit too crazy, but next time just try it once. What do you have to lose.

True ..millions of westerners (especially americans ) don"t know that #islam tought us all what this guy is saying through our prophet , even in the restroom we don't use the right hand we have to use the left hand and wash after done and rewash hands plenty with soap...the right hand for eating and shaking hands . PS: When i told my friend from california .. in islam you have to sit even for a pee if the toilet is available he told me we thought that was for gays only 😂

I started to sit years ago to keep the bathroom cleaner, OMG what a difference. I can't say it's made a diff in less travels to the can, but it will not go back to standing. Here is one more helpful hint to add to this. As you go to sit on the toilet, use both hands to gently grasp the outside of the thigh muscles at about the gluteal crease, and use a gentle internal rotation until you are actually planted on the toilet seat. On normal sitting without this, there is a tendency for there to be compression of the inner thigh muscles which creates compression of the internal pelvic musculature. This action removes this compression.
