I had a therapist, and it helped a lot at first, but it didn't take long to get to the point that it was more of a detriment than it was helpful. My second last session sent me into a depression spiral, and the last one just fealt completely unproductive. She even said to me on my last session "maybe psychology isn't for you," which made me feel like a lost cause entirely, and led me back to addiction for a while, when i was completely sober for a few months. Now i just deal with my shit on my own, and try not to let the addictions take hold too much.

This is spot on. I don't think people realize how inadequate a lot of therapy training is. Many schools, programs and training sites only give pretty basic textbook/classroom oriented and incomplete information to trainees who are then thrust into real life settings where we feel completely unprepared. It takes literally years upon years of intensive, focused and dedicated energy to become a truly competent therapist and even then, we sometimes miss the mark and get it wrong. It's a complicated profession.

Love this video, everything you say is so true. Funny enough, I had a male therapist who really didn’t connect with me and had all the problems you listed here. I’m now seeing a therapists who’s a woman and she is actually able to do all the things you talk about. It’s night and day and I’m able to make so much more progress.

I love my thearpist! He's an old friend that knew me at my worst while he was in school. He notices body language, voice tones, etc. And calls me out on my actions. Started using him again 12 yrs later. Same results. Tremendous results!!!

A lot of interesting points that might be useful as a sponsor in an anonymous 12 steps program.

13:39 this really drove a wedge between me and my therapist. He helped me get through a panic disorder and I started seeing him for depression a year later. For panic attacks there are a lot of practical things you can do, when it came to depression he gave me a lot of reflection statements and "how do you feel about that" that made me feel like he was just saying "damn, that sucks. too bad".

Totally agree with D.F. E = you got to identify triggers and how to deal with them/sort them out vs. teaching someone coping skills! AVOID A FREUDIAN AT ALL COSTS! I'd also avoid a Cognitive Behaviorist too!

Brilliant. This is super timely, Connor. I’ve been feeling this way with my current therapist, and am falling into a bit of the sunk cost fallacy with her.

Just like you said. It's an industry. There are more pharmaceutical drugs and therapist.S than there ever were

Do you have any recommendations for therapists that are good with males in Los Angeles ?

Also, alot of therapists are extremely bad at witnessing and validating what someone else is feeling.

1: Find a therapist with empathy= abillity to listen, and to picture themselvs in others place Finding a therapist with empathy and witch the correct academic skills ( like cognitiv behaveoral therapy), is critical!. The therapy is about your health. Not about pleaseing the therapist ( who can be toxic or incompetent). Search to you find a therapist with both empathy and skills and you will see ressults. Also remember that it’s you who do the « emotional work», it’s discomfortable and will take time ( a year at least)
