When I make flashcards I write a sentence on the flashcard. Not just the word. Then you're practicing the word in context and it's much easier to recall later.

I think it's a great idea for sure (especially for phrases) but I still think there's value in learning words one at a time. But it probably totally depends on the person. I like this better personally as a separate exercise, but a really good and valuable one. Thanks for contributing.

does anyone find that they can read an article in Spanish (not advanced in my case but I can read basic Spanish) but when it comes so retrieving the very same words that I automatically know in a written article, it's much harder. I wonder if this is because much of my Spanish exposure is in a written form.
@espr75647 жыл бұрын
kittysparkleeyes. I know that problemm too.
@elspanishdude7 жыл бұрын
I think you're right about the cause in part. It's also because you haven't taken the time to learn the words well enough with the flashcard strategy (or another memorization method). It's much easier to recognize a word when it's written then it is to recall the word out of nowhere. It's a similar reason to why I tell you to go from Spanish to English first when doing The Flashcard Strategy (it's easier that way) then switch to the other direction, English to Spanish--the harder direction. Again, because you have to recall the Spanish word out of nowhere!!! When you see a word written that you want to be able to recall, you need to memorize the heck out of it. I hope I'm not sounding preachy. That's not my tone. You are totally awesome for reading stuff in Spanish. You are even awesomer for being frustrated with not being able to recall those same words later. Memorize the words really well, and you'll be able to recall them much better. Not all the time, it's also a skill to think fast and on your feet (that you can practice and get better at) but it starts with memorizing them better. Much love. Keep at it. I'm always here.

The Spanish Dude you are probably right. my Spanish reading ability comes from having had Peruvian friends (mostly related to an ex who spoke fluent English) who are now all friends of mine. we chat on fb messenger very frequently and it started with me just using translator and copying and pasting back my replies. over time, I have learnt to read 90% of what my friends say to me. without the translator but I use the translator to reply!! I've only just started trying to learn Spanish seriously. I think I could reply without the translator in some cases!! but I'm tending to use it as a prop as I fear making mistakes!! I think I'll try to make a concerted effort to learn 50 words (confidently ) each week. (as in I can recall them without any hints. )
@isukwithnames18117 жыл бұрын
The struggle is real I'm having the same issues. I think my prob is mostly I can easily recognize the words by sight(and sentence order), but when the words are spoken accents can make them harder to understand.

Great Video...thanks. The most encouraging aspect is to hear that learning Spanish is a PROCESS. I'm taking a class near my home and my friends say, "Hey, how's the class...have you finished learning Spanish yet?" Yikes! Finished?!?! Heck no...in fact, the more I learn, the more I realize that I don't know. Anyway, ...it's a PROCESS.

I have a video idea for you. You should make a video of your insights, opinions, or effectiveness of popular language learning programs. Such as how effective a specific language learning program is, or the pro and cons of it. So I think it would be cool if you made a video of your thoughts or opinions of the most popular language programs that are out there. Some popular ones like you said are Duolingo and Rosetta Stone. What do you think? I think everybody would love this!

You left out the step of speaking to a native speaking child. Their vocabulary is typically smaller, as well as their world. I found this very helpful for practicing conversational French. Additionally, most little kids aren't in a hurry to get on to the next thing but tend to stay engaged so long as this 'interesting foreigner' is talking to them... even if they are playing with a toy. Of course, make sure that the parents know what you are doing... nobody likes a random stranger coming up and paying attention to their child.
